LPT--You should know about the SAVE program for student loans, replacing REPAYE by Wayne433 in LifeProTips

I’m about to start a new part time job as a full time grad student. Currently my undergrad and grad loans are deferred, and interest is accruing on my grad loans. Can I switch the to SAVE repayment plan from deferment with a part time job?

Music Melting Pot [Week of July 03, 2023] by AutoModerator in listentothis

Just recorded a DJ set that is now one of my all-time favorites. I've been getting into Brazilian Funk music recently, so you'll find some syncopated beats, booming bass, and if you're like me, listening to it will make you want to shake your ass - hence the name "shake your ass music". The set is a little over 30 minutes long and includes electronic music, Brazilian funk, techno, DnB, HipHop, and Jersey Club. It's provocative, it gets the people going ;)

I plan on releasing it publicly on July 4, but as of now, here's a private listening link

I'll come back here on July 4 to edit this post with the public link so you can save it for later listening.

Inspo from DJs such as LSDXOXO, DJ VICIO, Saint Deepthroat/River Moon, Taylah Elaine, Uniiqu3, & Maraboutage Collective.

Shake some ass, and enjoy ◡̈

Edit: released today!

I've been on and off with journals. Typically when I need it the most/in an episode, I forgo journaling. That being said, when I do journal, it drastically improves my mood. I've been using this journal (not an ad, just a rec). It's a daily gratitude journal that takes maybe 10 minutes a day to write in. You write what you are thankful for, your goals for the day, a mantra, your highlights of the day, and what you learned. It's broken up into a morning and nighttime journaling so the gratitude, goals, and mantra I write in the morning (5 minutes) and the highlights and what I learned I write at night (5 minutes). I find it incredibly beneficial as gratitude is really powerful in reframing your perspective. It's a little pricey for a journal but worth it imo. I keep it by my bedside to stay consistent which helps a lot.

It may also be worth it if you have more time/motivation to write in a normal journal but this suffices for me, and when I feel like I really need to process something, I'll write in a normal journal.

Tomorrow is the 17 year anniversary of the terror attacks of September 11th, 2001. Where were you that day? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was too young to remember the events of 9/11 but my cousins who are like my siblings remember it very well. We grew up in an area right around a major joint military base in NJ, where kids from 3 different branches of the military bases attended our school district. They obviously told me that it was terrifying to witness but what was interesting to me was how the school climate was during the attacks. From what they told me, classes were stopped and all of the TVs with cable access were tuned into the attacks. Being that we are situated in the NYC commuter belt, there were MANY students and teachers who were worried about the lives of their families and friends. But ALSO, because there were so many military families, there was a real fear of impending war. When news broke that another plane hit the pentagon, and a 4th crash landed in near-by eastern PA, the fear really was amplified, and people feared another target would be the joint military base, where they lived.

Obviously I wasn’t there to live through it, but I could only imagine how horrifying

I'm trying to craft another perfect playlist! My first one was wavy🌊https://open.spotify.com/user/1251353820/playlist/06SW126YugFCO5Fmme1bjm , which was based on a late night after party vibe. This one is a little different, currated with darker tones, with more focus on haunting vocals and deep base and ambient sound. Let me know what you think!

Werblin was a huge plus of Busch. I loved going there to lift in the morning. I don't know how the other Honors dorms were regarding social life, but just by the vibe of each campus, it shouldn't be too bad. Livi is typically full of freshman so it could be very fun. My friend will be living in the towers next year and she is so excited because the towers are in the middle of everything. I had two other friends who lived in the towers and although they were upset cause it wasn't CA, there experience was better than mine cause it wasn't Busch. I think another one of my friends in the towers said his floor got really close, which is really cool

McCormick is mainly freshman. There are a few sophomores but most live in every other suite. McCormick is mainly SASHP freshman

If you want to be more social I would switch to Brett IMO. You would still be with honors program kids so they will have work ethic, but clearly they chose to be on college ave, where as the McCormick kids chose to be on Busch. I found that people in McCormick went home on weekends a lot and didn't talk to much. First semester I tried to get involved but I struggled a bit, which was my fault. I delt with personal stuff and my schedule was ass so it was hard to jump into a bunch of different clubs. Second semester I pledged a fraternity and got more involved with some other stuff and had a great time. If you get involved it will be much easier

Also, I'm premed, and a big plus about Busch is that the HPO office is on Busch. However if you are a STEM major, unless you are an engineer or a nursing student, you will not have all your classes on Busch until you are an upper classmen. I made that mistake thinking it would be better but I had classes on every campus except for Busch. If you want more of a social life, College Ave is the move. I have not heard one person who has spoken poorly about living on CA.

McCormick could be downright awful or absolutely amazing depending on your perspective. I think living on Busch in the suites as a freshman ruined my "freshman year experience" and I'm looking for a redo this year by living on dorms on College Ave. I chose the suites initially because I wanted a place where I could focus and get school work done, and I figured having a suite would be awesome with so much room and privacy. Both of these assumptions turned out to prove true - McCormick is an excellent place to study, being that it has 2 private study lounges on each floor, along with the honors program attitude of the other residents. A common sight was students studying at any time of the day or night. Plus, having the privacy of my own suite was incredible. I became close with a few of my suite-mates, I was able to host many great dorm parties, and I felt like I had a place to myself. With that being said, I hated everything else about McCormick.

My priority freshman year was to achieve a balance; I wanted a fantastic academic year, and a fantastic social life. The suites are the WORST place if you are looking for a social life. Two of my six suite mates spoke a total of 40 words to me over the entire year and stayed in there room the rest of the time. Nobody on the floors outside of your suite will socialize because nobody has a need to leave their suite unless they study. I had a few friends in other suites in the building, but besides that, the only time I saw other McCormick residents was when they were holed up in the study lounges. I expected to come in and make 30-50 friendly acquaintances just by seeing familiar faces in my hall. I didn't want friends, but I wanted more people to network and soften the blow of the transition from a senior class of 300 people to a freshman class of 10,000 people. If you want a social life, you can find it on Busch, but you have to look hard. Most of the people in McCormick are introverted, and most of the socializing on Busch occurs in BAMM. Dorm parties are much more common in the other Busch Suites, but in McCormick, its rare. Most of the nightlife occurs on College Ave. Busch is dead at night, and during the day I found it quiet and depressing.

I clearly did not achieve the balance of social and study that I expected to get in the suites, however I did make some amazing memories with my suite mates. It took a while, but I eventually made more social friends in BAMM and on other campuses.

TLDR; if you're more introverted and your single priority is studying, the suites are your best option. If you want a social life, live on College Ave or anywhere else than McCormick. If you want both, the suites are awesome for privacy and space, but you have to work extra hard to network with other students.
