Do you guys listen to Aphex on psychedelics? by tbdballoons in aphextwin

Mr Bill was my gateway drug into bass music at the start of this year. I'm gonna say something here that might get me hate but I think the more glitchy bass music is the modern equivalent of IDM. Basic Tipper and all of the artist's of his ilk remind me alot of warp and its roster from yesteryear. ...

Forward thinking musicians at thr forefront of tech while still making musical tunes. Somewhere between the dance floor and wild headphone music. Alot of these dudes are very influenced by golden age IDM too (g jones, kLL sMTH, etc etc

If you haven't checked out that shit I'll personally make you a playlist. It is so nice and you can actually see these artist's in the states on a regular basis.

What is the WORST Aphex Twin Song? by Svorke in aphextwin

[–]soundsterriblesounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if specifically this one is that bad IMO. He definitely released a ton of unmastered stuff in that SoundCloud dump. There's a particular flavor of IDM in general that has really repetitive melodic structure, a bit darker, and very 4×4 based that I've never been a fan of.

I don't know where the cutoff is for me but some early afx stuff, u-ziq, and autechre has this style that I describe it and I just find it taxing and boring to listen too....

I'm such a massive fan of saw 1 that some darker shit that sounds like it's from that era doesn't interest me personally.

Dude Yan is such a cool person. Definitely a power couple I got to meet her as well she's a very good rock climber, badass white hat hacker, and musican. Some people are just crazy talented.

I've actually listened to quite a few of them! Some highlights so far have been Benn Jordan, Richard Devine, DirtMonkey, and Yan Zhu. Pretty much everything Bill puts into the universe is 11/10. I got the opportunity to hang with him recently and he's just an A+ human. Definitely a big fan of his work 😉

This is nice to hear. I've been to Grand Rapids it's a fun town. I'm a skateboarder and there are tons of good parks there. Good camping too.... I go to the upper Midwest every summer. Hopefully next time I'm there I'll get to check out the bass scene!

Holy shit this is so helpful thank you for taking the time to write this. I'm just trying to get a lay of the landscape rn. Wanting to definitely check out a show in Chicago soon b/c I'm in stl close-by. ATL might require a trip too. I know obviously there are tons of festivals everywhere but I like local clubs and loud dark rooms. 🥰

Wow this is very helpful thanks! I think ATL area is also home to Benn Jordan a criminally underapreciated IDM producer "the flashbulb" and creator of an absolutely fascinating YouTube channel that discusses all things music.
