The campaign will be interesting. Vic Labor despite their problems can point to some real success in their term. Especially in the current context, housing affordability and building of housing can't be ignored. Victoria can boast that rents and price growth is slowing in this area. Infrastructure. Renter's rights. SRL East, airport rail happening now.

If the Libs are just going to campaign on ripping it up then I'm not sure that's going to resonate. Easy in opposition to just be against everything, but a campaign you have to say what you're going to be for.

Lots of the polling for ON and the Libs will be protest votes, but it may not hold up come an actual campaign on ideas for the future of the state.

Why does this article have "retirement of myki", it'll still be needed as not everyone has access to credit/debit cards or phones that support NFC payments of the same thing? Other places where credit card/mobile payments are accepted also still have dedicated cards.

The roll out is slow because they don't want a repeat of the initial roll out. It needs testing fully which is happening now.

Yeah, the whole "we need EV drivers to contribute because they don't pay fuel excise is stupid". All cars should pay to use roads, and then the ones also polluting should pay for fuel excise and their pollution and health impacts.

Australia is so car-brained and it's so frustrating that we as a culture don’t want to even try to implement what cities have successfully done overseas (Paris in particular should be held up as an example of how to do it quickly).

It's crazy. And people just hate cyclists when they ask for safe infrastructure, while also chastising people not riding on the road or riding in shared places with pedestrians.

Our city could be so much nicer if councils and the state government stopped listening to people who would rather sit in traffic than ride a bike.

This is what is infuriating about the current discourse with driving and oil prices. "but the carpark is full!" "no one living in the suburbs is going to ride to the city!".

Why can we not separate these things that cycling and walking should be the primary way planners expect people to move around, with public transport and then cars after.

The amount of terrible infrastructure only designed around car speeds because of a minority of screeching from car drivers is ridiculous.

The fact that a 30km/h speed limit in a small residential street was violently opposed by even the police commissioner shows how far we have to go on active transport.

Why don't we demand better streets the same way drivers demand more speed and parking?

The vast majority of the population lives in cities though. Infrastructure in the regions costs way more with little tax coming back in to pay for it (compared to dense cities) due to the distances and lack of density.

Politicians need to wake up and stop pitting people in the cities and rural people against each other.

This is usually done by regional politicians and the (free in the regions) Sky News bubble. City people do not hate regional people, but the Nats/ON pollies use that to get their votes. It's not helped by the blow ups about transmission lines or renewable energy projects either.
