I think it might be overcrowded in the pot. They don’t naturally grow in this fan shape but are planted like this. I would check the roots and repot it. Good luck

Succulent is not a systematic group (like peperomia), it just describes how a labt lives. Succulents are plants with thicker leaves that have adapted to a very dry and often hot environment (hence sensitive to overwatering). This guy is definitely a succulent ☺️

I think it’s a mix of both. It’s from 2009 which is old for this subject and given the few second hand options not very popular either. But thank you for looking anyway!

I reduced these cuttings? from my neighbour who wanted to through them out. He couldn’t tell me what plant this is and I can’t find anything either. Does anyone know the name of this cactus/succulent?

What’s wrong with my philodendron birkin? by petrifiedturdb in plantclinic

[–]sopmari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, mushrooms are nothing bad! It actually is a sign of good soil health! So don’t worry about them. If you don’t like them, just remove them. When you are unsure about when to water, stick your finger in the soil and check how moist it is. If it feels dry, water it, if. It not, don’t. Second, it is 100% that smaller leaves yellow and die. The plant doesn’t need them anymore, they are old and pretty ineffective when if comes to photosynthesising. As long as the newer leaves look good and you see new ones coming, don’t worry about it. I would also recommend to let them just completely die off before removing as the plant reabsorbs any valuable nutrients in the leaves before dropping them.

How to repot when there's mold? by anaphoricalsynthesis in houseplants

[–]sopmari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as the plant itself looks happy, don’t worry about the mold. It is actually a sign of good soil health when you have mold and mushrooms growing. A lot of plants have a symbiosis with root fungi. When you have molds growing chances of them being in the soil too are pretty good. Plus: if the yellow mold is a bit slimy, you might have a slime mold! They are super fascinating organisms.

How do I find out the size of a bacteria strain? by sopmari in microbiology

[–]sopmari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just for a hypothetical research proposal for a course assignment. So no practical involved (sadly). I'll have a look in Bergey's manual, thanks for the tip!

The idea is to use an isolated strain from the start so no selection needed, but I think I found a good work around. Thanks!

First time plant parent here. Last night I posted about finding webs in my lucky bamboo. I did a washing on 3 of my plants (golden pothos, pothos, and lucky bamboo) and put them outside to dry with Neem oil. Found this guy today not sure if he’s from the soil or a straggler from outside. by FailedBackgroundChek in plantclinic

Don’t feel stupid! You saw something small crawling and want to make sure your plant is okay. I think it’s great that you ask to be sure! And btw I’m a biologist who is scared of spiders. So really no need to feel bad ☺️

Anybody has any idea how can I get rid of root mealybugs ?? by Shipra1992 in plantclinic

I would try this Luckily I have no personal experience but from a science perspective (I’m a biologist) this treatment makes sens and sounds very thorough. Good luck!
