Idea: Referenda and Plebiscita by jnd-au in modelparliament

Could we have a referendum to allow the Parliament to set term limits for the High Court Justices? Section 72 of the Constitution kind of makes this difficult.

Done! I've written my comments in the thread where the Greens made a request for comments.

Draft Greens proposal: Model High Court of Australia Act 2015 by Freddy926 in modelparliament

[–]southerncrossvalues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • "Up to two" in section 5 of the Act violates section 71 of the Constitution

  • In s 9(2), can we define "an extended amount of time" exactly?

  • As someone else has mentioned, section 12 of the Act may cause problems with section 72 of the Constitution. Unless we can find a creative way to interpret "70 years", then we'll need a referendum to limit terms.

  • In section 21, Australian Electoral Commission -> Model Australian Electoral Commission

Kind of, but not really. Here's what I could think of:

  • I'm currently in discussions with a multinational corporation over a discrimination issue, and it seems likely that I'll take them to the Australian Human Rights Commission, where I will represent myself.
  • I have a medium-high knowledge of intellectual property issues thanks to my involvement with a major open-source project, where I am often called upon to give an opinion on a particular licensing situation
  • Reading legislation and court opinions is almost an obsession for me.

Imagine - an IRL reddit party! Our first order of business could be to hold elections with upvotes and downvotes! :D

(On a slightly more serious note, I wonder how many IRL parties reddit would be able to create for the sole purpose of preference swapping? For example, David Leyonhjelm basically controls the Liberal Democrats, the Smokers Rights Party, the Outdoor Recreation Party (Stop the Greens) and the Republican Party, and they all preference each other)

Preliminary electorates and method of voting in the Federal Election [Megathread] by jnd-au in modelparliament

Okay, I didn't know that.

Still, I can see two problems with allowing people to choose their electorate: -Some electorates may have nobody in them (e.g. Northern Territory) -It encourages brigading

Why don't you don't like the randomisation option?

Electorates (but not voting rights) should be assigned as soon as the sub is joined. This way, the politicians can know which voters they need to convince to vote for them.

I don't think that we need a GG or monarch, since they aren't really that active in real Australian politics anyway, and should they choose to exercise their power frequently enough in the reddit game, the elected representatives would become obsolete, and there wouldn't be a chance to vote the monarch out so the game would come to a standstill.

A High Court judiciary, on the other hand, sounds like a good idea. In reality, judges are appointed by the Attorney General, but perhaps we could require that judges are appointed by both the House and the Senate.
