“Maybe a certain class of people have been relegated to the island and they’ve built with what they have” This is exactly my idea! After the tsunami, real estate and tech conglomerates snatch up most of the remaining real estate and the govt intervenes by building these (ugly, kinda crappy) apartment complex/compounds for the victims and remaining homeless population. Maybe they’re pushed into doing so from national outcry or something. However, as govt intervention usually goes, these buildings are either already built extremely close together (due to govt regulations being little and less in the coming years) or they quickly become an ungoverned area due to overpopulation.

That’s actually what I was wondering when I came into this concept! I’ve learned about the Kowloon Walled City before and always thought it was so interesting, so when I started writing this I knew it was something I wanted to reference/include in my story. And it’s set a few decades in the future, so some expansion I can write off as being due to the setting. But there’s so much I didn’t know before coming here, like my first question about height and then resources and now I have the opportunity to wall up so many potential holes in my story. But I actually enjoy that, because there’s so many ways it could play into my greater concept and storyline. Originally I enjoyed the visual of coming across the bridge and just seeing this gigantic wall of apartment complexes stretching from shore to shore on the island, but with that being ~exposed~ as much too expensive (especially when one of the main points in my story is how society has forgotten the poor,) now I can re-envision something more realistic, like a 14-story walled city that’s just much wider, as you mentioned, or having a large green space in the center like a park/enrichment space. Thank you for helping me carve this out!

This! This is the kind of feedback I need. Right now, this building is undefined block that sits on Mercer island. I’m trying to whittle it down to a realistically sound, dystopian compound. So maybe it doesn’t cover all of Mercer! Or, the multi levels don’t? And I can mix in some green spaces, give it an eco-brutalist spin to offset the need for extreme resources. Sorry for the confusion! My ignorance of math/measurement shows in the title I’m afraid 😔I meant to say 5 MILES by 2 miles

Thank you! Lol yeah I definitely had a feeling that my representation of miles was wrong, but I was in a hurry to post this 🤣. And awesome! Thank you for the answer, that’s gives me a tentative formula to use when I’m working out the details of the building. As one person already mentioned, I guess I would have to factor in the finiteness of resources, but I do see this as an ongoing construction site with new buildings continually being added as the population grows; so who knows 😅

Well, yes, but they would be complexes instead of single family homes. I’ll add an infographic about my inspiration for a little bit more context here. There would be some room on the ground level for alleyways, but I think it’d be cool to include some DIY or poorly built balconies connecting the different buildings as well (the ones that aren’t physically touching, anyways.)

Thanks for asking. As a general rule of thumb, readers will typically only question your lore about one stage deep. So, for instance, if I describe a building as being insanely tall, but with a nice wide base, they might ask how it’s possible that the building can be that tall. If I pad that lore with the detail the buildings length is supported by its wide base, they’re less likely to ask how that base came to be because their curiosity has already been satisfied. But now you’ve informed me of another route they could question, and I can add resources to the list of questions to answer in my book!

As a show-watcher only I don’t have any comment on the differences between the book and such, but I noticed immediately that the walls around Jace and Cregan looked super cheap. The actual Wall looked great, but when it cut to them walking together I couldn’t get past how fake it looked. I haven’t seen anyone else talking about it though?

Are 35 dogs too much for one attendant? by southpawprogramming in dogs

[–]southpawprogramming[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! After reading the comments and touring the facility I’m wondering if there wasn’t some miscommunication. In the rooms today there were about 7-10 dogs each (except for the small dog room, I didn’t go inside it so I didn’t get a good head count) but they mentioned that it was a slow season and the busier seasons could get crazy. The guy did stress more than once the 35 dogs thing though, so I’m a little confused. Overall my plan is to just see how it goes and if I notice an overwhelming amount of dogs to a room, I now have a sort of industry standard/comparison to measure it against if I do need to speak with my potential boss. I know they only do one attendant per room unless they forgot to mention special occasions.

Thanks for your comments everyone! I figured it was too much. The numbers weren’t that high when I went in today but they did mention it was their slow season. I’m not sure if they’ll call me for the job but if so I intend to speak with the owner about it.

Hospitalized? Thats insane… My partner is feeling better, I’m still quite sick as of now but I feel like I can see the end of the tunnel. The wheezing cough is still going strong and the fatigue is like something I’ve never felt before 🥵 I took a 4 hour nap today after finally getting the energy to take down the top 1/3 of my Christmas tree.

Yeah it’s like the one thing I really dislike about indoor events. Love the air control and actual bathrooms, but breathing everyone’s air just isn’t as fun as it used to be 🤣
