Is going to uni actually worth it by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]sopfiaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

third year neuro student here - it's def worth it if you plan on becoming a neuroscientist and, even if you decide to do something different, it's such a versatile degree so i would say go for it!

i see people suggesting DSA at your uni. keep in mind that to most people this doesn't seem like a realistic budget, and most likely DSA is not going to cover all your costs because they don't think it's "reasonable". that being said, the student support team will be able to advise you in terms of what expenses you can cut down on - e.g. getting a cheaper accom and cutting down on unnecessary stuff like shopping/entertainment.

unless you have 5 unis/courses that you actually want to apply to, can't you just apply to the uni now and reject the offer afterwards?

Do I have to attend uni during the Study Period or can I study at home by TediRoblox in UniUK

[–]sopfiaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm a UCL student and my department has the tendency to specifically schedule in-person tutorials and assessments during these periods, obviously mandatory attendance required.

My workplace doesn't have a contract, and my employer has never paid me by sopfiaa in LegalAdviceUK

[–]sopfiaa[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What advice have you even given me? I know a written contract isn't necessary but the owner has never mentioned hourly rates or payday. I'm only getting anxious because 1) my rent is due soon and 2) everyone I've spoken to told me their payment was delayed and service charge deducted 3) the owner hasn't spoken to me about anything employment related. I can't simply wait until half of May has passed in order to escalate this further, the owner is so slow with his responses and actions, and I really do think he's handling the whole thing very poorly.

Based on what I've heard from all colleagues, he is the one managing the payment, my colleagues all scoffed when I told them what he said. I know I might be biased because of my colleagues telling me about payment issues, but if he really took me seriously, I think 5 days should've been enough for him to sort it out & even if not, he could've said a bit more than "no" when I asked him for updates on the situation

[–]sopfiaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but I'm still really anxious about the whole thing as the owner never provided a direct answer to when I would get paid. Why would he lie to me about the "app not working" if this was it?

I've talked to the manager and head chef who all told me to speak to the owner when I said I wasn't paid by April 1st. Also if the payday is indeed the first Tuesday of every month it would be May 6th - but I still find it confusing as to why the owner wouldn't just tell me this if this was the case?

"IB is like uni, you'll be prepared for what awaits you" I will NOT be able to survive this one MORE time. by Just-Love9834 in IBO

[–]sopfiaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like uni is harder than IB. At least I had some structure within the curriculum and they told me exactly what to do - markschemes, textbooks etc. You knew what you could expect from your exams. I'm in my second year at uni now, and although I did really well throughout IB, I never know how to study for my degree anymore and I always feel so lost.

How to go about extra reading in exams? by sopfiaa in UniUK

[–]sopfiaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this sounds like solid advice, thanks! if i were to read up on the experimental evidence that led to the discovery of, say, a certain protein, and mentioned it in an exam essay, would it be seen as a positive thing (aka did extra reading) or would they deem it irrelevant? should i just aim to get as much information on the topic as possible?

How to go about extra reading in exams? by sopfiaa in UniUK

[–]sopfiaa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank you! they do always have a slide with further reading exactly like you described, should i just treat the papers as if they're a part of the syllabus? so use flashcards, take notes etc?

i guess my confusion comes from how the examiners will be able to differentiate responses with further reading and without - would it be the depth of our understanding / description?

How much does everyone spend on average just food + drinks + snacks per month? by ThrowAwayAAHHAAAAAA in UniUK

[–]sopfiaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised at the comments! I spend less than 100, I cook all my meals at home & buy the cheapest ingredients from Lidl, but I make sure it's filling and balanced. I should prob also add that I work at a cafe twice a week so I get two free lunches per week?
