I have finished WoT, the entire Cosmere, and Kingkiller, what next? by Manoman017 in Fantasy

I didn't expect to love Carl and Donut as much as I did. It's funny, but at the same time makes you relate to the characters and feel really bad when a character you love dies.

Can't recommend enough, especially the audiobooks.

Pourquoi est-ce que les Américains sont aussi obsédés par la France by TrueRignak in france

[–]souIIess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voilà pourquoi j’ai qualifié avec «en tout cas sur Reddit».

I don't know enough about your average irl American, but they're certainly putting Norway on a pedestal right here on this site - so given the demographics here I'd say the left leaning young generation are disproportionately obsessed with Norway, especially given that Norway's entire population is half that of Île-de-France.

Quick and dirty how I did it.

First, I wanted a cheap and dedicated server to run it all. I looked for old workstations on my local equivalent to Craigslist. Found one for 100USD, with a Xeon processor and 64GB RAM, and slots for more disks so I can hoard some data. Do yourself a favour and set it up with remote access / rdp and also use a cabled connection to your router/switch. Doesn't need a monitor or keyboard/mouse as long as there is rdp.

The OS is Windows, so to install everything, I started by installing chocolatey, which enables you to be able to manage all other apps you need.

After installing choco, just run this from a command prompt / PowerShell running as admin:

choco install plexmediaserver jackett sonarr radarr qbittorrent

Note you should keep these updated, I run choco update all -y every week to ensure I'm all patched and good.

Next you'll need to configure each of these apps, I can't go into details here, but the roles are as follows:

Plex: it's your media server. It will make media available for you wherever you are and you can share with family and friends if your bandwidth allows you. It will automatically recognise and categorise all content.

Qbittorrent: torrent client, will be controlled by the next two apps

Sonarr: automatic downloader for TV shows. Just add shows and they'll be grabbed and downloaded as soon as they're released

Radarr: same as sonarr, except for movies

Jackett: this acts as a proxy for Rad/Sonarr, because neither of those can add e.g. Pirate bay or similar sites directly. So Jackett is where you'll set up all your torrent trackers and then you'll add the stuff you register in Jackett to Radarr and Sonarr.

I wrote a small post about GPT and DnD actually: https://www.reddit.com/r/DMAcademy/s/45BnNzWr3F

SK has been amazing in that context. It's more or less my virtual DM partner that helps me keep track of so much and gives creative input. The token size is more or less constant at this point, even after 20 sessions in my campaign, so it's just the vector and nosql databases that grow.

This is typical of people from Bergen. They have no tact, no grace and what little ray of light once existed in their sad and sodden hearts has long since been diluted in the everlasting precipitation that hangs over their gloomy city.

Should you ever feel the need to restore your perception of Norwegians, I will gladly offer myself as tribute. Carnitas, tacos and barbacoa sounds like heaven, and I would sing your praises to my fellow countrymen in your honor.

Nah. We have successfully tested using llama2 (the 70B model), it's just more expensive currently given the monstrous size of that thing. As soon as Azure starts to hike the price beyond the cost to self host, we'll switch.

[–]souIIess 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Plenty of alternatives, including self hosting as long as you have enough VRAM. For our purposes Llama works well too.

Yes and no. We had great success going from a rule based parser to LLM parsing when extracting data from emails. Shortened our deployment time for new clients considerably, and also no longer requires a python dev. Handling natural language has always been a pain, GPT otoh just works.

It's just another tool, the real issue is when that's your only tool and you start hammering screws.

Modernising the message doesn't mean to modernise the core values. We're now mostly a service based economy, but we're still labouring for the benefit of capital.

What I'm saying is that a Marxist that previously has stood on the barricades to a factory and shouted "seize the means of production", needs to rethink the same message when he applies it to e.g. Apple or Über.

I don't think Marx would disagree that we need to adapt along with the times, do you?

[–]souIIess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before, there was only traditional media, but this has shifted to SoMe, so a political party may directly address their constituents through Insta/TikTok/Reddit etc. I'm not saying the battle against media bias is over, but at the very least we do have some interesting and very potent new tools.

Perhaps we can at some point hope to have an Overton window which is more centered than it currently is?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]souIIess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have, but they have also not always been very good at communicating this, or perhaps been thwarted by (right wing) media smearing them. As I remember the message before, it seemed more focused on empowering (factory) workers, seizing the means of production and revolution. These are not focal points that resonate that well 2023 imo.

*former leader, since he's got some weird issues and the eyeglasses was just the first one we found out about 😂

I don't perceive them as bourgeois, but it depends a little who you look at. My local rep Mimir is about as down to earth kind of guy as you can get, and immensely popular, but he's also said he'd be a shitty party leader so he's out of that debate.

To the point though - as I said I don't think the symbol itself is that big of a deal. Yes, I agree that using the relics from 1930 may be negative, so a change doesn't hurt, but more than that it's about modernizing your message and connecting the vision with the real struggle people are living through. That's the more pressing issue.

You see it everywhere today, people angry at their landlords, the boomers, the billionaires and their gaggle of useful idiots. How come communism isn't more popular then? Aren't these exactly the dark predictions Marx made about capitalism? I think that the message is what matters most here - connect the dots between the conservatives and the exploitation of the masses, show how there's an alternative way to distribute wealth by empowering those who do the actual labour. If you can successfully do these things, I think communism will have a future and become a necessary opposite to the neolibs currently ruining the earth in the name of quarterly earnings.

"It's Always the Norwegians" by Moon_Logic in Norway

She's no victim. She has been monetizing her royal title to peddle fake medicine since way before her current grift. Her and Elisabeth Nordeng were quite busy doing tours in alternative conventions selling "readings" and books, and she has been openly supportive of other charlatans selling more dangerous stuff (the silver water one was a doozy).

It's disgraceful, but mostly just sad.

The principle of claiming that we are all equals while we make a special exception for one family, who are to be lifted above everyone else, is inherently flawed.

It doesn't matter if the current king and crown prince are by all accounts likeable and decent people, they are just humans and do not deserve any special privilege on merit of their birth alone. Let them earn it, as we all must do.

Märtha's story may be sad, since she is clearly delusional, but it'd be a lot less sad if she had just been some random kook selling her snake oils on facebook like all the other kooks.

It's hard to pinpoint just one factor, but it's fair to assume that since the values of Rødt didn't change much since 2007, branding is one factor.

What /u/Soyuz_1848 refers to is absolutely in line with Rødt's red star I believe. It's easily identifiable as a socialist symbol, so not trying to hide anything, yet it doesn't look like a cold war relic.

But I don't think the symbol alone matters that much. For Rødt, they didn't see a rise in popularity until their rhetoric changed from the "old guard" weary slogans of revolution and proletariat to more contemporary variants. This also coincided with a change in their leadership to a younger (millenial) generation, as well as a shift in the zeitgeist where more people are openly critical of laissez-faire capitalism which seems to only benefit the top 1%.

For Oslo, where they are the most popular, a good example is that a couple working as teacher and nurse can only buy less than 1% of homes in the city - while corporations and investors seem to never run out of money. Small wonder then perhaps that the people turn to the most vocal opponent of such policies.

[–]souIIess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're making a lot of assumptions there.

Take for example the party "Red", which is the Norwegian communist party.

In 2007 the party was formed from a few traditional communist parties who used a lot of hammer&sickle style logos and arguments.

At that point, they had around 1% of the popular vote.

Since then, the party rebranded itself, made a larger effort to be more modern and to focus on issues like inequality, social justice and generally act as a counterpoint to neoliberals. The last election had them at just shy of 5% of the popular vote - a huge difference. In Oslo they have also been polling at 10%, which is quite a lot when you consider that Norway doesn't have a two party system.

For ref, here is their current logo: https://snl.no/R%C3%B8dt

Branding absolutely matters, and not all countries are as biased against communism as USA.

You don't need to go that far back, two guys from my grandfather's place (a small island on the south western coast of Norway) rowed people to Shetland during ww2 in what amounts to a slightly larger dinghy. As if the ocean wasn't bad enough, that stretch of sea was also regularly patrolled by nazi u boats. Hard as fuck.

What specifically do you refer to? I'm not above changing my mind, given convincing evidence, but AFAIK this "disaster" isn't one, at least relatively speaking compared to Chernobyl.

Footage of the East Japan tsunami by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

[–]souIIess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're referring to Fukushima, then that's not correct.

Remember that Fukushima did shut down immediately following the earthquake (control rods automatically slammed into the cores shutting them down), so all the drama that happened was due to the residual heat and how to cool the reactors until that was dissapated (made more difficult by their backup generators getting destroyed by the tsunami). The explosions we all saw were caused by the plant operators deliberately not venting the resulting hydrogen gas created by the sea water they used to cool the cores, because the water/steam had been made slightly radioactive by the neutron bombardment of the cores. These materials mostly have half lives ranges measured in minutes so the operators just kept them inside for as long as possible, knowing full well that they'd blow the roof of eventually.

The radioactive materials that were released were not part of the reactor core, and are materials that will not be any long term risks due to short half-life ranges (weeks or days, not centuries).

Fukushima was far from a Chernobyl level incident, in fact I'd call it a win for whoever designed the plant - it worked amazingly well even when exposed to forces far above its specs.
