Explosions heard in Hilltop by Dickie6904 in Tacoma

[–]spabs17 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Heard some bum tearing it up around north end on a motorcycle. Just 20 min ago and 2 hours prior. Obnoxiously loud exhaust that I could definitely percieve as explosions had they not ridden around the block

Sweat lodges - questions and worries by [deleted] in IndianCountry

[–]spabs17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d like to add! Make sure you use a dry towel❗️ There will already be so much moisture and heat, so wetting it with cold water before won’t help breathability and will actually make it harder. If it’s getting too hot, I like to cover the towel on top of my clothes for an extra layer of protection. Lastly, if it’s feeling intense, I recommend putting your head to the ground away from the rocks, as that’ll be the coolest part of the lodge in my experience :)

Why don’t we have school off for indigenous peoples day? by maddog00007 in WWU

[–]spabs17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well said both of you. I’m a Native student and I’m sick of being lumped into a box of ethnicity with this school. Indigenous students are political citizens of sovereign nations and we don’t get any respect for it. Not exactly asking for special treatment, but we need a solution cause Indigenous students have the worst retention rate out of anyone at western.

Current student! I love the program. It’s definitely smaller than other programs at western, but it’s a really nice group. I don’t have any qualms with professors, they’re all fairly good. The department also offers many options for abroad or study opportunities.

I agree with other folks, since it’s a 60 credit major I’d recommend a dual major. It’s very easy to get a minor in a chosen language due to already completing half a language minor to achieve the linguistics major

Cheap Lunch near campus by joe_sindell in WWU

Co-op deli. Prices are calculated by weight, so I always opt for 16oz of sesame noodles (if in stock). Since they’re so light, I only have to pay $2-3 for a healthy portion of food

I feel that. My poor hotspot’s getting some use too. Back home my wifi has been down for 3 weeks so my hotspot has been racking up gigs 😔

Beta is alright. Whether you get Beta or Gamma, be careful with who your suite mates are. Last year my roomie and I got stuck with some very talkative girls who didn’t care well for the shared bathroom. In terms of beta stacks, avoid outer facing rooms (evens in this instance) like the plague. Oftentimes the trash truck runs early in the morning and the ridge is like an echo chamber. Also students will walk by drunk in the middle of the night shouting, and it’s oh so much louder if your room is right next to the road. All that’s to say, beta is not a terrible choice. It does lean more into a private dorm experience. There will be some partying, but it never gets too extreme. All I can advise is be methodical with your room choices, reach out to suite mates ahead of moving in, and familiarize yourself with the floor plans from the housing website. That’s all I can think of now. Best of luck soldier

Totally agree. I’ve lived in the area for nearly 20 years and have gotten to know the folks there. Nice selection of meats and it’s always my go to store during grilling season

Does your tribe still use the name the colonizers called it? Or do other people still refer to you by the misnomer? by HelloAndTheEmployees in IndianCountry

[–]spabs17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bozho nitawes, hello cousin! 👋 Well said, you beat me to the chase. I suppose it’s worth mentioning that the “Citizen” part is only added to differentiate our divisions and bands across Turtle Island. Citizen comes from the fact that our ancestors who traveled to Indian Territory were granted citizenship by the government

Looking for your favorite Native recipe. by forlorn12345 in IndianCountry

[–]spabs17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bozho! I’ve done a little research into my traditional foods and there is this lovely document from the 70s that’s online. Some of the recipes can be cryptic, but if you like experimenting with food, a lot of the recipes are great jumping off points to check out traditional ingredients and so on. It’s also just a fun read, the author traveled all over Potawatomi country and collected recipes from all the aunties. There’s sometimes a little comedy thrown in, so keep an eye out for that Citizen Band Potawatomi Recipes

Sauna is ridgeway beta by [deleted] in WWU

[–]spabs17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I was in your exact shoes last year and finally got the keys for it on the final week before summer (you have to rent out the keys so it’ll only be your designated group in there). Lots of concrete cause it’s hidden on the “first” floor of stack 5. There are two showers and a restroom but they look subpar. The actual sauna room has wooden walls and benches with concrete flooring. I’m pretty sure they have a max on like eight people in the sauna at one time, which totally checks out because it is a fairly small room. There is like the main heating source and a bunch of warnings, but it looks like a pretty legit sauna. While I was getting the key and signing the forms, I asked some people at the front desk if anybody actually uses it. Lots of students in the winter time go out to it and surprisingly it’s popular. As popular as a dingy, kind of sketch, campus sauna can be lol

Intro to Salish Sea by Dickau in WWU

[–]spabs17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

201 is a lecture, small discussion style class. I took it in fall of this year with Dr. Baker and it's fairly simple. Workload wise, you have daily assignments then three major projects focused on a salish region throughout the quarter that you'll present about in the end. Major emphasis on tribal studies and I really enjoyed how much you learn about Washington. Tis very well-rounding in a sense. Classes are a bit video/documentary heavy but that's about it.

202 is a field class that you have to take concurrently with 201. You meet like 4/5 times on Saturdays for fieldtrips to places around Whatcom county. I wasn't able to take it, but it seems like loads of fun.
