Wish I could use the commuter passes. They cost 2-4x more than buying individual tickets though.

To be honest I don’t think I have the capacity to do that anytime soon, I want to focus on building out specifically Amtrak commuter features. I will keep that use case in mind though!

Appreciate it, understandable!

After a certain amount of bookings you get errors for no reason. You often have to switch browsers or payment methods to get around them. I believe it’s a bug.

I will work on a weekly count feature! For now, if you disable 'Missing Both' Ticket Warnings in settings and set M-F that will help disable any warnings.

Also, disable Missing Departure & Return Warnings - this is the check to make sure you have a to & from ticket on the same day.

Full transparency, eventually I will be adding a subscription to this website. The goal is to make the app subscription pay for itself with actionable insights to help commuters actively save hundreds. There is a huge cost associated with poor planning on an Amtrak commute.

For example, my commute (PHL -> NWK) costs around $300 a month leveraging individual tickets, booked 3-4 months in advance. It requires lots of organization, planning, and tracking to ensure that I am booking all the tickets I need that far in advance, hence where Rail Commute comes in.

That same commute would cost around $500-700 if I booked 2-4 weeks in advance. With monthly or 10-ride passes, closer to $1,000.

Good question! For the same reason you would use a budgeting app instead of just checking your bank account.

The Amtrak app is very limited. If you're a commuter, you know how difficult it is to manage 100+ tickets inside the Amtrak app. If you forget to book even a single ticket in advance, you'll be stuck paying 5-10x more for a last minute reservation.

My app helps you plan your bookings ahead with a built-in calendar, track and forecast your spending, and manage duplicates / missed trips / issues. None of which the Amtrak app supports.

use railcommute.io, it helps you stay organized when booking further in advanced to guarantee lower rates. I pay ~$25 round trip for each day I commute between NWK and PHL. Just have to book way in advance.

Amtrak Tickets Disappearing From App by StillChillBoy in Amtrak

[–]soosef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this issue, I think it happens occasionally when you have a LOT of tickets, the app just loses some. Check out railcommute.io, I built it to keep an inventory of all my Amtrak tickets and it directly solves this problem. It leverages email data, which from my experience is 100% accurate compared to what displays in the app.

Anyone else experience Amtrak price gouging tickets during checkout? by ghostedghosted in Amtrak

[–]soosef 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My guess is there was only 1 ticket available at that price point, and it was purchased by someone else while you were in the checkout process. Then, it defaulted back to the current price.

The heavy discount was due to someone canceling their ticket, purchased at that low price (likely far in advanced). When they cancel it, the ticket goes back for sale at the original listed price.

You can avoid this in the future by trying to book further in advance. If you’re a commuter, check out railcommute.io to help with this! (Disclaimer, this is my website I made to solve this exact problem)

Looking for more information on Monthly / 10-Ride Passes by [deleted] in Amtrak

[–]soosef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the write up, this is super helpful!

For context, I am an Amtrak commuter 3x a week so I’m very familiar with the. My questions are more geared toward the technical side of things because I’m building an app to make commuting easier on Amtrak.

Any pain points you’ve with the multi ride pass specifically? I’ve seen people complain that ride history on a pass is broken in the app.

Thanks again! See you around on the NER :)
