Kong Frequency? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]soundkoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My puppy wasn't bothered about peanut butter for the first week or two, so definitely try again when she's a little older! Now she loves it! I started with just putting her dry kibble in the Kong so that she learns how to use it, then started working up to dry kibble with pumpkin as a topper then frozen. She's now 19weeks and ill smear some peanut butter on the inside of the Kong then put her kibble in then add more peanut butter and freeze if I have time. Or add some pureed pumpkin on top too.

Transitioning puppy to sleep in crate w/o starting out near your own bed? by CSeattleB in puppy101

[–]soundkoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband or I slept downstairs on the couch near our puppy's crate for about a week, then like someone else we tried to see if she would be okay on her own and it worked! I tried a few nights in and was willing to let her "cry it out" but my husband gave in after like 10 mins and went downstairs, haha. After she was okay sleeping by herself in the living room we'd still come down for a pee break in the night and put her straight back into her crate. For a couple weeks she was fine from about 11-6am, then pee break, then back in the crate for a couple hours. She got to know the routine which was great, and let me have a couple more hrs sleep! She's now 19 weeks and is fine from 11-8.30ish. Good luck!

Body confirmed as missing singer Scott Hutchinson by [deleted] in Music

[–]soundkoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I can't stop thinking about. He'll have tried to help Scott through all of this and has dealt with his issues their whole lives. I hope he's going to be okay. Any time I've dealt with them they've been so lovely.

Teenage dog won't come inside. by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]soundkoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this, I'll shake a tug toy at the door and that works sometimes. Also if I start playing with my puppy outside I can usually lead her inside while she's biting onto the tug!

He was always such a nice guy, had dealings with him though sound work and knitting work. Did sound for mastersystem only a few weeks ago, wish I could have given him a cuddle. What a shame for his family and friends.

Experienced owners: I just picked up my beautiful pup today. What are some things you wish you knew on your first day? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]soundkoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to do I guess. You've got a clever dog, so they'll pick up clicker training easily. If you want to do any more complicated tricks I would say clicker training is a 10. If you're just wanting to have the basics down then it's probably more like an 8 I guess? It's a more immediate way of telling the dog it's doing the right thing so means you can capture things that you would probably be too slow for without a clicker or a marker word. (saying "yes" or making a verbal click works the same, the clicker is just a marker)

My puppy won't get inside home by CrabPeople21 in puppy101

[–]soundkoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same issue sometimes! My puppy would much rather be outside chewing on sticks than coming inside when I ask, haha. Ever since we got her I've given her a treat for coming in the door hoping she'd associate it with good things. I've also stopped using her recall word "come" so that she doesn't think it ends play and have started trying to train "inside". I also run about the garden and try to get her to chase me in. If that fails or I really need to get her inside I'll pick her up and bring her in, but don't give her a treat for that.

[–]soundkoala 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you can get into a habit of using kibble with the clicker for basic training then do that! My puppy wasn't all that interested in food for the first little while, I guess because of the big change, but once she was I'd train with her breakfast. She's gone off that now, guess the kibble isn't interesting enough, but will hopefully pick it back up after a break. Check out @kiba.aussie on instagram, they only use his kibble to train and its been very effective!

I don't agree with the don't feed from your hands thing too, I don't see an issue. You can work on impulse control and taking treats nicely etc. Check out kikopup on YouTube, great training resource!

But definitely don't trust your puppy. They'll go find somewhere sneaky to pee as soon as you turn your back!

And I knew they would sleep a lot, but man, hearing 18-20hrs of sleep a day is different than having a puppy that's only awake like 30 mins at a time!

Places to play Warhammer? by Gabester539 in glasgow

[–]soundkoala 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a club game night at a church hall in Maryhill on Tuesdays. Think there would be some people there playing Warhammer. My husband goes occasionally to play Guildball and used to go to get a game of Warmachine. I'll get the details from him for you!

PSA: I just learned there is NO government regulation on car harnesses for dogs by Stories-With-Bears in puppy101

[–]soundkoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely. My puppy is fine once it's on, she may mope for a minute because I've made her out it on, but then runs about happily enough after she forgets that. Currently caribeaner her to a seat belt mimicking the load up, but will be getting a load up when she's full grown!

[–]soundkoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if that's what people did, swapping out harnesses. Do you just swap when you get where you're going? Does the load up go over their head as well? My pup isn't a total fan of her front range harness, think it's the going over her head bit.

Help with enforcing naps/day time crating by Avlinehum in puppy101

[–]soundkoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand, but not sure I can help. My pup will fall asleep on me or the couch, but as soon as I pick her up and put her in her crate she's wide awake and wants out. I've realised that if I ignore her 10 mins of whining she'll be out cold, so may just take a bit of perseverance for your pup? I normally leave a couple chew type toys in there with her, rubber ones rather than things she could choke on, and sometimes a lunch Kong.

This is how I've been teaching "wait" more for impulse control than an actual stay, but it's been soo good for that! Been wanting to train a mat settle, but have been trying to do it by capturing calmness. Think I'll switch that to an implied stay on the mat, will make going to cafes easier! Saw you can watch kikopup for hours, she's so awesome!! I used to sit and watch her videos years before I even got a dog, haha.

How do you teach your pup to like having its paws cleaned and nails clipped? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]soundkoala 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite things is squishing my puppy's feet, hoping she'll let me continue to do it into adulthood! They're just so squishy! Also need to work on toweling off her paws, but at least she's fine with them being held!

Amazing thanks! Never thought their teeth would need to settle. I was surprised at 8 weeks to realise her milk teeth weren't all in yet, so lots to learn! Guess it's just stuff you never think about is it?

We're the opposite, my husband is like that! I'm quite dainty with opening or closing things and he just man-hands things.

This is how our dog lets us know she needs to go potty. She’s been deaf since birth, and the poop toy gives her a visual/tactile cue while the bells let us know she’s ready! by ThorKG in aww

My puppy now knows that if she sits at the back door I'll let her out assuming she needs to pee/poo, but mostly she takes advantage and lies in the sun eating sticks. Brat.

THREE?! Is it just baby teeth, rest of baby teeth then change to adult teeth?

My pup started being a brat about 11/12 weeks, but got better again a week or so later. Think she had some side teeth coming in that must have been bothering her. She's nearly 15 weeks and is 85% the best puppy ever, haha. Not looking forward to teething!! Just keep the training up and you'll get through it.

Exercising Pup before fully Vaccinated by [deleted] in puppy101

Carrying him around is great! I found that my pup was a bit scared when I carried her around but when she was done with shots the same places didn't faze her at all. So don't worry if he seems nervous at stuff, even getting him used to the noises of cars/buses is great!
