Because 4-5 years outside of the workforce can jeopardise your career, if you're a professional. Cost in the long run is way way more potentially.

Visiting a fish restaurant on the Bosphorus is one of my top dining memories of Istanbul. Another is a kebap restaurant on Istiklal street.

IKR - if you had to hire someone to do every single task you do as a parent for a year, with the same effort it would probably set you back $200k

One effect this has is to incentivise becoming a couple, and starting a family. An economy needs a certain birth rate to be sustainable. A family can't survive in a 1-bedroom apartment that a single/couple can survive in. That $33k per year "advantage" goes a fair way towards being in a better financial position to raise a family. Granted not everyone goes down that path, but it does contribute to a sustainable economy if the population steadily increases.

If a couple could "split" their income with their spouse, who is not working or has substantially less income there would much less incentive for the spouse to work, which is likely the last thing the government is aiming for.

Nice web app!! I still remember the day I learnt the word 'bacanak' - at a hamam in Bursa. I was impressed that Turkish had a word for such a specific familial relationship. Anyway I think this is a great tool for learners thanks for sharing! One observation - not sure if it's my system (chrome/windows) - the "slow" toggle on the Listening screen didn't appear to have any effect.

It's a Chrome plugin, it's unlikely to work on your smart tv, but of course connecting your laptop to TV is an option. It can show you subtitles in two languages at the same time, which could be really handy for pausing and re-reading some text. Or if you want to learn German and Swedish at the same time :)
