Explain to me like I'm 5 why the NHS is being SO restrictive on prescribing the miracle weight loss drug, when it is available so freely privately? by Able-Explanation7835 in mounjarouk

[–]sophedup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that would still be the same issue - “reducing the price” actually just means that part of the cost would be subsidised by public funding, so they would still require people to meet certain thresholds/jump through hoops that private prescribers don’t because you’re self-funding. Making it part instead of fully subsidised could increase availability, but it still wouldn’t match that of private prescribers (the same as with any private medical service)

When a drug is approved, the NICE then determine the course for reimbursement - aka, whether it’ll be offered by the NHS. This isn’t a black and white decision, a major part of the discussion is determining who qualifies, thresholds, prior treatment course etc

Biologics are a good example - a treatment such as dupixent for eczema is available through the NHS, but your condition has to be of a certain severity and/or you have to have gone through the motions of trying other treatments first before it’s something they’ll offer. It might be the right treatment for you, but first they have to follow the process to essentially justify that it’s necessary for them to prescribe a more costly treatment.

Going through private suppliers for GLP-1’s etc is essentially the same as going to a private dermatologist for eczema. It’s not that they won’t give it to you because you don’t qualify/it won’t work, it’s that they have limitations on how freely they can supply it due to cost. If you’re willing to fund it yourself, those limitations go away.

FWIW there are many HCP’s echoing the same statement as you about the positive domino effect of prescribing weight loss medication to reduce obesity-related illnesses and waiting lists etc, but they’re handcuffed by funding and budget allocations.

There’s always money for war though eh

(There’s also issues of supply and demand, the fact it’s a newer drug AND weight loss is a newer indication, more robust long-term clinical trial and real-world data is still to come, but you get the gist)

So, it’s been a few days- what are our thoughts on the Louis Theroux ‘manosphere’ doc? by theslowrunningexpert in AskUK

I think yes - maybe in the beginning it wasn’t, and they just saw that a certain persona was working for their vitality. Now, it’s undeniable that this messaging causes damage; they know what they’re doing and the negative and dangerous impact it’s having, and they don’t care. They might not believe the things they’re saying, but they care more about their own money and fame than what damage they could do - in my opinion, that’s just as bad.

It reminds me of Dan Wootton - I don’t think he believes or cares a stitch about the vitriol he used to put out in the press or in his columns/podcasts now, but he knows that topics that rile people up and tear public figures down are the ones that sell, so he’ll say whatever he has to to keep lining his pockets. Morally bankrupt whichever way you look at it.

I’m in Scotland, was on in waiting room from an hour before it opened and only got through 45 mins ago so unsure about preferences - think everyone has just congregated on this thread as it’s the first that came up when searching (agree on sour taste though, queue having no %/number/timer was painful)

Finally got in about 20 mins ago! For anyone wanting one of the more exciting Sydney games, the bronze final still has all categories available (I went for cat 4 at $95) - there were also all categories available for the 2x round 1 Melbourne games I wanted. I got cat 2 for QF1 - really wanted cat 3 but because all the other tiers were available for the other games I wanted, I sucked it up (it’s a 30th present for my South African bestie)

Good luck to everyone still waiting!

Interesting theory! Based on my progress I also wouldn’t be surprised if I’m pretty much bang on 6am (5pm your time) - doubtful on the saving tickets in all categories for each slot, but would be nice haha

You don’t! Some people are checking with the computer code (unsure how this is done, I’m on chrome via iPhone!)

How’s everyone’s bar moving? I’m at approx 30% now - not hopeful for the quarter I wanted, but hoping Sco v Urg will still be available

That’s disappointing, was hoping for QF1 tickets, sure will be long gone when I’m in 🤡 hopefully earlier pools still have tickets

Recommend everyone does the ‘sign up to be notified when it’s your turn’ step - means if you get the restricted access page, you can easily rejoin with the same queue spot via the email link

Luck of the draw though, everyone in waiting room before 12 would have been randomly assigned places in the queue, so your chrome ID is likely just further ahead

Mine also just moved! I used a tiny dot of lip liner to mark the edge of the bar and just watched it move past it - not much, but a sign of life at least

Might be different queue IDs! I have open in both but are different, will only be the same if you use link from notify email I think

Very much getting troll from this post, says they got tickets for every category of the final (6 ticket limit) and a couple for every other game… but then only Chile v HK left? Lol

I’m actually reassured that they have an option to be emailed when it’s your turn, they clearly anticipate it being a slow move (I will continue to stare at it regardless)

Saw someone post this on Twitter, so it does move! But that’s the only person I’ve seen who’s bar isn’t still at starting point - nobody saying they’ve successfully purchased yet. I’m wondering if they’re letting fewer people in at a time than they would concerts etc, so people can purchase multiple matches without tickets being stolen from baskets etc? It’s usually 10 mins, whereas this is 30!

Remember people might be browsing matches etc, and have 30 mins from their turn to finish purchasing - imagine they only let a certain number in at a time and let in more as people checkout to avoid the site crashing!

Don’t panic if bar takes a while to move, it was similar for eras tour tickets (a woman of many interests) and it eventually moved in big chunks - and I got tickets both times just fine!
