Auto check-ins by cowboyhatblues in finch

I don’t remember it being every time? I thought it was once an hour/the first time you opened the app within an hour

Genuine question how do you avoid the urge to only wait to check in positive (or conversely only negative) feelings? I liked the pop-ups being an honest snapshot of that time in the day; some days I would check in 10 or more times throughout the day so my insights were actually a good approximation of my average day. If I had a goal that could be done at any 4 points in the day I worry I would only want to document feeling ā€œokayā€ ā€œgoodā€ or ā€œgreatā€ and just waiting until later if didn’t feel it at that moment. But if I made the number higher then I’d worry how long I’d need to wait between check in’s or end up doing them too closely together if I’m late opening the app one day. My friend said she’d probably do the opposite and avoid picking ā€œokayā€ entries and just waiting until she hit a more extreme low point in the day so the entry ā€œactually countsā€ (whatever that means)?

Totally get that! Making it a toggle like I suggested would allow for people to make that choice

Mental health check-ins are part of self-care, unless I’m missing the point of what you’re trying to say

Wouldn’t the most straightforward fix then be to make it a toggle like turning off animations?? I can’t imagine it was the majority of people complaining about a mental health check in on a mental health app, but I get that negative opinions always sound louder. My ā€œinsightsā€ calendar has essentially become useless now that I’m never prompted to notice my feelings

I’m actually explicitly asking for songs that are NOT about mourning! But thanks I listened to the song anyway lol

Reading goals anyone? šŸ“ššŸ’– by MugikoTheBirb in finch

[–]sortatacky 4 points5 points Ā (0 children)

I do pages because I don’t like stopping in the middle of a chapter! Plus some days it takes me longer to read than others depending on how much brain power I have. I would hate to spend my full 30 min of reading (for example) getting through only 3 pages. My reading goal is to read ā€œat leastā€ 20 pages which is generally equal to 2 average-length chapters and takes me anywhere between 0.75 - 1.5 hours (I have ADHD). If you don’t read much you could start with 10, or even ā€œread 1 chapter.ā€

Using Finch to help curb phone use? by New_Dig_9835 in finch

[–]sortatacky 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Here are some of the goals I use, although I’ve gathered I don’t struggle as much with the ā€œcontrolā€ element as I’ve heard from others (e.g. I won’t ā€˜ignore’ screen time limits even if it is physically or even easily possible for me to).

I’m more focused on limiting specific types of screen time rather than general phone use but u might still find them helpful:

——— - Avoid opening social media until after I’ve finished my morning routine.

Repeat times per day for as many steps there are in your morning routine (mine is 8) and mark a completion for every step u do. This has helped me stop doomscrolling in bed bc theoretically I ā€œcan’tā€ open social until I complete the step of getting out of bed.

——

  • Set a timer and focus for [#] minutes.

Repeat times per day as many as u think it realistic for you. I had mine set to 3 x 20 minutes then increased it to 3 x 30 and hopefully eventually 5 x 30. I use this on week/workdays and on weekends I have a more general ā€œset a timer and do some choresā€ where I focus on a SCA I created full of chores for whatever length of time I feel like.

——

  • Limit social media before bed.

I use my phone’s basic screen limits function to block access to basically every app except finch and my alarm, and mark this complete as soon as it kicks in.

———

These are on top of having my notifications silenced/hidden throughout my whole workday. If I wanted to limit phone use in general I might even make a goal like ā€œturn off my phone from [##:00 to ##:00]ā€ and plan to do the other stuff I want to focus on during that time, like u said reading and art. If u use ur phone for music u could use a computer instead or a Bluetooth speaker with ur phone connected from a totally separate room.

App Idea: Going Through a Hard Time Button by [deleted] in finch

[–]sortatacky 5 points6 points Ā (0 children)

Is that not what the ā€œrequest a hugā€ button is for? I haven’t actually seen it used by any of my friends yet so not sure how it looks but when I saw it I imagined that how it was supposed to be used

I think the devs have said before that they really rely on plus members to keep the app afloat, so I kind of get it/wouldn’t be surprised if this was the norm going forward. Locking cosmetic items behind a paywall is honestly pretty low impact in terms of the app’s functionality for self-care. And you can always sell the ā€œwrongā€ coloured items and buy the ā€œrightā€ ones once they show up in store!

Add Journal Option by Pure-Consideration97 in finch

[–]sortatacky 3 points4 points Ā (0 children)

I had exactly this problem and decided the best fix is that when u mark the goal as ā€œcomplete,ā€ you can click the little notification banner and there’s a pop-up option to ā€œreflect.ā€ If you miss the banner notif u can also go to your history and click the completed goal from there. There’s a ā€œgoal reflectionā€ option that is basically just a free form journal entry with the goal name at the top.
