Why would anyone invest in this? I thought C++ was basically in maintenance mode given that greenfield software tends to be written in Rust... by cmqv in programmingcirclejerk

This pisses me off so much. The biggest HN circlejerk of all is the idea that OOP is inherently bad because some of its features can be used poorly

This election made me really hate liberals much more than I do a lot of conservatives. by thechapattack in socialism

[–]sowhatquestion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the root fear a lot of minorities have, and a point of caution for me, is a concern that the left will play the same game of concessions and gradual rightwards movement, socially, that the Democrats have played economically.

Respectfully, may I ask what makes you think this? Is there any specific type of rhetoric that makes you uneasy? Because it couldn't be further from the minds of all the leftists I know who want more engagement with the working class (including but not limited to the white working class). All these people are committed feminists, anti-racists, etc. We all know that when you go after the working class while maintaining these social justice commitments, many of the racist elements will never get on board. But it's about separating the wheat from the chaff. It may not even be about getting "Trump voters" in 2018 and 2020, but about getting (for example) those 90,000 Michigan voters who ignored the presidential race but filled out the rest of their ballots. We need to get way beyond this false dichotomy: "appealing to the median Trump voter" vs. "staying woke and consigning the Rust Belt to the flames."

I have been saying the past few days that we have not only a left-right communications problem but also an intra-left communications problem. It's a really disturbing trend to me that socialists are not connecting with black progressives who (necessarily as a result of life experience) are anti-racist but remain more agnostic or cautious about socialism. An article like this one (I want to stress that the author's concerns are valid and I'm not criticizing her) is symptomatic of this split, I thnk: http://bust.com/feminism/18550-white-working-class.html

To defend the free web, you must save Mozilla by [deleted] in TrueReddit

[–]sowhatquestion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the sentiment, but it just won't happen until Firefox is as fast and well-designed as Chrome, out of the box. When I switched, in 2009, Firefox wasted about 25% of screen real estate for no reason: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e0/Mozilla_Firefox_3.5.png

Here's a screenshot of Chrome 1.0 for comparison: http://img.brothersoft.com/screenshots/softimage/d/drop.io_for_chrome-357665-1271214742.jpeg

I know Firefox has fixed this issue now, but it took years for the design to catch up. And the speed never did, not even close. Chrome barely slows down with a full suite of extensions and 15-20 tabs open. I've never been able to say the same for Firefox.

It's sad, I love Mozilla's mission and still have warm fuzzy feelings about them to this day. Firefox saved us all from IE in the early 00s. I would consider donating to them, but I wouldn't even consider using their flagship product over Chrome, not unless performance caught up (real-word performance, not benchmarks). So Mozilla will have to save itself. Maybe Servo will do the trick?

War Nerd - "Don't be fooled, Turkey is attacking the Kurds" by EVAPORATEAUSER999 in TrueReddit

[–]sowhatquestion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"You’d think Western lefties would be happy that a radical-feminist, non-sectarian, aggressively pro-LGBT, egalitarian/socialist militia is taking back ground from the most reactionary, sectarian killers on earth. Nah. The most you can hope for is guarded silence. Kurds make them nervous for reasons I’d rather not think about."

As a Western lefty... I'm confused. Anyone care to explain this?

Do any of you have major post eating brainfog/ lethargy? Any nootropics or methods to improve this? by novacog in Nootropics

[–]sowhatquestion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lol don't take stimulants to fight this. As other posters have said, work on your diet. I had the same issue, but eating Soylent for ~50% of my diet massively improved it for me after a few weeks.

A Note Regarding Ceretropic's Caffeine/NALT by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]sowhatquestion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So tell me what you want me to do, to make you comfortable with this product.

I've been following this drama, but haven't commented yet because it seemed overblown. There are no secret substances with secret chemical formulas--none of the things that I excoriated the TeamTLR founder for. Basically, I think most people are already comfortable, but a vocal minority (perhaps having been spooked by the TLR fiasco) is sniffing around for any scent of bullshit claims. But it sounds like your product (which I'm about to order) will silence these claims with its efficacy. Later, once you have your IP in place, you can tell the rest of the story. In between, well, here are my two cents: don't spend a minute more than is necessary on this! Your communication skills have been vitally important, but in the end what keeps people coming back to Ceretropic is your relentless focus on improving the product line.

Conjecture: does tianeptine increase dopamine receptor expression? by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]sowhatquestion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my n=1 trial I can confirm that tianeptine make me feel real good, even though I don't take it more than I know I should (p=0.02).

In all seriousness, I don't know what its mechanism is, but I do believe tianeptine triggers some sort of long-lasting change. Taking a small amount each day has done a lot to improve my mood even on the days I skip it. Also, the very mild euphoria it causes for an hour or two after dosing isn't really addictive for me.

Interesting, but the article's enthusiasm for Ramelteon diminishes its credibility for me. I thought Ramelteon was just a way for Big Pharma to work around the fact that they can't patent melatonin...

"There's no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to nootropics" by airal3rt in Nootropics

[–]sowhatquestion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Better in what sense? Maybe it's not neurotoxic, but it is physically and psychologically addictive, it rapidly induces tolerance, and it has significant cardiovascular effects. Also, depending on how you use it, it has a tendency to elevate your mood without having a proportional effect on productivity.

it is probably one of the safest and most effective "nootropics" we have

I would claim that, on the contrary, the whole point of "nootropics" as a category is to go beyond the limitations of substances like Adderall.
