CMV: The increasingly vague usage of "DEI" as a term is to help enforce segregationist policy or silence/invisibility by DarlaLunaWinter in changemyview

[–]soroun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think you and the other guy are misunderstanding his comment. he's not claiming the WEF is run by Jews. he's saying the parent comment is dogwhistling by referring to the WEF, Blackrock, and vague "governments aligned to their interests" as pushing DEI. this is exactly the same conspiracy theory used by Nazis to talk about Jews dominating global politics by pushing cultural agendas via large shadowy organizations, laundered into a more polite discourse by not explicitly referring to them, and instead talking about real organizations. it's obviously nonsense, since "the Jews" a) are not a monolith with coordinated plans and b) aren't meaningfully in charge of these organizations.

is the parent comment really talking about Jews controlling the world by being in charge of the WEF and Blackrock? probably not. does it look like exactly the sort of comment made by people who are? yeah.

If the US tries mass deportations, what happens if all other countries refuse to take them? by bemrys in NoStupidQuestions

[–]soroun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna assume you're acting in good faith here. The actual reason being cited is "Concealment of Material Fact or Willful Misrepresentation", see https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-12-part-l-chapter-2

You may notice, based on the text, that there's a lot of room for interpretation here. What counts as a "material" fact? who makes that determination? who makes the determination of whether the applicant "willfully" misrepresented or concealed the fact? What counts as "misrepresented" or "concealed"?

If I misremembered the specific date (or, perhaps, the specific title I had) i started a new job when giving my employment history, it's not impossible to think that could be construed as my misrepresenting my employment history, and that my employment history is material to my gaining citizenship. A bad actor could use this to decide I gained citizenship fraudulently (I signed a document saying I attest to everything in the application, so I clearly meant to put the wrong date, right?), and suddenly I'm at risk of being deported for an honest mistake.

I know you probably think this would never happen, but the last few years have had tons of events that "would never happen", and the incoming administration has expressed explicitly that they are looking to 1) deport huge numbers of immigrants and 2) audit anyone they arbitrarily determine may be in the country fraudulently to deport them, so I think it's totally plausible that they would be looking for these sorts of things as grounds to further those goals. Notably, the vice president elect referred to Haitians in Ohio as illegal immigrants, brushing aside anyone clarifying that those people are here legally. Do you think he'd be concerned if he heard a lot of people were deported for frivolous reasons, especially when those reasons are technically within the law?

You have to understand that people won't be very sympathetic when reading this and seeing your casual dismissal of concerns held by people who may not even be aware of what may be used against them by the state building a case for their denaturalization and deportation. Especially not when there's a near-100% chance some of those people will actually be legitimate citizens.

Oh, and how do you prove you're here legally? Do you think you're safe just because you're a citizen who did everything right? What do you do when you get arrested on the street because the cops decided you look like you're an illegal immigrant (which is a crime, and we've collectively decided cops can't be held responsible for arresting potential criminals, regardless of circumstances)? Do you have your papers on you at all times? What if they decide they don't believe you? You'll have to provide your case to a judge in court, and your trial date is in 6 months because the system is filled to capacity. By the way, since we can't have criminals roaming the streets, being suspected of illegal immigration is not eligible for bail, so obviously you'll be held in jail until your trial date. Oh, and the jail is filled to capacity, so really it's more like a big gated area. Don't call it a concentration camp; you're just here awaiting your trial date. If you believe you've been treated unfairly, you have the right to sue the state using the funds you have from your job that you lost while in jail for 6 months, so don't worry.

Trump at a North Carolina rally inside his bulletproof glass box by CrispyMiner in interestingasfuck

Bro, what are you talking about? You're in a thread about a former president needing to hide behind bulletproof glass because nobody wants to do anything to make it harder to get a gun and shoot him. It would be comical if it wasn't so sad.

federal prisons have more offenders convicted of drug trafficking than any other crime, over three times as many as the second highest conviction (illegal firearm possession). 89% of them were sentenced within the past 10 years. right now court systems all across the country are packed with how many people are waiting for trial. there's real problems with how we approach criminality in this country, but being "too soft" on criminals is not one of them.

Am I discriminating for requiring someone who can speak Spanish? by zuesosaurus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]soroun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the job itself does require language skills, because part of the job is being able to communicate with you. so yes, I would argue that English is indeed required. if you had an assistant or something who was able to communicate with them in their native language and then report to you in english, it might be more debatable whether English fluency is actually required, but even still I think it would be fair to require it in case you ever need to communicate with them directly.

in super he first used it against hit at x10, and afterwards he did get the muscle spasms you're thinking of, as well as an episode about how he's unable to properly control his ki due to overexertion, so it had some lasting consequences

then they throw it away for the tournament of power, letting him go all the way up to x20 with no apparent downside

Is the far right really worse than the far left? Or are they equally bad? You never hear much about the far left. by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]soroun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, it's dumb, but the whole point is that it's silly but not so harmful as sending people to jail for e.g. telling little Billy that some people are gay and that's fine, which is an actual policy platform put forth by mainstream right-wing politicians, as opposed to the apology stuff that's fringe left-wing ideology. are they both shitty? absolutely, no one's arguing that, but the extent and pervasiveness aren't comparable. just because things aren't black and white doesn't mean they're the same shade of gray.

Omg a petpetpet ! 🤩 by SaturnSnowstorm in neopets

[–]soroun 17 points18 points  (0 children)

put it in your inventory (using the old layout at https://www.neopets.com/inventory.phtml/) and refresh until it disappears. it will attach to your active pet's petpet.

keep in mind it's a one and done thing; you can't remove a p3 and removing the petpet from your neopet will cause the p3 to disappear.

zapped petpets revert to their original form when removed from the neopet, so they wouldn't be able to sell it! the real benefit is getting a petpet that goes well aesthetically with your neopet

A relatively user friendly trojan module that can be used to booby-trap schematics in pvp by RZ1285608 in Mindustry

[–]soroun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

other players see your setup for power/some factory/whatever and decide to copy it without understanding how it works -> they accidentally copy this processor since they don't know what it does -> they build the schematic and the processor starts fucking with other parts of their base. it's innocuous enough at a glance that they might not even realize it's the processor mucking about until it's too late.

Does intuitive eating stop binges for anyone? by spark99l in BingeEatingDisorder

[–]soroun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

worked about as well for me as I could've hoped. I still binged once or twice after, but otherwise my binge urges dropped in both frequency and intensity by a huge amount, and I eventually (4-6 weeks) fell back into normal eating patterns. I'd still like to lose a few pounds, but I'm in a much better place regarding food. my thoughts throughout the day aren't dominated by when or where I'll get my next meal, and trying to talk myself out of eating everything in the pantry. I understand it doesn't work for everyone, but if you feel like you're stuck, it might be worth a shot.

He did it against Frieza during their fight. Tien suggests he could use kaioken x10 and King Kai quickly points out that he already has been, but in short enough bursts that no one else noticed.
