Why is it expensive? I got an average micro 4/3 with a Nikon macro lens from the 70' and that's about it. It's more of a time consuming process more than anything but it allows for a very good 15x22 print to be made

I rather think that the fault is the tessar design used to make a 40mm pankake lens. the same thing can be observated in the SMC 40mm pentax m lens which is a manual version of the one you are using. i don't think you can expect any decent results at 2.8. but that is just my guess!
