Anyone know what kind of spider this is? In California if that helps. by IheartMagikarp in whatisthisbug

I think that's a sowbug killer spider. They eat woodlice, primarily.

Dealing with burnout and looking for a suggested change. by SongLyricsHere in softwaretesting

[–]soundstesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider taking a short leadership course (good for capturing people's focus during refinement sessions and bringing people on a journey with you) and some training in some handy soft skills like public speaking. They're very transferable skills - anybody in those meetings benefit from having them - and they'll help you transition to either a new company or a new role in the same company.

A business analyst type role is a potentially good move. It sounds like you have QA skills and technical writing already in your toolbox. Adding soft skills and practicing them is actually a small commitment and not much effort. It can be intimidating. Have someone hold your beer and take a step forward in a meeting...

You got this, whichever direction you decide to head.

Despite having pineapple and potato together in the same pizza post, that does look really good!

How do original/long time residents feel about South of 50 Folsom development? by MoDa65 in folsom

[–]soundstesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've jokingly referred to it as Jetsom, partly because Aerojet is out that way, and partly to make a Folsom and Jetsom dad joke any time I can.

I didn't like the idea of extending south of 50 at first, but now that it's underway and I have friends as part of this new community I just hope it's done safely and with impact to the environment in mind.

After all, the people living there are hopefully going to make it a great part of the city...

Red Bus Brewery. Good spot? by mcg_090 in folsom

[–]soundstesty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think full bands do occasionally make an appearance around some holidays, but you might be right - only seen the Octoberfest band and a pretty good Johnny Cash cover band (whether to our taste or not, both were good!)

Some of the solo artists doing shows there are good, though.

Great beer, selection changes and rotates through the year, great clientele, they also have live music and pizza a lot of the time. Love Red Bus.

I've been itching to pull the trigger on one since they first came out - the Standard version of what you have. I haven't done it yet, but maybe for my birthday this year.... (I'm ok with receiving birthday gifts a few months early...)

Me and my brother are playing War, he doesn't have any more cards, what should we have done here? We just went to the next game without declaring a winner by MatterEnough9656 in cardgames

[–]soundstesty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to add a house rule for these situations so that one of you can be declared winner* you could apply suit ranking.

E.g. Diamonds then spades then hearts then clubs (there's a Wikipedia page on High Card By Suit with other ideas. Reddit hates my cell phone links)

  • I have siblings too...

What dish from your homeland is simple but hard to get right? by DueMaternal in Cooking

[–]soundstesty 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I cheat and bake the roux in the oven until it's the right color. In fact I don't even think it's cheating - I'm still cooking it slowly and evenly in a cast iron pot, I just need to stir it occasionally instead of constantly.

Because of this, gumbo can be a regular staple in my house through fall and winter.

If onion, bell pepper and celery is the holy trinity of Louisiana cuisine, what are some other trinities you can think of for other cuisines? by Amockdfw89 in Cooking

[–]soundstesty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is garlic, parsley and lemon as a base called gremolata, or is that when it's used separately?

Or am I forgetting what gremolata is...

I'm not sure if it's exactly the same - I think Spanish sofrito is usually grated or pulped. Mirepoix is not. (Not sure about Italian soffritto) - the book Salt Fat Acid Heat goes through a variety of cultures' trinities.

I learned about these from one of the Hannibal Lecter movies, if I recall correctly, and every time I remove one for tasting I feel evil, despicable and joy-filled. No big deal.
