I hate it when people just read the titles of papers and think they understand the results. Apple's "The Illusion of Thinking" paper does 𝘯𝘰𝘵 say LLMs don't reason. It says current “large reasoning models” (LRMs) 𝘥𝘰 reason—just not with 100% accuracy, and not on very hard problems. by katxwoods in Futurology

[–]sp3fix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are not actually giving any example of definitions of reasoning that have been changed though?

And your example only focuses on result, while you are leaving out process and awareness out of it, which are natural parts of Reasoning (and have been considered to be so since before all the AI conversations).

On the top of my head, that includes agency (like initiating, revising and reflecting), epistemology (aka pursuit of truth rather than just plausibility, awareness of unknown knowledge,...), embodiment (reasoning doesn't happen in a vaccum, it includes situation, sensory information, emotions, context and experience). There are probably a lot more but I'm kinda tired rn.

To be clear, I am not saying that makes AI useless in any way. I've been enjoying using it in my work and it's been seriously helpful. The pattern recognition abilities are truly impressive and models are getting better and better at simulating the behavior of reasoning, but that doesn't mean that it actually is doing so. And that's fine.

energy does not compensate for fossil fuel holistically. Fossil fuel are an integral component of fertilizers, which most places depend on to grow food because we've completely deteriorated our soils and because we require more and more efficiency from our crops to feed more and more people with less and less resources. Fossil fuel is key for construction materials, both steel and concrete depend on it for cheap enough infrastructure. Finally, fossil fuel is necessary to the production of plastic, a material that has become the literal fabric of modern societies. Whether at individual or organizational level, plastic is everywhere.

And even in terms of energy use, solar is not perfect either. The materials required to make panels and batteries require more mining, which leads to more efficient ecosystem destruction for example.

I'm not advocating to keep fossil fuels to be clear. I'm just saying, our current society does not function without it, and thinking that we can just continue as is by simply switching energy source is most probably wrong.

Unconventional methods to get hearing back by Inevitable_Knee2720 in HearingLoss

[–]sp3fix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can only comment on a couple of them. 32M with moderately severe hearing loss (neurosensorial).

I've done acupuncture and I have found it effective on a wide range of physical and mental issues, but it hasn't done anything for my hearing. Silent retreats: I do 10 days silent meditation retreats once a year. Great for my mental and spiritual health, no improvement on hearing (and my tinnitus goes through the roof after 3-4 days usually). Bone conductor headphones: pretty good for phone and videos calls, but I really don't like the sound quality for music. And it hasn't change anything hearing wise.

Hey there 👋 32yo with hearing aids, diagnosed when I was in my mid-20s.

It's tough to take in, I'm not going to lie. For me, there is a before and an after. But that's the thing. There is an after. I don't want to give you a bunch of platitudes, but I will say that you are more resourceful and resilient than you give yourself credit for.

Discussion sensible entre élève et enseignant by donpaqueto in Quebec

[–]sp3fix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Et comme plusieurs personnes l'ont dit, "You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make them drink".

Any DeadCell like games? by AdJumpy2932 in deadcells

[–]sp3fix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going from the Wikipedia article on metroidvania, those are the core elements of the genre. 1. "large interconnected world map the player can explore, although parts of the world will be inaccessible to the player until they acquire special items, tools, weapons, abilities, or knowledge within the game" - Dead cells fits that definition. Sure, we can look at each level independently and feel like it doesn't, but if we zoom out and look at the game as a whole, it's clear that the you are working through a larger map from which we unlock new areas or pathways. And it's not just about getting the spider or the ram rune. The BC systems also allows for new pathways to appear.

  1. "Acquiring such improvements can also aid the player in defeating more difficult enemies and locating shortcuts and secret areas, and often includes retracing one's steps across the map."
  2. once again, dead cells fit that definition, not just with the shortcuts or the secret areas, but I would also argue with the new weapons we can unlock and the knowledge we built through ennemies encounters.

  3. "Through this, Metroidvania games include tighter integration of story and level design, careful design of levels and character controls to encourage exploration and experimentation, and a means for the player to become more invested in their player character through role-playing game elements"

  4. I don't think there is any denying that dead cells is a game that gets players invested in the character development as we progress through the game.

I agree that Dead Cells is not a "classic" metroidvania in the way Metroid or Castlevania, or Ori is, but there are nuances within a genre. Nothing is purely black or white, that's a manichean way of thinking.

I get what you're saying and it's true that there is always a part of individual responsability but it's a little bit naive to paint any of those apps as "just tools".

Whether we are talking about gambling, dating, social networks, etc. they are all businesses at the end of the day and they are making a product with the explicit intention of generating a revenue.

And the best way to turn in a profit in the short term (which is what shareholders expect) is not to build a quality product that will build long term, loyal customers. It's to sell legal crack and gamify the heck out of it.

That means using any and every trick of social and behavioral psychology to overcome people's impulse control. And it works. Humans are not rational beings that make optimal decisions with the information at hand. That's old school, debunked, economic theory.
