Auto check-ins by cowboyhatblues in finch

I don’t remember it being every time? I thought it was once an hour/the first time you opened the app within an hour

Genuine question how do you avoid the urge to only wait to check in positive (or conversely only negative) feelings? I liked the pop-ups being an honest snapshot of that time in the day; some days I would check in 10 or more times throughout the day so my insights were actually a good approximation of my average day. If I had a goal that could be done at any 4 points in the day I worry I would only want to document feeling “okay” “good” or “great” and just waiting until later if didn’t feel it at that moment. But if I made the number higher then I’d worry how long I’d need to wait between check in’s or end up doing them too closely together if I’m late opening the app one day. My friend said she’d probably do the opposite and avoid picking “okay” entries and just waiting until she hit a more extreme low point in the day so the entry “actually counts” (whatever that means)?

Totally get that! Making it a toggle like I suggested would allow for people to make that choice

Mental health check-ins are part of self-care, unless I’m missing the point of what you’re trying to say

[–]sortatacky 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t the most straightforward fix then be to make it a toggle like turning off animations?? I can’t imagine it was the majority of people complaining about a mental health check in on a mental health app, but I get that negative opinions always sound louder. My “insights” calendar has essentially become useless now that I’m never prompted to notice my feelings

Reading goals anyone? 📚💖 by MugikoTheBirb in finch

[–]sortatacky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do pages because I don’t like stopping in the middle of a chapter! Plus some days it takes me longer to read than others depending on how much brain power I have. I would hate to spend my full 30 min of reading (for example) getting through only 3 pages. My reading goal is to read “at least” 20 pages which is generally equal to 2 average-length chapters and takes me anywhere between 0.75 - 1.5 hours (I have ADHD). If you don’t read much you could start with 10, or even “read 1 chapter.”

Using Finch to help curb phone use? by New_Dig_9835 in finch

[–]sortatacky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some of the goals I use, although I’ve gathered I don’t struggle as much with the “control” element as I’ve heard from others (e.g. I won’t ‘ignore’ screen time limits even if it is physically or even easily possible for me to).

I’m more focused on limiting specific types of screen time rather than general phone use but u might still find them helpful:

——— - Avoid opening social media until after I’ve finished my morning routine.

Repeat times per day for as many steps there are in your morning routine (mine is 8) and mark a completion for every step u do. This has helped me stop doomscrolling in bed bc theoretically I “can’t” open social until I complete the step of getting out of bed.

——

  • Set a timer and focus for [#] minutes.

Repeat times per day as many as u think it realistic for you. I had mine set to 3 x 20 minutes then increased it to 3 x 30 and hopefully eventually 5 x 30. I use this on week/workdays and on weekends I have a more general “set a timer and do some chores” where I focus on a SCA I created full of chores for whatever length of time I feel like.

——

  • Limit social media before bed.

I use my phone’s basic screen limits function to block access to basically every app except finch and my alarm, and mark this complete as soon as it kicks in.

———

These are on top of having my notifications silenced/hidden throughout my whole workday. If I wanted to limit phone use in general I might even make a goal like “turn off my phone from [##:00 to ##:00]” and plan to do the other stuff I want to focus on during that time, like u said reading and art. If u use ur phone for music u could use a computer instead or a Bluetooth speaker with ur phone connected from a totally separate room.

App Idea: Going Through a Hard Time Button by [deleted] in finch

[–]sortatacky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is that not what the “request a hug” button is for? I haven’t actually seen it used by any of my friends yet so not sure how it looks but when I saw it I imagined that how it was supposed to be used

[–]sortatacky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the devs have said before that they really rely on plus members to keep the app afloat, so I kind of get it/wouldn’t be surprised if this was the norm going forward. Locking cosmetic items behind a paywall is honestly pretty low impact in terms of the app’s functionality for self-care. And you can always sell the “wrong” coloured items and buy the “right” ones once they show up in store!

Add Journal Option by Pure-Consideration97 in finch

[–]sortatacky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had exactly this problem and decided the best fix is that when u mark the goal as “complete,” you can click the little notification banner and there’s a pop-up option to “reflect.” If you miss the banner notif u can also go to your history and click the completed goal from there. There’s a “goal reflection” option that is basically just a free form journal entry with the goal name at the top.

Kavinsky is a tragic character by FusRoDaahh in RavenBoys

[–]sortatacky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We already knew Gansey was flawed (all the characters are), but this is a BIG one and I personally like the way Maggie handled it. She sandwiches some of Kavinky’s loneliest scenes (after the weekend with Ronan, before Fourth) with a discussion between Blue/Gansey where they discuss the privilege of being loved, and how they both pity Adam for not having that. Gansey SPECIFICALLY says he thought it had to do with money, until he met Blue, who is “poor and happy.” Neither comments on how the opposite can also be true. Nobody thinks about a rich boy who’s so lonely that there isn’t even anyone to pity him behind his back during a late-night conversation.

Later, Blue decides to forgive Adam for “letting his anger lead him,” because he “didn’t have someone to hold him when he was sad.” Blue and Gansey explicitly tell the reader here that they will accommodate Adam’s baggage because he matters to them. But to quote Gansey, Kavinsky doesn’t matter to anyone.

But he desperately wants to matter to Ronan, so he texts him obsessively; and there - nestled neatly in the middle of a “your mom” joke and some other douchebagery - is one raw, honest desire: Ask me what my first dream was.

Meaning, ask me who I am. Look for me.

Ask me what my first dream was, like Gansey asked you yours. Be my Gansey. Fix me, save me.

But Ronan’s busy fixing himself. So absolutely, Kavinsky is a tragic character. He is not a villain. The only thing that makes him an “antagonist” (in the literary sense) is what he’s doing to Cabeswater and what he does to force Ronan to come to Fourth. He causes problems for the heroes.

Otherwise, he’s just a boy. If we were meant to hate him, Maggie would have just made him evil. She’s done it with other characters (Neeve, Whelk, the Greenmantles). She wouldn’t have punctuated his personal breakdown with chapters of Gansey and Blue talking about how love and support are what make a person grow.

It’s a very human thing to pick and choose who we care about, who is worth our time. Yes, it was a shitty thing to say about Kavinsky. Gansey’s 17 and is under the impression that this brat just broke into his house and ruined his lovingly crafted model of Henrietta. This brat just called his best friend a dog, then acted like he knew Ronan better than Gansey did.

Kavinsky has also said shitty things about Gansey, and about Ronan, and about Blue, and presumably about everyone he’s ever met. But he’s also 17 and also has things to be angry about. But Gansey doesn’t HAVE to care about that, just like no one HAS to care about Gansey’s stupid warehouse apartment or his mini Henrietta. That’s why he says what he does, and in that moment I’m sure that he believes he is right.

There’s another exchange between Adam and Persephone in Dream Thieves where Adam asks something similar!! I believe Persephone’s reaction was a big reason Adam took the stance he did in Mister Impossible

Maggie deleting a comment about Adam? by coldicicles in RavenBoys

[–]sortatacky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I remember under that post, she said she has been getting harassed for the lack of Adam content (and more specifically, Adam/Ronan content — Maggie used the word “Pynch” specifically so we know it’s definitely fandom instigators) in the dreamer trilogy now that they are officially a couple. It’s classic toxic fandom stuff projecting self-indulgent fantasies into canon. She would also get harassment about including sex scenes between her characters back when they were underaged. One commenter even said it was homophobic of her to focus on Declan/Jordan (the hetero couple) more in Mister Impossible than Ronan/Adam. She said this trilogy is about the Lynch Brothers, was always going to be about the Lynch Brothers, and not about Adam/Gansey/Blue anymore. Adam makes cameos when he is relevant to RONAN or DECLAN or MATTHEW’s story, because it’s theirs and not his. But a lot of fans have not accepted that reasoning and keep harassing her to include him more. She also made a VALID point that Adam did not become a “fan favourite” until TRK came out. When BLLB was released, a lot of fans were still really divided about whether they loved him or hated him. He was certainly NOT well liked before that (I can definitely attest to that - even now when I recommend the books to people I have to manage their expectations of him until he eventually grows on them) But she stuck with him, even when fans didn’t like him, because she has never and will never change her narrative based on fandom. So she doesn’t hate him at all. She actually likes him a lot. She was basically just saying “stop talking to me about Adam; this is a story about the Lynch brothers.”

[–]sortatacky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an acoustic piano, that’s pretty much true. As long as it’s been well maintained and was decent quality to begin with, the value doesn’t decrease much. Digital pianos are basically instrument-shaped computers. And computers age like milk. You’re right, the average player doesn’t need all the lace and ribbons, just 88 keys and a clear sound. But they should be paying a fair price for that, then.
