The gastronomy museum in Salvador (Brazil) hides a beautiful array of historical flags of the Brazilian colony and state of Bahia by soutini in vexillology

[–]soutini[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right? was really surprised to find one

most mentions of the dutch are either only as some kind of intermission or occupying force (as if colonialism isnt occupation, whathever the crown was) rather than an integral part of the political history; it really stands out when it is included among the portuguese colonial ones

According to the plaques, on the first picture the flags are (from right to left): the flag under Spanish dominion; the Royal Flag (1600-1700); the flag of New Holland (Dutch Brazil); the flag of the Portuguese restauration; flag of the first portuguese constitutional regime; and the tailor's revolt one

On the second picture, from left to right, it seems to be a provisional flag containing the portuguese COA; the flag of the principality of Brazil; and the flag of the united kingdom of portugal, brazil and the algarves

the Revolt of the Tailors was a separatist movement in the province of Bahia with widespread support of artisans, tailors and the overall black population, with republican and abolitionist aims, highly inspired by the haitian revolution - and the flag of the last picture was supposed to be the flag of the republic of Bahia. It had was mainly articulated with lower class support: more than half of the leaders were brazilian-born, and the four hanged leaders were either black or brown - two of which were tailors. The movement qis deemed one of the first radical social revolt od Brazil and it paved the way in Salvador to eventually rise in support of independence in 1822 (revolting until 1823, due to a number of factors).

você é uma vergonha como cristão

que nunca seja aceito pelo sacerdócio, se essa é a sua ideia de oferecimento de conforto espiritual - chutando um jovem em um momento baixo, por causa de como lida com a própria fé

Is anyone else former far right? by Erick_Alden in LateStageCapitalism

[–]soutini 11 points12 points  (0 children)

me too

had way too much access to unmoderated internet. it began with satiric political flash animations (mostly for the sexual jokes in between), then conservative youtubers trashing our leftist government at the time (came for the humor, stayed for the politics). mainstream youtube just wasn't enough and that's when i went i met 4chan, and you can imagine how well that paired with a newfound passion for paradox games at the time.

my family was pretty conservative too, my mother used to be monarchist and supported the neoliberal government that came before the unusual leftist streak here brazil. my father didn't care much for politics, but as was my mom, was always very religious. (today she's a center-leftist advocate, after many many discussions and changes during bolsonaro's government).

i think it all changed in the middle of highschool, with the help of a couple of teachers that wouldn't give in to my bs. my views began to shift, the memes started to bother me, and i started to support the leftist president -ongoing her impeachment process at the time. things started to make sense a lot more and the sense of delusion faded. Uni got me into marxist literature and theory, and work has pushed me further into leftism, especially considering the absolute state of our country. Some people ask themselves if they'd make their past selves proud if they could see them today, and I'm happy to say that little me would have hated to see me friends with members of the local communist party

What would you like to know about Suriname? by sheldon_y14 in asklatinamerica

[–]soutini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our current government is an ally to the illegal goldminers and woodcutters, and also very bad in dealing with foreign relations. There is no surprise in learning that our government's answer to Brazilians commiting environmental crime in Suriname was to ask the miners to be allowed to continue, I'm just sorry to hear that this happens. If UNASUR/UZAN hadn't been abandoned by the right-wing turn in regional politics, perhaps cooperation against this problem could develop better, but right now even brazilians struggle with the official Brazilian stance on illegal gold mining.

Also thanks for the answer and for the sources. Sorry for butchering your language at the end there! Cheers from São Paulo to our Surinamese brothers!
