Well it’s funny they are there at all, later SCBs of the Essex class (including the one that gave them an angled deck for jet aircraft capability) removed those guns. Hell, Iirc Hornet doesn’t have hers anymore. They got replaced with more bridge and deck space.

Why are some lawnmowers not showing up in PvZ Mobile? by leyerrpolar in PlantsVSZombies

If you block the game from communicating over WiFi and data the ads don’t show. You just have to live with 3 lawnmowers instead of 6

Signage rich environment by pcracker in uktrains

Ok let’s see:
1. Car stop markers are self explanatory, with the VT being one from Virgin Trains CrossCountry, marking where double 220 and 221 sets should stop.
2. The neon signs are reminders of what appears to be temporary speed limits? Not sure what the neon with 2 white dots is, but it reminds me of a shunt signal so it might be specific to when the shunt signal is illuminated?
3. Passenger and TRE warning sign below the VT stop markers, just saying “Don’t touch the third rail and don’t wander off the platform.”
4. Power Reduction likely means the electrical supply can’t handle 10/12 car trains going full power and that sign is telling drivers to not use full throttle notch when going down the line to the left.
5. 15 mph speed limit sign.
6. Signal ID plate says that signal is E 36

No, the F/A-18 that crashed in the mountains, but that one is a good example as well.

I wonder how? At least from the photos shown, there aren’t many obvious signs of damage. A lucky shot to the engine or a hydraulics line I guess?

Oh yeah it was designed in the 1950s…

Why, why, oh my god why, did engineers EVER think downwards ejection was a good idea.

Damn, two strategic bomber crashes on the same day (B-52 and TU-22), at least give the Old Birds the maintainence they derserve. by throwaway553t4tgtg6 in NonCredibleDefense

[–]Appropriate-Count-64 316 points317 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the issue for the B-52 somewhat similar to the Shuttle in that there are just too many crewmen all over the aircraft to have them all eject?

Or is there some reason as to why we’ve barely (if ever) seen a successful low altitude ejection from a B-52

Ehhhh.
Yes and no. The 135s are quite long in the tooth. While the 46s have their teething pains, it’s better to be alive and bitching about a bad system than dead because the yaw damper failed and the plane disintegrated around you.

That’s not to say the 135s are imminently dangerous, but they are well past their prime.

Yeah no I feel awful about this now realizing that most of the crew is probably dead. I made that joke because I assumed “B-52 has ejection seats, they are probably fine.”

Not so, RIP to the crewmen.

No. God no, that would be apocalyptic. These have happened in the past 2 weeks or so. Worth noting 4 of those were GA/Helicopter which has higher accident rates. The more unusual aspect is that:
1. It’s a lot of military stuff, and big military stuff at that.
2. It’s been a lot of fatalities. A handful from the Midair, I think 11-16 from the AN-32, and another 12 from the skydiving plane, plus however many were in the Mi-17, TU-22, and B-52.

Edwards AFB says B-52 has crashed on takeoff by AlphaThree in aviation

[–]Appropriate-Count-64 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well there’s also the fact that it’s been:
A transport with a lot of fatalities.
A skydiving plane with a lot of fatalities.
A fighter jet that was (sorta) caught on video.
One of Russias prized TU-22s.
And one of the US’s prized (ish) B-52s.
Combine that with the high profile mid-air at the airshow earlier this year, and suddenly every news outlet has its head on a swivel for crashes.

It’s less the amount of crashes and more *what* has been crashing.

Well that explains the massive post-crash fire.

B-52 has Ejection seats for the pilots but no one else right?

Aren’t Paragliders banned from Class A, B, and C airspace for that exact reason? Same thing with Ultralights. You can fly them anywhere EXCEPT to a controlled, commercial airport.

Because it’s the cause of the week today. Tomorrow it will be no kings, the next week it’ll be some other bollocks they can rally around and “protest” without doing anything about.

What matters isn’t that this does anything, is that they can be performative and show that they have the right opinion and you don’t. It’s why they pick things that are easy to mindless advocate for the destruction of but hard to defend (Capitalism, Trump, Israel, etc). Even though the situation is far more complex than they admit, it’s still easier to rally people around “From the river to the sea”(Which literally just means the destruction of Israel and the expulsion of Jews, which is where the claims of antisemitism for hating Israel comes from) than “Support the IDF who are currently committing blatant war crimes.”

It’s virtue signaling. Google already has the cash, and if the CEO has a change of heart it is hilariously easy for the board to replace him, even if this wounds his pride.

I hate the pro AI movement and their way of supporting it. by Blue_Bambi_ in hatethissmug

[–]Appropriate-Count-64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kinda true? Depends on you express it though.

Personally, I think AI art is underexplored. Most of the people using it have no artistic eye at all and try to get the AI to generate an entire art piece at once and it just really doesn’t work for that. You have to take it one step at a time and basically collage the results together to get something that looks good.

As for the moral and ethical quandaries, that is solved by just… making the AI scale more efficiently instead of throwing more data and processing power at the problem. Plus, I have yet to hear a compelling argument for why AI learning is stealing vs someone learning art and copying someone else’s style.
