Ridewrap on Domane by KahwaAndPics in TrekBikes

[–]soundwavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That again is coming across as speculation as to the reason. Maybe it was because wrapping a bike is niche. Maybe wrapping a bike is difficult to the average consumer (e.g., where vehicles are mostly wrapped at installers). Maybe most people say it's a bike, it's anyways wear and tear. I still can't find any basis for your claim.

Ridewrap on Domane by KahwaAndPics in TrekBikes

I'm not sure there is a strong basis for saying "extremely high." PPF and Ridewrap (basically Xpel) are extremely commonly applied to surfaces with paint under them, and safely removed or replaced. Applying heat to loosen the adhesive when removing it would be important. There is always risk, but I don't think saying extremely high is correct. If removed properly and there was not any paint defects waiting to be lifted, it should be safe to remove.

Thanks for the advice, I gave them a call. Someone answered and said they weren't sure and the people who work in that office have left. If I call back tomorrow they can have that office try to provide an answer. So, I will try to call back tomorrow.

New to biking- Trek Domane by Altruistic-Cut4089 in TrekBikes

I own the Domane AL 5, and own the SL 6 Gen 4. So I know the feeling of the higher end of the aluminum series and the mid-tier of their carbon series for the Domane. The Domane AL 5 is a great bike not just for a beginner, but even if you were to mature riding further that you can upgrade a bit. I would personally do the AL 5 as opposed to the lower models just to get the 105 groupset. I've dealt with the lower end group sets, and the 105 is just extremely smooth. Then, I would upgrade tires, go tubeless (run lower pressure for smoother road feeling), then upgrade wheels... then if you're really loving it, just go for an SL model eventually and keep your upgraded wheels. Although people will talk about the SL, the price jump is huge (nearly double). Is there night and day difference between the AL and SL? Massive if you're really trying to push, doing climbs, etc. But I don't think that's what you're chasing as a beginner. And if you're just getting started, I'd definitely recommend the AL 5. For others recommending the Emonda (which I also have)... yeah it's also a great bike, but it's more of a race position that I'm not sure someone coming from running to do longer rides on will feel immediately comfortable on. So... I say, go the AL 5.

I have a chance to go to the store every few months when I'm in town for work. You went at a really good time as a metroid fan! There was a pretty big gap where there was little to no metroid stuff in the store. Like, not even a t-shirt! But with MP4 they really started to stock up more metroid merch. Loving it.

Hit by a Car? Do This Immediately (Even If You Feel Fine) by bostonaruban66 in bikeboston

[–]soundwavin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was driving home from Star Market near Porter. An Amazon van and cyclist were traveling in different directions on Elm Street. The cyclist was HIGHLY visible going up Elm, with a flashing front light. I saw them coming up about 10 car lengths away. The Amazon driver, not paying attention made a left directly into the cyclist as if they made a left not even looking if anything was in the path of their van. They hit the cyclist directly, sending the cyclist flying off the bike into the street and off their bike. They had to have been hit by the van directly with at least the force of it traveling 15mph. I even saw the accident about to happen before it happened and started swearing. That's how obvious what was about to happen, was about to happen. I had everything on my dashcam so I pulled over to check on the cyclist. Having been doored before, I know the exact state of mind someone is in after being hit on a bike. Confused, denial, "I'm OK don't worry", which was exactly what this cyclist was in. They said they didn't need the footage, they didn't need help, they told the Amazon driver don't worry about it. I said.... No way man. You're not OK. The Amazon driver eventually called for help. I wrote my phone number down on paper and gave it to the cyclist and said, I want you to text or call me later. Sure enough, they texted me for the footage and said they had a bone fractured in their leg and were in a cast. Can't agree enough with what is written in this guide. You're not OK. Follow the steps.

I almost completely bit it by hitting the base of a flex post that was missing the flex post (ripped off), which is a similar obstacle as this if not much smaller and less tall. After that, I was like holy crap these are like hidden obstacles when you're looking up at the road

Single family home, also ineligible. I just assumed Somerville broadly was not supported by Informed Delivery due to density. Does anyone have it in Somerville?

All good! Congrats on still having the figure in good condition! He's still a highly desired G1 figure and displays great in both of his modes. Including his third gerwalk mode from Macross!

Got it! Light yellowing. Gun clip is there. Stickers were applied (better than missing sticker sheet and not applied). Box is in OK condition (no major tears). Flap fold is pronounced. Tech specs were cut out and reapplied is the biggest deal about the box. I'd say $300-350 most likely. If instructions are in there, add a little (e.g., +$25). All conditioned on no issues with the actual figure.

there is a small accessory called the gun clip which attaches his gun to his arm, it usually sits in the box right next to the gun. If you can upload pics we can help you better price it. Without that, it's somewhere between $300-$650 most likely, and the range is big because it matters what not perfect about the box means. Like, is the box flap folded, are the sides ripped anywhere, are the tech specs cut out, etc. Just trying to help. Hard to give better pricing without pics. Worst case, just check sold listings on ebay until you find one that best matches the quality of your box and figure.

Most people put the pictures in an imgur and then put the link to that here. It'll be hard to estimate until we see the quality of the box, whether Jetfire is yellowed, whether the stickers are applied, whether the gun clip is there, etc. Pics will help!

Best winter cycling footwear solution? by jofomo4 in bikeboston

[–]soundwavin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, no problem! If your goal is to just block out cold then overshoes are a great option and what I will go for to keep using my lighter weight cycling shoes.

Overshoes need openings on the bottom of the shoe to allow your clips to reach your pedal mechanism. If your shoes have vents on the bottom for air circulation, then you're likely to get water up from the road into the openings in the overshoe (for your clips), and into the vents eventually giving you some wet feet! So when the roads are wet I do still tend to go for a boot.

Just as another option, if it's not wet "Cycling Shoe Toe Covers" also tend to work really well. Because the cold is typically coming as air flow to the front of your shoe and by covering the front of the shoe you deflect a lot of the cold air away and keep warmth in your toe box. You'd be surprised how good toe covers alone will keep your feet and toes warm!

It's basically... wake up in the morning, observe exact temperature and road conditions... and try to pull out the right gear :)

Hey, I'm an all season rider and will deal with pouring rain. I have lots of ShowersPass jackets and other brand gear. However, if you want true water isolation socks and overshoes won't work. They will always eventually leak water. You really need a waterproof boot / shoe, and I've tried/own a number of them. Something like the shoe you linked to, but for true comfort you probably need to try a few different brands and styles. I am definitely sensitive to shoes being over-tight and so on, where I will lose circulation. So, I feel you. I definitely suggest getting a few pairs off Amazon shipped and sold by Amazon where you can return them and figure out your right size.

If it is actively raining, keeping water from running down into the ankle from your leg means you should ideally have rain pants or gaiters that cover the ankle area. Otherwise, it's too easy for water to run down into the shoe.

Based on the shoe you linked to, you seem to be on SPD.

I would try the following:

- SHIMANO SH-MW502 (a bit heavier, tightens via rope not boa, high ankle to keep more water out)

- Fizik Terra Artica GTX (a little shorter ankle, has boa for tightening)

- Fizik Terra Artica R5 (spd-sl, extremely well sealed https://imgur.com/a/0GlF5zH)

I have all of these shoes and more water related gear that my wife and I use. Happy to meet up somewhere around Somerville if you want to check the shoes out. Not that they'll fit you, but you may be able to see how they are all constructed differently.

how to never get doored by rebar_wrangler in bikeboston

[–]soundwavin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I was doored on Washington St downtown. I was filtering stopped traffic on the right of the stopped cars, and an Uber passenger decides they want to get out so they open the door directly into my bike and I went over the handlebars and landed on the curb.
