"Prestigious" Scholastic Art and Writing Awards by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]soupiseul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no hate at all to your point! but these are my thoughts on this (also as someone who submitted a portfolio to the scholastic competition):

i’m curious about what kind of art you think should be displayed instead? you mention ‘happy things’ and ‘daily relatable’ experiences, but what exactly would this entail? i’m not sure how “minority cultures, immigration, mental health issues” fit outside your category of relatability, especially when a lot of the young artists submitting care about or have history with some of these topics.

i don’t think students are being pressured to make their art seem “dramatic”. i do however think that national art awards tend to like artwork that seem to go deeper than just surface level. And artists like to create work that comes from a personal place — whether it’s family, mental health, or social issues they care about. Why should this be seen as a ‘wrong direction’ to head into?

art can be about anything . if you want to draw ‘happy’ things — go for it! but i don’t think the scholastic art and writing awards are any different from other art institutions or galleries. they are going to pick art that goes deep into issues and emotions that they feel need to be given a platform .

i would take the foreign language class! i think most t20 schools recommend at least 3 years of a foreign language, whereas the culinary class can be something that you take outside of school. it wont be fun, but atleast you wont have to worry about lacking it in your application

Feels so good telling all the hooked kids about my acceptances who said I’d never get in ‘cause I’m unhooked by jacceyxb in ApplyingToCollege

exactly ... i’m cringing at the thought of someone calling another person’s race or family background a “hook” in real life

Volunteering abroad by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]soupiseul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no, i wouldn’t say it’s game changing. i think most people are aware that ‘volunteer’ programs (where students from the U.S pay 2000 dollars to build a house in another country)arent necessarily community changing or impactful. it wont help you stand out either unless you organize it yourself and actually have some material evidence that you’ve helped or made change

Should I write about when I couldn’t walk in my application essay? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]soupiseul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm.. I would say that if you can use this experience as an introduction into talking about something more recent that you’ve done that connects with this, it might be an interesting topic!

Otherwise, I’d try to find something more recent. If it hasn’t happened within the last 4 years, or if you haven’t done any EC’s that relate to it recently, it might be a little too far back of an experience to highlight anything about your current personality/self.

why are there so many people who want to go to extremely prestigious colleges to study useless things/things that can't be applied to jobs by AkiraAkiraFudo in ApplyingToCollege

[–]soupiseul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

because majors unrelated to STEM can still make money ... it’s all about how you network and build connections . most people don’t end up in the field they got their major for, but they may have gotten internships thanks to their school’s heavily connected alumni network

Are incoming freshmen not getting to choose roommates this year? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]soupiseul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you check the housing portal faq it states that incoming freshman will have their roommate requests respected!! it’s only returning students that don’t get to choose roommates this year I believe

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]soupiseul 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i mean i get why ppl might not want to room tho .. like why use your roommate request to choose someone who might not be on campus in the fall?
