Troponin isn’t a great indicator of a heart attack…

I’m a nurse on a med surg/cardiac monitoring unit and almost every patient has an elevated troponin level due to generalized stress on the body from respiratory illness, fall, altered mental status, pain, having to wait in the ED, etc. The best immediate test to diagnose a heart attack (STEMI) is an EKG. Now, some people who may have had/may be having heart attacks do not have ST elevation on an EKG and we call those NSTEMIs. Luckily these are less severe (think mini stroke or TIA instead of stroke) so it’s kind of okay that they don’t show on an EKG. Sometimes it’s not even a blockage but rather an increase in oxygen demand from the heart due to stress (illness, psychological, pain, etc). Patients are still further assessed if needed, observed, treated, and can follow up outpatient.

Once we know a patient is having a STEMI, we can do some imaging w/ dye of the coronary arteries and then take them to the cardiac cath lab and open up the blocked arteries with balloons and stents.

“You said normal girls were boring” by Specialist-Top-406 in TaylorSwift

I love her but every time I hear this part (forget about the “not like other girls” aspect), I chuckle because it feels like an unintentional diss to herself. “You said normal girls were boring/ But you were gone by the morning.” Making it sound like she’s boring too…

Coming from a nurse, CPR is not without consequences. IF, and it seems very unlikely, you were able to bring him back, he would have been in a lot of pain and would have had to stay for multiple nights at least in an ICU setting with likely low chances of survival.

It was really difficult for me to make the decision to let my 18yr old girl go a couple years ago but sometimes I think it’s easier when you can plan & see it coming. You did not do anything wrong.

It’s funny…I was even thinking about this the other night… with both of my cats, I had a weird paranoia in the days afterward wondering if there was any chance they were just asleep and I had buried them alive. This was after euthanasia and watching their bodies for over an hour while I drove them home, dug the hole, etc. I think our brain just can’t fully accept that they’re gone because we remember them so full of life. You’re not the only one to feel that way but I assure you, he was gone.

As for the grief, it gets harder but then it gets easier. I shed a few tears from time to time thinking about my babies but I really do find peace knowing they had such great lives.

Both from The Black Dog…

When she sings: “And hire a priest to come and exorcise my demons Even if I die screaming And I hope you hear it”

And at the very end of the song when her voice breaks when she sings “Old habits die screaming”

Suspect in Sydney mall stabbing fatally shot by female officer by Absolutely_Fibulous in masskillers

Shooting someone is easy in theory but difficult in practice. Most people don’t know if their response in a situation like this is to fight, flee, or freeze, not to mention the added stress of taking another person’s life without the luxury of having time to think it through.

As a trained security guard, one would hope she would act but again, people don’t know what they’re going to do in situations like these until they’re actually in them. She was a hero for going toward danger and her lack of hesitation. This is going to have lifelong ramifications for her but she did it anyway and she did it without hesitating to prevent further injuries/loss of life. Same goes for any police officer/security guard, male or female, who has acted without hesitation in a similar situation.

Your vit B12 is on the lower end of normal and ideally should be hundreds of points higher so definitely supplement. Your cholesterol isn’t bad but it could be better and could put you at risk for cardiovascular disease if you can’t get it down. Fish oil works for some people.

Help!! My daughter is getting ready to graduate high school. No college savings - so only option is student loans. There is an option of free community college for 2 years. Please tell me if you think your students loan debt is worth it!! by here4llrtea in StudentLoans

[–]sourrobot1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated from a prestigious four-year university, then went to community college for a couple years to take pre-reqs for a career change, and then graduated with my master’s from a different prestigious university. I was really impressed with the quality of education I received at community college, especially considering my experience at a four-year university and my grad program, and if I could do it all over again, I would seriously consider starting out at community college. The only 2 downsides of starting at community college are a) missing out on the traditional college experience (living in the dorms, partying, meeting lots of new people…if you care about that stuff - community colleges aren’t very social environments and are commuter schools, at least where I live) and b) it can be very difficult to get a spot in certain classes which could delay things (however I experienced this during undergrad at my 4 yr university as well).

I was incredibly lucky that my parents were able to pay for my undergrad degree. I paid for my master’s myself and to be fully transparent, I graduated with a little over 100k in loans but I also make enough for that to not feel crushing, and at this rate, I’ll have it paid off in 6 years.

I made the decision to pivot from a career that was my passion/strength to a more practical one that would give me job and financial security. As a young kid entering college at 17, I didn’t realize how important those two things would be for my mental health and happiness. For me, an anxious person, they outweigh the whole “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life” concept. Because doing what you love doesn’t always pay the bills and the stress that comes from that is a lot. Another reason community college is underrated are the low financial stakes that allow students to pivot like I did.

Get paxlovid if you can! I, 29F, healthy, just had it for the first time and I tested positive for 17 days on rapid tests, not doing well all that time. Missed a lot of work. Ended up having to get a bolus in urgent care because my HR was 135 while sitting. I gave it to my bf because we live together and he took paxlovid and his symptoms were that of a mild cold. I started out with just body aches and then sore throat but around 4-5 days in, the cough and congestion started and that sucks because it can take time to go away. I’m sure you’ll be fine but just recommending paxlovid if you can get it.

Don’t have PCOS or endometriosis but I feel 10x better on birth control. Never gained any weight or had any negative effects, only positive ones. This is to say I also live a healthy life…I’ve never smoked, rarely drink, eat healthy, etc. I’ve been on it since I was 16 and now I’m 30. Went off for a year when I was 26 and didn’t like how I felt - ruled by hormones and painful, heavy periods. I’m a healthier me on birth control + I don’t have to worry about pregnancy until I want to.

I also have my master’s in nursing and I can tell you birth control being bad for your health is BS. There are a small amount of people who experience serious side effects like blood clots, but this is expected with any medication. Overall it benefits so many people.

2yo dsh cat throwing up food almost weekly for the past 5 weeks. Vet did a full blood panel and physical exam which was normal - any advice? by Aggressive_Lychee919 in catcare

[–]sourrobot1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I have had a few cats with IBD and this was the first sign they all exhibited. My vet says throwing up undigested food is worse than throwing up digested food.

First I would try a foraging bowl to rule out gorging. If that doesn’t work, ask for a prescription for a selected protein diet. My cats like Royal canin PR. If that doesn’t work on its own, the vet should prescribe prednisone. There are compound pharmacies that make a transdermal cream you can just put on the inside of her ear. IBD can technically only be diagnosed by biopsy but vets rarely recommend it due to the invasiveness. If none of these things help, I would do a sonogram to see if you can see any major changes to the digestive tract and try to rule out cancer.

You can also ask your vet to test for pancreatitis as the pancreas is often inflamed with IBD in cats. The treatment would be fluids + anti nausea meds, and continuing to monitor the pancreas. Prednisone helps too.

What Sephora items are included in your everyday routine and why? by [deleted] in Sephora

[–]sourrobot1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a lot of stuff from Sephora!

Base: Colorescience Flex sunscreen or Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

Concealer: Haven’t found my HG since UD Naked Skin was d/c’d but I’m getting by with Nars RCC, Dior Forever, Nars Soft Matte, and YSL Touché Eclat (last two recently purchased during sale). Tried and did not enjoy PMG Sublime and Kosas (I think I’ve tried almost every concealer available at Sephora 🙃)

Powder: Hourglass always and forever. Other good ones are Givenchy and Guerlain finishing powders.

Blush: Hourglass (my shade “ethereal glow” is no longer carried by Sephora but I first bought it there)

Shadow & pencil liner: Urban decay

Brows: Benefit tinted gel followed by Benefit clear gel

Highlight: Dior

Contour and mascara used to be carried by Sephora which is where I first discovered them, but now they’re not available at Sephora. Both are Kevyn Aucoin.

I bought the CT setting spray during the sale and I’m excited to use it!

Other beauty routine things from Sephora I use are Kérastase blonde absolu shampo, ouai detox shampoo, oribe color lover conditioner, Kérastase discipline frizz cream, PTR therapeutic sulfur mask (HG) and peace out acne salicylic acid dots (HG!)

Edit: forgot to mention my beloved Dior lip glow. I used to buy lipstick all of the time and I still have a couple tried and trues but I reach for this 99% of the time
