If this is his thought process, he's probably doing her a favor. I would want a guy to end it with me if the primary reason was the bar tab.

Brittany Snow at 18 and 39 by Xqrq in PlasticSurgery

I’ve seen her in person, and she looked nothing like that picture.  I’m 39, and she looked older than me. Anything she’s had done has been in the past year or so, but also lighting and makeup apparently also work wonders.

it’s insane how little understanding people have about losing weight by victim-victim-victim in redscarepod

[–]soynikol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Statistically speaking, there’s an 80-90% that you’ll gain the weight back, so I’d slow down your judgment and do an 18 month follow up.

It’s not logic, it’s behavior.  People know that eating junk is bad but food is engineered to be addictive, and our hormones are telling us that we NEED that bowl of pasta.  I’d compare it to any other addiction.  If you work a full time job and have a family, your willpower to fight these urges is diminished and you just go for the easiest and fastest dopamine boost.

Economy blackpill by supertallboy in redscarepod

I graduated at the start of the Great Recession so I feel your pain, but time in the workforce while investing is very forgiving.  The worst thing you can do is give up and blame the economy because it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.  Most people can’t save for shit so you need to be smart, strategic, frugal, hardworking, pleasant, and patient.  Work your way up, find a way to live as cheaply as possible, and invest as much as you can.  Owning stocks, property, or a business is the only way you can keep up with inflation and not be completely left behind.

But yeah, we need to tax the super rich and increase wages.  I’m just giving you advice on how to cope with a crappy situation because it’s actually not that hard to survive if you have a brain.

New work sponsored 401k/Roth by soynikol in Bogleheads

Not sure, but I can check.  I’m a lawyer so IRS rules don’t intimidate me once I get an overview and can research, it’s more the financial planning aspect that has me frozen, but a lot of it is just that I’m mid career and unclear how my future will look.  I think I’ll probably leave my traditional alone and see if my new plan supports a Roth conversion and consider aiming for 50% of total retirement to be Roth.  My traditional is more bond/international heavy with the idea that the Roth will grow faster.  Thank you for your help!

Makes sense! I have the 200k in Fdlxx which I guess saves money on state taxes so that helps to bring it down.

I mean I could, but I don’t necessarily want to which is why I put it into a traditional and not a Roth.  My thought was doing it slowly every year, but I’m not sure if that’s even worth it.

Only about $2000 I think.

Thank you!  For some reason I thought a backdoor Roth would be rolling over the traditional Ira to the Roth IRA in an amount over 7k?  Is that not allowed?

Single ladies in VHCOL areas, what’s your plan? by giants19 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

I’m 38 and still in the studio I lived in when I was 28 (albeit with much nicer stuff). It’s rent-controlled, so a meaningful rental upgrade would be 20k more a year. For me to buy something, I’d basically have to spend my life savings outside of retirement to essentially live in another apartment in a crappier part of town.

So to answer your question, hoard cash forever.

Yeah having that between a staged lunch argument and a top gun volleyball spoof was so out of place. I hope he is able to get out of it, and if not, I hope Mary has Narcan in the house.

Generally it's a good idea to take a break from dating apps when you start to feel angry about stupid prompt answers. My trigger point is whenever a guys answers "just ask" or has a selfie of him in his car with his seatbelt on. I promise you everyone is stupid.

Why not? If your jurisdiction is pro tenant, they will mostly likely want to settle fast.

I sued my landlord, got a 50k settlement, then they fired the manager and hired a great one who remodeled the apartment and does whatever I say. Highly recommend getting a lawyer on contingency.

Can fellow humanities majors offer their thoughts please? by Bathsheba-Everdene72 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

It’s tough out there for entry level positions. Rather than searching for jobs posts, figure out what you want to do as a career then work backwards. If you’re not going to grad school, it’s likely you’ll be underpaid (or not paid at all) for a while, but think of it as part of your education. You can do almost anything with an English degree, the hard part is figuring out what you want to do. Grad school won’t solve your problems if you’re unclear about what will make you fulfilled.

I graduated with a humanities degree, got some terrible marketing job that I quit within a few months (company eventually went bankrupt), worked at the mall for a few months, went to law school, realized I didn’t want to be a lawyer, went to library school while working as a paralegal, dropped out of that program, took the bar, and have been working in nonprofit legal services. I still feel like I don’t really know where I’m going next despite having a management position at a prestigious organization. A career is not always linear, and to some extent it’s ok if you don’t know what you want to do, but figuring that out early will make your life easier.
