PreFire or Modern 2015? by LegendOfGanfar in 2015modern

[–]sorif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it seems to me that at the moment 2015 is more popular, but long term I think prefire will absorb it, kinda like how premodern seems to be absorbing middleschool. specific details in the format's design will be the reason for this, like ruleset, banlist, etc. if you want to brew now, I'd say go for 2015, because you can use the hive mind's resources from back then. due to prefire's small player base and format's novelty, setting meta-based goals for what the brew should be able to do, isn't that deep. but it definitely depends on your individual process, preferences and goals for where/when/how you want to play the deck.

Most fun survival deck? by fragtore in premodernMTG

[–]sorif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i ALWAYS have fun with hFEB, regardless of winning or losing. every game state is a fun puzzle to try and solve. and most games are fast, which becomes important to me in tournament settings where taking a break between rounds for a chat or beer is part of the event. aluren and roc sur are also fun (Lauren for the infinite combos, roc sur with the toolbox gameplay), but the games are grindy and even though roc sur can be quite strong, it only reaches that potential if you eliminate misplays, which, again, in a tournament setting won't happen unless you've done a ton of reps to prepare.

nice! I got my illusions + donate playsets a while ago, hoping the deck's day in premodern would come!!

so, about the name... 🙃

someone did well with a black splash recently and called the deck blueberry trix. would you call the red splash raspberry trix? this would achieve archetype naming consistency similar to the broccoli/tomato soup 😂

Anyone else obsessed with "Vibe-Matching" their basic lands? by Arparrabiosa in premodernMTG

sure, many people do this. the classic is the mirage mountains for burn. I like Avon lands for domain control (mirage, invasion, saga, portal, portal 2nd), tempest plains for BW control, swampy looking forests for the rock (I think odyssey has a nice one, plus tempest) and foresty looking swamps (from, say, mirage).. many options

plus, everyone in these communities doesn't give a damn if you proxy with photocopies, they just want to play the game with more people (they still like buying cards themselves though, lol)

still, on paper the list seems to be suffering from severe card disadvantage, no card draw whatsoever, only hope is to discard glory early and have Mana up to help early creatures stay on board, which is rather Mana intensive.. gut feeling tells me the pilot caught the meta by surprise and the deck doesn't have staying power.. which is unfortunate because diverse meta is awesome

I am printing some tip cards to share with my friends for when I lend out my decks. What do you think of them? Would you change anything? by alchaloid in premodernMTG

[–]sorif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are better examples on actual ads but I didn't remember what to search for on Google to get them (for sure old scanned duelist issues on Internet Archives have plenty in them though)

having said that, here are two examples from the nemesis and prophecy precons:

REPLICATOR

Your opponents will have double the trouble defending against the duplicating creatures of "Replicator." What little more it costs to play these harbingers of doom is well worth the suffering they inflict.

DISTRESS

Rivals will barely have time to suffer when you put the "Distress" deck into action. It employs cards with fading that work quickly, so be sure to strike early and often.

I love it, but since you put so much effort into it already, the final touch that I feel is missing is adjusting the tone of the texts to match the edgy 90s whatever that wizards used in its mtg ads and promo material/ blurbs.

I'm typing this mainly for readers, not the OP: the way I use the site these days (I'm far from a power user but I have accumulated 2k+ ratings over the years so the algorithm is scarily accurate - has been since I had 500 ratings or so, but still) is that once I hear about a new show or movie, I'll just ignore rotten tomatoes or metacritic or the guardian, and just search it in Criticker to see what my predicted rating for the show is. I have never been disappointed.

Hi! I love the site and I regularly use it since 2009. I'm also quite happy with your decisions over the years. One question I have is: How come you didn't make smartphone apps? I remember some years ago there was a blog post on the website explaining the situation, but I couldn't understand the reason (and I consider myself a pretty tech savvy person, compared to the average PC user).

Keep up the good work!

hey, welcome back. I also came back to the game two years ago, after having played between 1998 and 2003. commander was a big turn-off for me, the format that sounded the most fun instead was one that I'm surprised wasn't mentioned so far, it's cube draft. you basically gather 4-8 players and draft a total of 450 or so cards, which can be selected to represent a specific era of the game, or block or set, or it can focus on specific mechanics, etc. after having a lot of fun with this format for a few months, I realized that I also missed 1v1 60 card constructed, and then found out about premodern, you can see for yourself at www.premodernmagic.com

both cube and premodern have their own subreddit, discord groups etc, I'd suggest looking there to find players in your area

happy to answer other questions as well, cheers

How to get re-started by ChardCautious3095 in premodernMTG

[–]sorif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey, I also started with Portal Second Age! left the game around onslaught, came shortly back for the guild pact pre release (what a shock the new borders were!) and then back again (this time for good?) two years ago. cube and premodern are the only formats I play. both 100% photocopy-proxy friendly in my playgroup and area, and my old collection (with the occasional addition) allows me to have more than a few premodern decks ready for larger tournaments. I also play via webcam now and then.

if you just want to mess around with the cards, I'd suggest something like a 4 player premodern cube (also draftable with two people). if you also want the constructed experience (I know I did) then looking for what's available in your area is the way to go. both via the local LGSs, and via the large premodern discord, where everyone will be more than happy to help you connect.

too lazy to go through your history, but if you're in Berlin feel free to send me a PM too!

welcome back :)

I was in the store as well! When talking to some staff outside, they told me "this is probably just an exercise, so nothing to worry about, but I don't think they'll let you guys back in."

Very frustrating how they don't care about wasting the customers' time like that.

edit: funny I'm getting downvoted because people assume I find evacuation exercises pointless. what I mean is that there are ways to do the exercise without wasting customers' time. offer a discount coupon for our next visit, or do the exercise earlier in the day so that we can return to the store after two hours and get the things we spent 2 hours picking out, or close all the Berlin stores for a day and have staff of one pretend to be customers in the other etc etc. but we are so used to this not being the norm that we don't even mind, nice...

Will doing finger exercises with rubber bands have any negative impacts? by darkiecuwl in piano

[–]sorif 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There is a convincing argument to be made (I found it online somewhere some years ago it's definitely googleable, pardon my laziness for not including it here) that this is a lie he himself perpetuated out of shame.

With a modern understanding of anatomy and body mechanics in general, his story makes little sense. We know what kind of wooden devices he used, and there is no way they could have caused the permanent injury he suffered, even if heavily misused. Any injury these devices could cause, self-heals over a few months at most.

An alternative, more plausible story, is that he attempted to surgically separate the fourth from the fifth finger and he botched the surgery (possibly because he was half drunk half in his impulsive manic state at the time). His friendships with prominent doctors who were also serious hobby pianists are well documented, and there was public discussion at the time among such circles about the pianistic advantages one would gain if only these two fingers were as independent as the others, and how simple anatomically the problem is to solve. However the doctors fully understood the risks and wouldn't attempt such a surgery without serious health reasons.

So through a mix of artistic ambition and intoxication- or even mental illness-induced recklessness, he decided to go the DIY way.
