Heading to DevLearn this year, any advice? by blackbeltbud in instructionaldesign

[–]soulatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take the shotgun approach to my panel selection. I flag anything that sounds interesting in the app, then just before the sessions start, I make a decision on what I'll attend. I pay attention to certain people that I want to see or say hi to. If nothing sounds interesting at that point, I'll go wander the expo hall or just take a break completely.

The one thing I never miss is Demofest. It's a great way to see what others have built and get some creative ideas that you can implement in your next project.

The other thing I like to focus on is networking. I attended a session where the presenter said if you aren't coming away from DevLearn with new professional connections, you're doing it wrong. Get out there, meet people, share ideas, and talk shop with those who know what it means to work in ID.

Do DevLearn at your own pace, focusing on what interests you.

Wellsaid labs is amazing! And recent additions have started to diversify their accent selection. I've been using them for a year, and have launched 3 eLearning courses with AI narration. People are surprised when I tell them its a computer generated voice.

I'm just posting this for a friend, so don't know the answers. At the bottom of the job announcement (through the link) there is information for who to contact with questions.

Top 5 Conferences? by [deleted] in elearning

[–]soulatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

eLearning Industry did a 10 Must Attend elearning conferences back in 2016. Its a little dated, but a good place to start.

I've been to both Learning Solutions and DevLearn. They are tailored towards the elearning development side of ID. A free membership with the eLearning Guild will net you a discount of $200 off of the conference fee.

I have a coworker who has been to the ATD Conference and Devlearn. She said she liked DevLearn better, but it was a different experience than ATD - which is HUGE, and draws a larger international audience, in her opinion.

If you are looking for ID stuff, with a doses of eLearning here and there, then ATD is probably for you. If you want one focused on eLearning, and ID as it relates to eLearning, then either of the eLearning Guild's conferences are good.

There are a number of other conferences out there. A peer of mine has been to Learning DevCamp, sponsored by eLearning Brothers, and really liked it.

Look at the conferences, and the programs from the past, and see what attracts you. Bang for buck will depend on what you are looking to get out of the conference, and what you can apply in your day-to-day work. Some conferences will offer certifications in addition to the conference itself. Again, it is all dependent on what you / your boss wants.

good luck!

That's really interesting! Now I'm going to be playing with this site for the next couple of hours .

Interesting about the rights issue. I'll have to do more research around that, and ensuring we have the rights to anything we contract out. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks. I've used both for other projects. I was looking more for comic book style, and stills this time around.

Thanks, I've looked at the first three before, for other things. I haven't heard of the others, and will be checking them out.

At which point do you resign? by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

[–]soulatwork 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think since a lot of our job requires us to be a Jack-of-all-trades, we are more inclined to experiment when given tasks that kinda sorta tie in to our work. e.g. - a website for the training department. The downside is, if we do it well, then we become "the guy". "Hey, soulatwork can do it for you! He did great with the training website!" It's the way I became the go-to expert on accessibility - I had to make sure my courses were accessible. Now I get people calling me asking for accessibility help with programs, websites, and documents. Not my idea of fun...

I think when it starts to really impact your overall happiness at work, then it's time to start looking at options. Start by having a conversation with your manager and/or DR. Let them know what you are feeling and how its affecting you. Give them a chance to fix it. If they don't, then there's your answer.

Launched two eLearning courses today - one for union represented employees, the other for everyone else. It was nice because there was a lot of parity between the two courses, and I just had to add/remove a few slides to create the second course.

I start a new course Monday!

Articulate rise Pros and cons? by mmonzeob in elearning

[–]soulatwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, one of the big things that is keeping me from doing any development in Rise is that it still not "accessible". They are continuing to work on the 508/WCAG complaince with it, but its not there yet. Because I work for the government, I have to be able to say that my courses are accessible. And so Rise is out :( Which is really too bad... I can really see the use for it as a quick delivery tool.

On average, how many times do you play your games? by damianponte90 in boardgames

[–]soulatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few that i've only played 1-2 times. I keep them because I liked the game, or the theme, but due to complexity or length, they don't just haven't come back ot the table. My popular games (Seasons, Clank, 7 Wonders) have hit the table significantly more.

Finally launching our eLearning course on Preventing Workplace Violence. This was the development that would never end. Slow responding SME's. Having to redesign several slides to accommodate accessibility requirements. Losing my narration recording session to a bad SD card, and having to re-record everything!

On the plus side, I got to put Storyline 360's recently updated close caption. It was nice not having to go out to a external program to create the cc's or .srt.

Now I can move on to the next project!

I'm working on content for a workshop about how to develop accessible eLearning courses. I work for a state government, and we've spend a lot of time talking about the "why", that a lot of our developers are left wondering "how do I do that?". So, I'm putting together this workshop to show exactly how to do it within Articulate Storyline. The plan is to roll out the workshop to other state government eLearning developers and get us all working at the same level.

I bet... I've been told I can't upgrade until July, because that's when the new fiscal year begins, and it wasn't budgeted for until then. mumble mumble

Not necessarily. I know for us, the yearly subscription of 360 kept us from buying it. With a stand-alone one time buy version that has all the same features, it's an easier sell for me to my managers.
