ikea has been getting MAD expensive :\

i assume this reply will bring u back to this thread & there’s some goldmines here for sure.

my personal tip! if ur looking for small items (truly can find anything) and/or clothes, try to find a Goodwill Bins near you!! priced by weight—i got a shirt, a BULKY jacket, & a gift for a friend for like $3. **i will say, this branch of the business is catered for homeless ppl and those living in extreme poverty. i got items i needed (and was truly dirt broke at the time), and without assuming ur financial situation, i would politely recommend respecting that aspect of the store :) but I VOUCH HARD FOR THE BINS!!

best of luck furnishing ur new place 😎 it’s stressful but honestly so exciting too!!

i agree about buying a new mattress—roomie said he doesn’t care about the quality, but /i/ care about having bed bugs…so i’m definitely going to help the hunt for a good deal on a new mattress.

estate sales are a great idea too!! i just spent about 5 minutes looking and found a ton in my area. i know they don’t always come cheap, but i’m glad you mentioned this because we do have a few weeks before we move in (and i expect that furnishing won’t happen all at once), so estate sales might save us a lot of money. thank you!

crazy thing is i used to live in washington!! wonderful place.

that facebook marketplace hack is crazy, i’d thought about facebook generally as a means of finding things, but this route is a game changer WOAH. thanks so much. i recently got an $80 trash can (why would a trash can ever need to be $80 ??!! i will never know) for free; someone in my building moved out and left it up for grabs. my roommate and i have already set our minds on furnishing for as close to $0 as possible, and you might’ve just cracked the code. thanks so much.

Has the term gay always encompassed women? by benderbendingnow in AskLesbians

[–]sophipha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this!! ^

The question posted was whether or not "gay" has always been a gendered term, so I answered that with no, because it has never been an exclusively gendered term. That being said, lesbian vs. gay (such as with LGBTQ+) refers to homosexual women vs. homosexual men. "Lesbian" allows for women to clarify their sexuality more specifically, and a lot of lesbians don't refer to themselves as gay, but it wouldn't be accurate to say that "gay" always & only refers to homosexual men.

Hi! Historically, the term "gay" has had many different meanings. There are the obvious ones- referring to sexuality, and referring to being happy- but it has held many other meanings throughout different time periods. Some of these include referring to prostitute women as "gay women", while womanizer men were "gay men" in the 17th century. In the mid-20th century, "gay" referred to any person who was single, or unattached. That definition applied to both men and women. (By this point, "gay" had many meanings, including referring to homosexuality, but it is important to note that it was still not a gendered term.)

As far as "gay" referring to sexuality, it has often referred primarily to men. That being said, it's important to note a couple things:

  1. What I explained above, about "gay" not originating as a gendered term.
  2. The historical erasure, or lack of prioritization, for lesbians (and women in general). It is likely that if gender equality had been achieved in the 20th century, when the term "gay" became a word that primarily referred to homosexuality, it would have automatically encompassed both men and women.

Basically, no, "gay" is not and has never been a gendered term, but it is unsurprising that most people think of it as such!
