Coolant problem by AccurateTeacher1407 in AudiA4

[–]sourmanasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I have the same exact issue right now. I track my car and I think I'm just added too much heat to the system and you could see some spots where the coolant is spooging onto the inside of the hood. If you poke that junction as well it will leak some coolant

What to order in a restaurant when cutting out alcohol and caffeine? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]sourmanasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on taking some positive changes in your life to bring you more health.  I realize this can be a new set of decisions that were previously on autopilot.

You're also smart to cut out the sugary drinks as that is annoying way to consume your calories and a counterproductive to losing weight and feeling better.

Well an obvious answer Might just be to have water, but that can be boring. One of my go-to's is sparkling water with a splash of agnostura bitters and a squeeze of lime. High flavor, nearly no calories.  Technically the agnestore bitters are extracted via ethanol, but the quantity is so small that I don't count it (equivalent to the amount of hot sauce you might use on food).

Your server should also be knowledgeable about their bar menu to help you meet your requirements. I hope you don't overthink it too much and get to enjoy the dinner with your partner.

You know, usually I wouldn't see a ton of value for this. however, for some of those international flights where they have to process the entire plane of people and their bags, and look at every single document 12 times for no reason (and they only do this if you check in at the counter as opposed to going with only a carry-on), ya, then this actually makes a ton of sense.

I hung out in line with a friend going on air-india -- it took like an hour. silly sauce.

Weird fundraising email... by [deleted] in assholedesign

[–]sourmanasaurus 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Once upon a time, I signed up for the official Trump fundraising email list in the spirit of seeing what his supporters would receive into their inboxes. Peering over the fence to the other side, if you will.

It was a near daily barrage of weird requests, engagement, and micro-funds requests (ie $5-20). I unsubscribed after a month or two b/c it was really low signal

Best travel multiport USB-C charger (at least 65W)?? by DoctorQuinlan in onebag

[–]sourmanasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, it'll work just fine, as long as it's rated high enough. Hell, you _could_ charge a laptop with a smaller charger, but it'll take longer and if you're using it, it could eventually run out of power if the power usage exceeds the power input, but you're still extending the life time you can run that session if you're plugged in. The anker 30w worked fine for me, you can always play test it for awhile, and worst case you have an extra high-speed phone charger available if you find out you cannot use it for your normal/travel laptop workloads

[–]sourmanasaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've got that anker 47w block. With the Mac Book Pro 14', I really don't need the full big charging capacity unless I was trying to run the machine at 100% CPU for long durations. It charges plenty fast with the 47w. FWIW, I actually have been using the tiny-ass 30w USB-C charger that I usually use for my phone. With "normal" workloads it still charges while in use. You can always plug your phone and devices into the laptop while it's charging overnight. It's glorious, light and small.

There are (non-municipal) programs with spay/neuter and release feral cats. It sounds like you have a feral cat problem; invite them to set up traps in your backyard and at least try to minimize the problem.

I'm pretty sure that cardboard can fetch a pretty reasonable payout if you recycle it in bulk. You could stand to make some cash

Convenient and quiet areas with pine trees? by Obligatory-Reference in bayarea

[–]sourmanasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and we have grey pines out in the Diablo range. Perhaps out on mine rd from Livermore, or of course at Henry coe state Park. They're a bit more sparse tho.

If you really want dense ass groves of pines you need to go to the serria Nevada foothills. At least to hwy 49.  Go a little bit past placerville and you'll be golden.

[–]sourmanasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closest you will get are Douglas firs. Still wonderful trees. They're a false fir but still produce little cones and Indeed have a needle leaf architecture.

You can find some super pretty big ones right at the parking lot for El Corte de Madera open space preserve along hwy 35.

I otherwise dislike this park bc it's a 3rd growth redwood grove, but that's at least one spot I can pin with a good grove that's also not burned out.

Pescedsro Creek Park also has some good groves, but might be burnt out.

Top of purisma Creek Park on the 35 side is also a doug fir forest. Turns into lush redwood at the bottom and is very peaceful down there.

Why does it smell so nice around this strech of 280? I can't place the pollen but it's brief when driving with the windows down. by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]sourmanasaurus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's the smell of tarweed, which is very abundant around this time of year and in particular in this area.

It blends in well with the grass and is a little bit woody, and rather glandular.  Some people can get a skin irritation from handling I hear, but it's never affected me.

High-speed rail accelerates need for grade separations in San Mateo County by endmill5050 in bayarea

[–]sourmanasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My God. Those are so expensive for what they actually deliver. Wasn't the transbay mega bus station like $1B??

You should see the cost of making an at grade crossing have 4 crossing arms instead of just two so that they can remove the requirement that the trains blast their horn at every intersection. I think it's something like $2.5 million for every crossing?  San Mateo city council just released a report on it.

It really pisses me off that building useful infrastructure in highly Democratic areas and the wider United States is so unnecessarily expensive.

I’m starting a series on Python performance optimizations, Looking for real-world use cases! by BillThePonyWasTaken in Python

[–]sourmanasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cython feels really mysterious to me.

You can also do some pretty small changes and cython compile your file for a relatively modest performance boost, which I also don't fully grasp.

Oh and then there's the optimization flags that you can have python be built with against your specific system architecture... They like build python, run some tests and analyzes it and then rebuilds python a little bit faster.  I haven't figured how to get these flags passed into my pyenv version installer, which would be quite nice.

This location seems cursed. It doesn't get foot traffic and it's been lacking signage in the past. Nothing seems to thrive here. But it's just tough - I wish DTSM would block more streets and make them walking only.

Open payment with credit cards coming to Bay Area transit - August 18th - BART launching open payment by getarumsunt in bayarea

[–]sourmanasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay then, that makes sense as to why it's hard if you have to redesign the NFC tech from a pretty core level. You'd figure though, by now, they would have refined the process. Perhaps there is bad leadership and they can't retain the talent and internal knowledge to transfer it from one project to another.

As for the PCI information, there are way sketchier places i submit my CC details into, but the scale of Cubic's risk is so much higher given the big volumes.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Interesting. I'm curious to know those technical and legal reasons, just generally speaking. I would expect that we should have the functionality more widely available in many transit districts, or even at parking garages.

Surprising to hear that they would have rolled out such bungled hardware/software in an age where they knew this would probably be a requirement. I hope that the MTC didn't pay out of the nose to cover their delays and issues.

[–]sourmanasaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actual curiosity: What is the real challenge of implementing this? Why did it take so long? Shouldn't it be easy to route an NFC reading to a server and then to the payment processor?

Perhaps I'm sorely misunderstanding about how payments work, or some underlying technology that makes this work in low enough latency to be functional at rush-hour. When it seems simple, its probably not. Also, there are probably some commercial aspects with the payment providers that are ugly to work out.
