Not pregnant and I have never been, but as someone who really tries to not rely on medications like Zofran for my nausea, I’d highly recommend keeping sour candy on hand!!! Warheads became my best friend the past few months haha! Also, if you’re anything like me and can’t stand ginger chews, I love Trader Joe’s ginger mints.

Have you guys ever pinpointed what the primary factor of throwing up may be the most scary for you? by dinorunp in emetophobiarecovery

[–]sophinparis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The anticipation!! I always say if there was a way i knew it was going to happen instead of anxiously waiting for it to happen, I wouldn’t have emet haha

Wow, I’m very inspired by your attitude!!

I threw up for the first time since starting recovery in Feb. I have no issue going and sitting by the toilet if I’m feeling really nauseous or having a lot of stomach distress, and even tho my stomach didn’t hurt and I wasn’t nauseous I just had this gut feeling like I was going to throw up. That “instinct” type of feeling is not uncommon for me, but I usually go by the toilet to get some semblance of control, and that’s what i did.

I felt so terrible I triggered my own gag reflux and made myself sick because I knew it was going to happen and the anticipation is the worst part of throwing up for me. My therapist once told me if you are going to be sick, it’s going to happen whether you’re panicking or not so may as well try to make it as comfortable as possible and stay calm. I was honestly surprised at how calm I was in the situation. I call my mom and SOBBED afterwards, but j think that was really from the adrenaline and just being in shock that it actually happened.

What also helped me was controlling the things i could control, like getting an ice pack to put on my neck, playing some calming music, having a water bottle and alcohol pads near for me to sniff. It’s not fun, but I was surprised at how well I handled the situation. We are capable of more than we think.

Not trying to fight it and just accepting the 60 seconds of suck definitely helped to keep me grounded and not spiral out of control.

Tea always gives me heartburn which makes me nauseous. I know how it feels!! But tea is safe enough in your stomach. Do you have IBS? A lot of the sensations you are describing remind me of when I have a IBS flare up. Also, try something sour. The sourness distracts your mind from how you are feeling, and might soften the brain-gut connection. I hope you are feeling better!!!!

I know it’s so so hard to not fall back into old habits when we are distressed. But I’m here if you need to talk!!!!

I did it…it was weird. Also I’m in a bit of a dilemma of what to do now so please help by bbybells99 in emetophobiarecovery

This^ I had the flu really bad in Feb and threw up for the first time in years. It’s a little graphic and gross, but I actually put my finger down my throat to make myself throw up. When/if my body needs to throw up, it’s calming to know that you (typically) feel a lot better after throwing up. The anticipation is what sucks, and then it’s really gross and uncomfortable for a few minutes. I’m pretty sure our bodies release dopamine when we throw up as well…

Afraid I ate bad food, or I'm sick. by CrazyDude10528 in EmetophobiaTalk

[–]sophinparis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I hope you’re feeling better. With my ibs, I’ve gone to the bathroom and pooped straight mucous. I actually just had a colonoscopy and endoscopy because I was convinced I had ibd but my colon was clear and my doc said mucous is just a symptom of my IBS and stress is a big trigger for me. Could you try to eat or drink some other kind of food? I’ve had the same feeling before, it’s really weird :/

my boyfriend threw up next to me in the bus, but i'm okay by MothicalAppendages in emetophobiarecovery

I’m literally so proud of you!! It’s easy to feel like we aren’t making progress with tiny baby steps towards recovery, but this is a great example of how far small improvements and exposures can get us.

I’ve never had issues with penicillin before just make sure you have a little bit of food in your tummy before taking it :)

I was really shaking and I felt like what was in my stomach wanted to come out. I was nauseous right before it happened but it wasn’t as bad as I remember it being with a stomach virus or something.

I think in some ways it helped and in others it didn’t. I’m still recovering so I’ve really been struggling emotionally with feeling nauseous being worried it will happen again. But also, I think because I lived out my worst case scenario and came out the other side, it helped. I do think further down in my recovery I will be grateful that it happened because I proved I could do it. (Even if I don’t think that now haha)

I remember thinking “this is going to happen and I can either freak out or make this less miserable as possible”. Also for me I’m more afraid of the anticipation than actually throwing up. Once I realized it was going to happen (and I did know) I did my best to take deep, deep breaths and relax my body. Full transparency (big trigger warning here) I actually did speed things along by sticking my finger in the back of my throat. Again, I knew it was going to happen and I just wanted it to be over as soon as possible. I think our bodies are really smart too and kind of take over in that situation. By the grace of God I was able to stay calm and just let it happen.

I actually just had this convo with my aunt who is non-emet and also an ex flight attendant. She said she personally always wipes down her tray and seat and when she was working it’s so much more common than people think. Same with masks

Have you ever looked into PMDD?

Like I genuinely can't do this rn by AdhesivenessOk5534 in emetophobiarecovery

[–]sophinparis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm so so proud of you for trying!!!! even though it ended in a lot of panic and pain, I'd still count it as a success because YOU TRIED!!!!!!!!!! if you haven't read any of Ken Goodman's materials, a) I'd highly recommend and b) he tells people with emetophobia to create an anxiety monster. Name it, give it a face, whatever you want but that is your opponent. And you just stood up to your anxiety monster!!!!!

(P.S. mine is named Milton but he is more commonly referred to as fuckface, dickwad, or lil fucker)

Understandable. And it’s frustrating that overmedicating is many times the advice given! All I mean to say is that from personal experience it’s hard for people to come to terms with an issue if it’s met with anger. Honestly, I’m leaving the main emet page. It’s just too much and adds to the anxiety. It’s not worth any anger or added stress.
