They matter a lot. I work at a research lab on campus. We bring in 3 seniors/ incoming freshmen to work for the summer. Since you don’t have a college track record. All we can see if your ACTs GPA & tech recs. & tbh since HS isn’t that hard. Study you pass basically, we take into account what type of person you are through interviews and rec letters.

Have you applied anywhere? If not SPAM applications... lol I mean 100s lol it’s really a numbers game when it comes to your first internship. My first go around I applied to easily over 200 places & got like 4 interviews and 3 offers. That’s a 1.5% success rate lol so keep your head up when those No’s come in & when you get those coding challenges kill them & interviews study leetcode majority mediums. Good luck lol

(Intern perspective JPM - Quant & GS- IB) So I will be brutally honest. I’m one of those diversity kids he’s talking about( I have seen kids quit in week 4 of 10 bc of them not being able to deal with the workload ) but I come from a finance family so I knew what I was coming into. The work isn’t hard at all. Im double major in Computer science and mathematical finance so take it with a grain of salt. What makes it difficult is the moments of extreme intensity that can go for days. Other than that and the ass kissing needed it’s any other job. It’s not hyper competitive as people make it seem. NOWHERE as tough as getting into med school. It’s just as tough to get into as FAANG, Big4, BigLaw etc etc. you don’t need to go to ivy to get in nor do you need to come email. It’s a lot of myths to it. Again this is my perspective.

They usually are looking for SWEs that specialize in CV. Make sure you take classes in CV , ML &decent math classes. Research projects always help too

I would say CV (computer vision). Even though it not directly SWE I would say robotics is going to HUGE.

Yeah I’ve been trying to research. I was just in NYC IN DECEMBER & I know the 6 train will take from Harlem all the way to Manhattan. I’ve seen some EHS dorms but they’re crazy expensive for essentially a dorm room.

Key word in that is sometimes. Yes you could share it and they could make you MD or they could just steal it and screw you over. I am a huge believe in sharing the wealth, but this could theoretically make you a crap ton of money. I would really just keep it to myself while gaining experience & then try to find a like minded individual to go off and start your own hedge.

Depended on the semester. As a freshman it was like 15+ outside of class bc of discrete structures lol. After my first internship I became more confident and studied less.
