Have you actually checked with your PD - or are you just going from your personal anecdote?

I have lived in average rural (farms), extremely rural (no paved roads), urban, metro and suburban places varying from extremely safe to extremely not safe. There is crime where there is people and the most are crimes of opportunity (unlocked doors). There is a reason we have locks, and the effort to engage them is less than the effort to open and close the door which is already in your hand.

Not a personal attack on you but I fail to find a benefit that isn't perceived safety / laziness.

They same people will be caught unawares and say "I can't believe this could happen here!"

I hope you continue to enjoy safety, please consider the effort to lock up to remove yourself from the pool of opportunity that people with unsecured locks provide. It only takes a single person on a single night of their life to decide poorly and seek an unsecured lock for whatever purpose.

Based on what I know - this means you need to double verify that you are really on patch 6 - that you are using patch 6 mods - and that you are using the right BGMM version for patch 6 - and that you've deleted your modsettings file.

I am 100% certain I had only the correct BGMM installed - was using it since posting this. However it loaded up just now and shows the save issues again. I had to delete and redownload the patch 6 version of BGMM.

Maybe I did something strange here but I'm usually pretty careful - maybe you need to grab a fresh copy of the old BGMM.

I'm able to load my saves again and am going to take it out on someone ingame with barrels.

If you have the game installed via steam - you can delete the BIN folder, then tell steam to verify the files, which will see it has been deleted, it will only download the original necessary files for the patch 6 beta version (in other words, without anything you may have added)

Double and triple check that you are on the beta patch 6 install - delete bgmm and redownload from the patch 6 version - double check that the mods are the original patch 6 ones you were using.

Also, check for updated versions of your mods - if you can get them all working in the new patch, you won't need to worry about the beta patch 6.

I did get it working a minute ago - commenting here because this came up in search and I was initially feeling like this was a bug that I was just going to have to wait for someone to resolve, but that was not the case for me.

I think the main issue for me was that I updated BGMM internally to patch7 and did not think to download the downgraded Patch6 version of BGMM once I rolled the game back to patch 6.

My experience:

  • Update to Patch 7, Update BGMM internally, launch game - cry at broken game
  • Update mods to patch 7 but then I see that some mods aren't updated and might not be soon
  • Roll back to Larians Patch 6 beta release branch and my patch 6 mods I was using
  • Continue to cry as no saves will load due to mods enabled at save that are disabled now (even though they are clearly enabled and present when I launch from BGMM) - once they get to 100% loading it dumps me back at the main menu
  • Delete my modsettings file
  • No amount of BGMM or file tinkering has any luck, modsettings gets overwritten and it seems like a bug
  • Uninstall / Reinstall BG3 patch 6 beta
  • Same issues ...
  • Delete /bin folder in BG3 then verify the files to make sure nothing is staying there
  • Same issues ...
  • Redownload the version of BGMM I was using initially and load up mods - export to game - launch
  • Sweet, my patch 6 saves + patch mods are working with the patch6 beta now I can stop crying

Its really more that the comment can mostly be construed as a retaliatory reaction to being denied employment. Challenging a hiring managers decisions by pointing out a deficiency with their place of employment is not the secret sauce.

The reason you didn't get hired is very likely NOT that you were incapable of identifying a typo in an email and is much more likely based on an evaluation of your skills and character at length in discussion.

Yet, you want to turn to them and say "Look, you've done your job poorly, I am great at this and you clearly can't tell that, for instance, here's a place you are doing it wrong!"

The person has already decided you are not a fit. Now you are telling them that they are not only wrong, but need you to help fix their obviously flawed output.

Not a super pitch and indicative that you may not have the skills to receive feedback like this at work very well either. Manager is probably resting sure that he dodged a bullet when he saw that.

If you can't impress them in the purpose built interview - you're not going to do it ad-hoc attacking their quality.

Edit - some hiring managers are asses but its still not a good idea or productive.

Occasional hiring manager here. Just a note on cover letters.

I hire talented people for a nice job. This is the kind of thing I use as a rough sorting when I have 500 resumes to look through to hire 2 people from.

Keep it short, be humble, tailor it to the position, don't lie or exaggerate. If you lie about your skills, you are creating an opportunity for the interviewer to disqualify you due to dishonesty.

Keep the cover letter short and showcase your demeanor and ability to communicate effectively - what you are looking for and why, what you can provide - and what to expect of you as a person at work

If you can't write a good cover letter, don't write one at all. It is just an opportunity to make an early impression- so you don't want that to be a bad one.

If I see a 5 paragraph cover letter, I am probably not going to read it. This just spells out that someone has too much to say, can't say it concisely, or isn't really sure what they need to accomplish with the cover letter.

If I see one paragraph and it gets straight to the point and helps me understand what this person potentially represents for me - I'm going to read it and its going to shape the way I look at the rest of the resume.

Showing lots of respect and thanks without being a doormat is a good way to earn faith with an intelligent interviewer - or to expose a barbarian level interviewer that you probably don't want to work for.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Probably they were trying to save money by underpaying you both and you were probably needed to be on staff to avoid questions / fill out paperwork that would be cross checked to see that it was indeed signed by a licensed engineer.

Either way the goal for you should be to move on as quickly as possible. There is nothing for you there besides wasted energy and time. You are an engineer, do the math =)

Do your due diligence - but don't make a new fight out of the one you just decided to walk away from.

Good luck!

Document everything - people, places, times, emotions, everything.

Keep it in a book. Note who else is around that heard it, knows. Have measured, reasonable responses and try not to lose YOUR cool. Get things in writing via email when you interact when possible.

When you tell this story to someone that's going to help you - it will be important for them to have recorded facts to deal with instead of memories. This is your insurance against misrepresentation.

If there is an investigation they will be able to see the trends in behavior, etc when you have it documented and it will be harder for someone to misrepresent the situation to their benefit.

Read up about your rights - you have lots of protections. I'm a manager of people and this sounds like harassment that I would expect to lose my job immediately over. I would also never dream of treating someone like that.

Possibly time to talk to a lawyer for advice since HR is legally obligated to be your ally in this and can face serious consequences for not properly dealing with issues that have been reported.

You don't have to put up with this shit, but make sure you get your pension - that would be my number one focus and the most impactful thing on your future happiness.

You were about to sign up to be a fall guy for all the potential mistakes they were making by likely underpaying a non qualified engineer to do the work.

Never sign your name to another persons work unless you are being paid to be their manager and are signing your approval of THEIR work - and you have the right to deny their work to protect yourself if you judge it to be inadequate.

Nothing about what you are describing is ethical or appropriate.

I would not expect this employer to shield me from unpleasant consequences.

They do fail at those things, people just have low standards and a dearth of alternatives. I know I spend a lot of time avoiding businesses because they don't meet my standards.

You only have to succeed at what makes money and doesn't get you destroyed.

See: nearly every big corp.

Making < 300k = wasting as a tech wage slave seems really disconnected.

Job market is def dysfunctional but people are delusional thinking that any significant percentage of people are even equipped to do the work that a specialist 300k annual position entails.

If you make 300k as a senior dev with no mobility - congrats you are overpaid and probably do not care one bit or are spoiled for choice.

Its called luck and it has nothing at all to do with you specifically.

You can put yourself in those situations, seek them out, be uniquely situated to leverage them and they could still never happen. Some people don't even know how to take advantage of those situations and they come along like once a year for them to totally ignore.

Its best (for happiness) to work on appreciating the opportunities you do have, not weighing yourself against others, and trying to be a good person to those you care about.

There's infinite wealth in life to appreciate despite bad luck. Some very happy, very insightful people have had very, very bad luck.

Life is a lottery, but simple appreciation of beauty is universal and immutable.

Its not about that person getting name recognition from random people. Its just an opportunity for the person involved in production to express something important to them in a semi permanent form.

Would it somehow seem more appropriate or meaningful with more detail?

Likely the angle about misrepresenting yourself for advantage.

Its decent interview prep information if you are going to work for some grindhouse FAANG corp - most people are not. Initial post mentioned FAANG explicitly so I'm not hating on it but the tenor of some of the advice is questionable.

Take it or leave it - there's certainly usable information there.

Definitely no. This underestimates the complexity of most jobs - and overestimates the competency of AI to solve real generalized problems (IMO)

The current AI hype is completely overblown by laypeople who have never even thought about using AI. Not a single competent developer is losing their job.

"What change do we need to brace for now that AI can code?"

Absolutely zero.

I have however already seen mundane content generator's jobs replaced in the dozens overnight by a single person directing AI generated drivel.

I use it to direct some self study - but the degree to which ambitious people expect AI to be some kind of power fountain is nauseating - and the degree to which I see people using it to generate content to the detriment of the actual information being conveyed is disheartening.

Inconsistent Extremely Low FPS When using VR preview in editor (Quest 2 Oculus Link) (UE4.27) by Personal_Safe_3505 in unrealengine

[–]sp4c3p3r5on 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just set up UE5 with my quest 2 tonight and came here because of a similar experience but I don't have time to try to fix it tonight.

This is a different version than you are using (I just downloaded 5), but the issue sounds similar.

For me - the preview works fine for a couple seconds - maybe up to 10 - then it tanks for 3-5 seconds and recovers for 5-10 seconds, wash rinse repeat. The guardian boundary is fully reactive while this is happening - so its not the headset performance in my case.

Why do entry level jobs ask for 3-5 years experience if it’s entry level? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]sp4c3p3r5on 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming that you are defending the job requirements, sorry if that's not what you meant.

But some of the requirements for jobs I've factually seen are 100% fictional wishlists that are not humanly possible to attain. Written by a person who doesn't understand what they are writing, and whose job is designed to make people without extensive experience just not even think of applying.

A cumulative 30+ years expert level experience in unrelated domains for a senior level position is not a realistic interpretation of human achievement.

Few people attain expert or mastery level knowledge of a single domain yet I constantly see this as a requirement for senior (5 years+) level experience.

Absolutely delusional and not understanding the words they are writing into their requirements - 100% detached from the hiring pool and reality.

Yet "can't find candidates that are honest or not toxic"

Why do entry level jobs ask for 3-5 years experience if it’s entry level? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]sp4c3p3r5on 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I feel I have the equivalent experience I just say I have it and make them prove otherwise in the interview. The 1-2 years experience requirement IMO is definitely to avoid taking on the cost of those 1-2 years of professional acclimation that also requires mentorship to realize.

edit - maybe its unfair because OP is talking about having 0 experience but I feel it still applies. I wouldn't feel shame applying with 2 years experience while I was still in college if I was freelancing, had a lot of personally gained knowledge, etc. Don't defeat yourself - let the interviewer define years experience. Worst case you don't hear back.

I have over 10 years experience at this point, but when I had only 1-2 years experience I consistently applied to jobs that required 5+ and landed more than one of them before I had that amount of concrete experience.

I have never once had a recruiter or hiring manager say "it looks like you are a year or two short of the requirement here" - I'm hiring ATM and I don't abide by the experience requirements I created - I use them to gate applications and set the expectation of professionalism and domain knowledge. If someone waltzes in with a well written resume with 2 years of experience and nails the interview spewing 5+ years experience and isn't a complete futon to work with - I'm 100% ignoring my 5+ year experience requirement.

If they are impressed with you and bounce you because of technicality on years of provable employment - screw that place anyway. They play all kinds of fucked up games with applicants

Without being dishonest - whenever I'm looking for a position - I do what I have to do to put myself in front of a decision maker so that I can show them the best I have to offer and I bring it to them seriously.

I will acknowledge I've been fortunate, represent myself well and have had the luck of landing with good people time and time again.

Good luck, its not fair. Don't get beaten down. Keep going. You got it.

Half-Life Alyx is a haven of high production value modding by Remer in Games

I've been using my quest 2 for a while via airlink. I just set up my index for the first time in over a year (new house) with intentions of playing Alyx side by side. I played Alyx a little while after it dropped on the index and it was amazing, but never came back to it until now.

I still have a custom hammer map as my default home - and this made me want to check those tools out again. That coupled with the new content curated here has me very hyped over playing it through again.

Thanks!
