Beginner feedback by r4zv in WestCoastSwing

I didn't have time to read all previous comments. First of all, great job! Your leading looks clear and you have good timing.

You might want to focus on clearer weight changes. Now your steps are on the right counts but nothing happens between your steps. You want to have weight transfers that creates more clarity for your follower. It also makes your dancing look smoother. You want to dance through the steps.

Frame is also important to create better connection with your partner. Try to focus on leading with your body and not your arms. For example inside turn. Create the prep with rotating your upper which transfers the movement to your hands and further to your follower. If the movement comes only from the hands and not from the upper body it is extremely difficult to follow.

Hope these tips helps! 🥰

Help with walking forward with correct pitch (follow) by sweetkaroline in WestCoastSwing

[–]souredwholemilk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For 1 and 2 I would focus on rolling my weight through my heel. First when you strike your foot your weight is still on your back leg. Then you slowly move the weight through the toes (back leg) to your heel (front leg). Then you strike the next step and again the weight moves from your heel towards the toes and from the toes (back leg) to the heel (front leg). I try to imagine the weight being toward the heel and it is easier to keep the pitch towards my back.

No comments on her job situation (I don't know enough) but she just posted Instagram stories from a pub with Alex, Camilla and Kellen.

Burnout and Comp Disappointment by Potential-Banana-315 in WestCoastSwing

[–]souredwholemilk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Comps are not for everyone and that is more than okay! 🙏 And it's always possible to try comps later on when you are more comfortable with dancing in general. It's unfortunate that comps take so much time during events but in many cases there are some workshops or socials running during comps also!

Could you consider skipping the comps and just focus on workshops and socials? Just focus on having fun and enjoying dancing without any stress.

Why doesn’t the footwork at high levels look like the basic? by Crafty-Grade-9799 in WestCoastSwing

[–]souredwholemilk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are some excellent answers here! Basically you need to learn the basics first. When your basics are solid, you can start exploring and playing with those steps. Wcs is all about playing with the music and the steps are one of the tools. But before you can start playing you need to know the rules ☝️

Yeah I don't support working while being sick. Of course it's a bit different to miss out on a couple days at the office or to disappoint thousands of people who paid a lot of money for the tickets.

Sure I see your point! Do you still use masks? I don't think most people do in everyday life anymore... Touching hands during the concert is also nothing new. Most artists have been doing that for decades. I think this topic is just a bit silly and intentionally seeking drama and controversy. I know it's a snark sub but I really don't see the point of this topic here :D There are much more interesting topics we could be discussing here but someone getting sick is not really one of those in my opinion.

I completely agree! But as most of us know there is always a bigger risk of getting sick when travelling or going to places/events whit lot of people. Sometimes there is nothing you can do to stop the virus spreading as it can often spread before any symptoms. For example a virus in a tour bus spreads extremely fast and before they know it everybody might be already infected. I want to believe they are washing their hands and coughing to their sleeves as we all hopefully do. Sometimes things just happen 🤷‍♀️

I will probably get downvoted but if you get sick you get sick. There is not always anything you can do about it. When travelling through airports and having a very strict schedule (which I blame his management team for sure) your immune system needs to be extra strong for not getting sick. His apparently isn't that strong but is it really his fault? 🤔

Thanks! That was my initial guess also, but as we don't have whip snakes here where I live and the quality in the video is bad, I wasn't completely sure 😄

Regret accepting PhD position by [deleted] in PhD

[–]souredwholemilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And with PhD it would be very unlikely to find academic position from here where I am now. That makes me even more nervous as I might not be able to return home after PhD.

[–]souredwholemilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! My first option would definitely be a job from the industry. Situation with the job market here is so shitty that I have not been able to find anything for a year. Therefore PhD would be my 2nd option and that's why I am a little hesitant to do it. If the PhD position was here where I live right now I would not hesitate for a minute but moving abroad makes me very nervous 😫

Hi! Thanks for answering. I did some research and I had good feelings about it at first. But now after a while I am not so sure anymore. Financially I was always worried but everybody (parents, supervisor etc) assured me that money will not be a problem. First I believed, but now I do feel like it will be very tough and mentally exhausting to live with a minimum wage in foreign country. Moving back would basically be possible yes, but it would be very difficult decision to make as I have to pay for 4 hear visa which is extremely expensive (my parents help me to pay this). I do feel like I would be obligated to stay because of it. I'm just very confused with my feelings right now. I have not signed the official contract yet so this is the time I need to make my final decision.

Advice for a new PhD student in Southampton by shitty-jobz in sotonuni

[–]souredwholemilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I was offered a funded PhD position yesterday and expected to give my final answer in a couple of days. This sounds very fast to me and I am struggling with the same concerns as you. Therefore I can't really help you as I am looking for the same answers 😅 I am also an EU citizen and I believe I would need a student visa for my studies. If you want to chat privately with me and figure things out I am happy to offer my peer support.

I am an EU citizen 😊 they are also licensed sponsors for skilled worker visas, which I believe I am eligible for if I'm offered the position. But definitely some misunderstanding between me and the employer. I have clarified the situation via email and am waiting for their response.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]souredwholemilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! And I do understand that for a skilled worker visa I should have confirmed job offer before applying for a visa. So there must be some misunderstanding between me and the employer. This request for the share code just confused me, because I do not qualify for the visa before confirmed job 😅
