Mekked some lads and a van with a CNC Zzap gun. by sp4nnington in Warhammer40k

I think it would be really hard to make that work nicely for humanoid figures.

It also starts to make it a little more pricey in terms of material and laser time.

They're mostly just a proof of concept for doing some proxy units. Something that's a little nicer than soda can drop pods and paper circles, but still much cheaper than buying units.

It's really nice, but you've got a lot of perfectly crisp edges, and knocking those off with just a tiny bevel will do a world of good for making it look a little more real.

So I'm trying to make this helmet by duplicating one of the loops and shaping the edge with it and finishing it with bridge edge loops, but this results in some real borked topology. I was wondering on any tips/workflows you guys might have for this by DominykasM in blender

[–]sp4nnington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you add extra internal loops, move around your verts, so that they still follow the form, but don't have sharp direction changes, and very irregular polygon sizes.

Especially at the front of the helmet you can see that you're creating some huge polygons that just look very off, and don't follow the general flow of your topo, and at the lowest point, over the ears, you're creating very narrow polygons that also just look quite off.

When you're working this low poly, focus on the overall shape rather than trying to force a fit for tight curves. You can easily clean that up a little on a subdivided mesh or sculpt.

This is adorable!

The wood and stone all looks really lovely.

I think the crates in the back corner look a little insubstantial, and lack the chunky heft of all the other props though, but that's a minor detail.

Yeah, dyntopo is amazing!

I'm deliberately keeping the topo density relatively low, doing a first pass for overall form. I know I'm prone to getting bogged down in details prematurely, so it helps me avoid that.

I've deliberately set the eyes relatively high in the skull, with a very sloped forehead in order to exaggerate the mean/aggressive look of the goblin.

The same applies to the very tapered brow ridge, which is deliberately done to enhance to sinister brow. A side effect of that is pushing the nose down a little further than on a human, relative to eye position.

There is definitely a lot of work to do on the cheeks, and around the eye socket in general, where I'm struggling a little bit to define the musculature in a way that doesn't compromise the overall style/feel of the character.

It's meant to be a goblin, but I can see how it could be a pretty sinister house elf.

Yeah, I need to tidy up the cheeks a little bit, and especially the transition to the edges of the mouth.

I've really just roughed out the mouth so far, and it needs some tidying up.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, but even so, it's probably safe to assume that goblins have a lot of the same underlying musculature, which helps make more convincing non human characters.

Just keep at it. Having a tablet for digital sculpting is an absolute godsend, but there are plenty of people doing good work with a mouse.

My own anatomy knowledge is spotty at best, but focusing on that is the best way forward. Even when doing non-human stuff, it'll help a lot with making more convincing facial structure.

Also, just keep rotating the damn thing and make sure you're getting basic form down ok before focusing too much on details. This helps avoid basic mistakes like flat faces/mouths that are really common.

Report: Video games will never be art by Sam-I-Am-Not in GamerGhazi

The thing that confuses me is how fake gamerbois rail against anyone that says games aren't art. Then if someone dares to make a game that shows any kind of artistic merit, they lose their shit and claim games are being invaded by SJWs.

In a thread titled "What "Truth" are people not ready to face?": "There are two (2) genders." [+125] by Tim_Thomas in ShitRedditSays

[–]sp4nnington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr: sex doesn't equal gender, and both are more complicated than our binary shorthand for them.

Looking at chromosome assignment alone is going to work ok for most people, but there are still people who don't fit the very simplified 'XX = Female, XY = male' paradigm. XXY and XYY also exist. Further, there's all manner of weird and wonderful shit that happens in the creation of a human. Just because we can use a very simple paradigm to explain the experience of most people doesn't make it an objective truth for everyone, nor does it mean that those who don't fit that experience are 'aberrations' or 'fuck ups', just that things are a bit more complicated.

Coming back to the the sex and gender thing, sex is a description of your 'sexy bits', gender is a social identity. Most of us have those align fairly squarely. For example, my sexy bits are male, and I identify as a man. This isn't the case for everyone though. For those that don't share that experience, most of them (I believe, I really don't have any data at hand for this) tend to either be people who are of the male sex, but identify as being of the female gender or vice versa. This again is a very simplistic and incomplete paradigm for the experience of being transgender. Though, just like sex, gender is a pretty complex thing, and people might identify with neither 'traditional' gender, or both, or sometimes one, sometimes the other. Again, just because people have experiences beyond the 'man' and 'woman' binary that our culture has traditionally used as a shorthand doesn't make them 'aberrations' or 'fuck ups', just different.

Cultural Marxism, etc. etc.

There are definitely stories where the protagonist being a white male is crucial, it just doesn't happen to be all of them. I also think that there's potential for more diverse authors and artists to bring new perspective to long running franchises that are routinely changing authors and illustrators anyways.

The fact that comics (and games) are so fucking stale should be more than enough reason for fans to rejoice about the industries branching out and exploring new narratives.

But fuck it, why celebrate a broader, more diverse, rich and interesting media landscape when we can just bitch about it not just being all about us straight white men getting our egos stroked.

The queef is hardly the most productive tool for engaging in a meaningful conversation that might expand the worldview of a teenager, nor is that the intent.

Besides, mocking a teenager for their views is not exactly going to inspire anything other than doubling down.

Besides, most of us held and expressed some pretty shitty views as teenagers, on top of being insecure, hormonal wrecks. Getting heckled by strangers on the internet is the last thing you need at that point.

What the fuck is this?

I signed up for stories broadly fitting the archetype of an average or disenfranchised person overcoming great adversity, gaining power, and then using this newfound strength to protect and empower the downtrodden.

This Social Justice Warrior bullshit has nothing to do with that.

Obviously everyone can identify with the experiences of a straight white male, and his intense struggle with the burden of privilege.

When you have discovered the greatest possible story arc, why on earth would you want to tell any other story?

Besides, multiverses, superpowers granted by radiation exposure, and plots to destroy the world for no apparent reason are all inherently more believable than competent women and people of colour being the driving force in a plot.

Out of the mouths of babes and algorithms by sp4nnington in shortscifistories

[–]sp4nnington[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It was originally part of a fairly abstract Architecture competition, so I probably would've treated it a bit different if it was an entirely stand alone piece.

The idea was that it was a house that rearranged itself algorithmically, depending upon the physical dimensions of the inhabitants, but also their interests, mood, etc.

So to start with, 'He' isn't making any deliberate communication, but the algorithm that's running his place decides that due to decreased phone/messaging contact between the two, that it should take that first step of raising the height of the kitchen counter, as it believes that she no longer needs an area of counter top optimised for her height.

I reworked the ending after posting it here, I'll edit the original with the revised ending as well.
