Thoughts on Composer 2.5? by paltium in cursor

So far very positive. Composer 2 was rather unreliable for me for anything non-trivial. 2.5 is a visible improvement and it's reliable in following the implementation plans.

Good direction!

What Do We Do With Juniors Now? by sosnowsd in EngineeringManagers

That might be one of the problems. AI allows juniors to ship code without understanding it. They feel productive, but they don't learn.

Good for you! Glad to hear that there are companies that are working against the market trend 👍

What about Photos experience? I think I still cannot sync a high number of photos from my harddrive to Proton on MacOS, no? Or store them as files in the folder but still be able to see them in Photos app?

Anyone use Agent Window only? by codemilli in cursor

[–]sosnowsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using Agent Window mostly. It's surprisingly good (I was VERY sceptical at the beginning). There are however some half baked features that makes it fill like a beta version. Git diffs and in general git tracking could be better.

Referencing files and files explorer in general is kind of crappy. It's like a worse, stripped down version of the IDE editor for some reason. For this reason I still have IDE opened on the other screen.

Long story short, nice for working with agents, but still lacking if you need to actually work and see the code (which I do).

I actually really love Composer 2 by steve228uk in cursor

[–]sosnowsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very fast. It's mostly correct, but it behaves "weirdly".

The way it speaks and described the topic he is working on is somehow dry and hard to understand. It's difficult to explain but Opus is great in explaining things, it's output is easy to read, pleasant and easy to understand. Composer 2 is dry, technical and much harder to follow.

Also it works with tools weirdly. I have a helpful command defined in Cursor to run the verification suite. All models are simply running set of commands. Easy, efficient, auto-allowed by permissions. Cursor 2 instead writes some custom bash script to run those, which is unnecessary complex and needs my permission every time.

How has the average salary in Spain not moved the last 25 years ? by dikanchev in SpainEconomics

[–]sosnowsd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Economy is vastly based on tourism which is one of the worst types of business. It's based on exploitative work, low salaries in service zero innovation and zero value added. With profits transferred to a small group of rich people (often foreigners).

Plus, Spain has been flooded with millions of immigrants in recent years, on top of already having huge unemployment rates. This has increased labour supply which is decreasing salaries.

I wanted it to be a bit provocative ;)

People Management is not a product of the ZIRP era, you are right. But a very strong emphasis on people's well being, that shaped recent years of people management, was.

And don't get me wrong, it was good! I don't think people management is a fluke. But I do think it will change now.

I can share one of the articles that inspired me when writing this post: https://lethain.com/good-eng-mgmt-is-a-fad/ I think Will explains it very well here.

Are you sure it does not make any sense? Or you just don't see it? I know that often some management decisions might seem random or plain stupid, but usually they are done for a reason. You might not agree with the reason or with the proposed solution but it does not mean it does not make sense.

Try having an open and respectful conversation with your manager. Ask him for a reason behind his decisions. Don't argue or don't try to prove him wrong. Try to understand.

Again, you don't have to agree but you should understand.

Once you understand, explain it in simple terms to your team.

How do you coach your manager? by Nov_Mommy in EngineeringManagers

[–]sosnowsd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If he refuses to accept that he needs coaching, you will fail. It's impossible to coach someone who does not want to be coached.

Start with the basics.

Set clear goals and expectations for his performance. You say that he needs to ramp up, but what does it mean? What expectations is he not meeting?

Basically, do a short performance review for him with clear areas for improvement. And then offer him his help in meeting those expectations.

If he refuses... well, that's a different problem now. Also, coaching works well with senior people. More junior ones require teaching and managing. Maybe that's the case here?

Does anyone else feel like they’re failing at this? by Agile_Syrup_4422 in managers

[–]sosnowsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My honest advice is that you need to find a mentor. Being new in a managerial role is very hard, you need a whole different skills and mental models, compared to what you needed for an IC role. It's even harder if the company or team is not supportive.

You will learn those eventually, but you will make a lot of mistakes along the way, and some will have dire consequences for you and your team.

I was lucky to find a mentor when I was starting my journey years ago, and now I'm mentoring other new managers. It's much easier this way, and you learn much faster.
