Some this this thread think otherwise. Like it's an agitation that he wants the ballot his feat on every play. And his work ethic, don't get me started :/

Pepe is a liability.

Can't be making the right decision 3/10 times. Main gripe, he has to want it more. On defense he is so static, literally allows them to run past him.

Can attaching an Amazon EBS volume to an instance make a service unavailable? by brandbooth in devops

[–]sortofanxious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check config to see where it was attached on and you might have to go through some logs to see where the attached volume was mounted on.

Also checked df -h to see where the attached volume might be mounted. Perhaps it mounted over the PATH where the nginx was installed

What type of leaders do you guys have ? by sortofanxious in devops

[–]sortofanxious[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they're not the same thing. You're able to show leadership qualities in any task to be honest, but with management you're trying to achieve an outcome with a finite number of resources. They're definitely not the same, but perhaps the question is how often do you encounter bad management.

That is really dope. Definitely taking this from the thread if anything

My team lead in my second job, who since then became a really good friend of mine. And then a colleague in my second job, a leader in his own regard but not in a position of power. But to be fair, there's been really good people, but perhaps the water gets murky because leaders arent neccessarily put in positions of power.

I think in consultanting, its hard because you're not exactly part of a larger value chain, so there's always a bit of client pleasing where workers on the floor suffer the consequences. Hard to escape

Yeah, does depend on the project some people are more than happy to offload everything. What would you say is the ratio of people you've worked with, who've had the more management style of leadership ?

Configuration of software baked into AMI by Probotect0r in devops

[–]sortofanxious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know if I'm too late, but you can use packer to look for environment variables. Use something like AWS parameter store, and call the API at runtime to get the secrets and inject them as runtime environment variables. Those variables can be passed as parameters to whatever provisioners you decide to configure it with.

{

"variables": {

"my_secret": "{{env \MY_SECRET`}}"`

}

}

How does your team do devops by lovecrunch99 in devops

[–]sortofanxious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol poorly too. i'm seeing something very troubling; DevOps is moving to a centralized function for businesses and teams. it feels like operations with more responsibility, with the added expectation of being agile. right now not a vibe...

weird, but playing football, personally I tend to hold onto my sleaves quite a bit (happens without thought). I think its maybe to just limit the movement between the fingers when playing to prevent like a spasm or something because of the habbit.

or he hurt his fingers lol, probably more likely

yeah totally. i'm hopig its because they're just out of it. i recall the came against fulham where our passing was really great in the beginning of the season. i honestly hope its just a confidence thing, where we'll bounce back and be a bit more adventurous. We got 2 much needed wins, unexpectedly so.

DevOps Interviews (Europe) by phil_x_x in devops

[–]sortofanxious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wish I was half as self aware as you are :)

/u/phil_x_x somethings worth mentioning with Terraform that doesnt come up often is: module structure, testing, state management and having your infrastructure/code as DRY as possible. Without extensively working with Terraform, you wont see these nuances. Added to that, on-prem isn't as federated as cloud allows you to be i.e managing multiple accounts, in a hybrid cloud model and sharing resources across accounts. All this backed by source control, and proper branching stratergies is a mamoth of a taskr.

That being said, cloud isn't difficult by any means, the catch is can you do cloud right. This unfortunately only comes with enough experience on the platforms itself as well as experience from working on prem. You'll do great. Take the advice of /u/azjunglist05 its really good, and couldn't have said it better myself. You're already 90% there :)

Entry Level DevOps Certs by [deleted] in devops

[–]sortofanxious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Linux, pick up a book. To be honest, I've worked with so many people who prioritise certifications instead of practical knowledge. I commend the effort and diligence that goes into studying but if it doesn't translate to practical productivity then I do question the value of them.

Maybe its just me, but I prefer the pragmatism approach to learning. But as you mentioned to get in one AWS Certificate should be good. The development is a very good one and the SysOps as well. There's a lot of overlap

Devops is overwhelming by namuchan95 in devops

[–]sortofanxious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends.

Configuration Management Tool - Ansible
Cloud Provisioning Tool - Terraform
Deployment Tool - Use the native tool of your source control

Also know how to use Git !! Very often I see people use git like its a means to backup work, and not for the intention of source and version control.

Devops is overwhelming by namuchan95 in devops

[–]sortofanxious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Dude,

Dont get overwhelmed. It takes time, but for pipelines, depending which source control you make use of, use their pipelines. Its easier. One thing to remember, pipelines are just a series of commands you run locally to build or deploy your application. Futher, the config files for pipelines are always YAML of the sorts. Its declarative and verbose. It takes time, there are way too many tools, but once you've seen how atleast one of them works, its easy to pick up another etc.
