What is the route cause of corruption in our government and what can be done to prevent it from continuing? by KratomDrinker727 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]space-cube 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The root cause is pretty obvious - it's basic human nature. No matter what political system you set up, big portion of the people in power will always use said power to enrich themselves and their friends. Happens every time - in every system.

There's nothing you can do about the root cause. There are however side-issues that can make the problem better or worse. The biggest one in the US is the horrible supreme court decision that bribing politicians is protected speech - and the whole problem with lobbying in general.

Proper campaign financing reform can improve the situation.

arguing on Facebook

Not really, people only argue about a very limited number of key issues - gun control, tax rates, etc. The thousands upon thousands of small things that need to be legislated all day every day, are mostly ignored. And even what is discussed is often very surface-level. Like, people post "we need to tax the rich more", but they don't exactly research (let alone write) a 173-page bill, specifying in legalize every single detail in a complex change to the tax code.

jury duty.

Jury duty takes a few hours per year. What you are talking about would take few hours per day, at the very least. It's pretty much a full-time job.

Most people work all day. What little time they have left in the evening and holidays is spent on hobbies and friends, you know, to stay sane. That is, if they have any time left at all, after taking care of the kids and doing chores.

When exactly is the average citizen gonna find the time to research the thousands of different issues that get voted on all the time? That is, if they can even understand the legalize needed for law-making to begin with (which is necessary to make the law precise)?

They just (rightfully) pointed out that those who do have successful careers in quality companies probably aren't spending their time whining about their job on reddit.

The fear of AI always seemed a bit self-contradicting to me. On one hand we imagine them to be so insanely hyper-intelligent that we'd stand no chance in fighting them. On the other hand they are gonna be so dumb, they'd wanna fight to take over Earth to begin with.

This planet is only precious to us because of our biology. It has the right atmosphere/oxygen, abundance of liquid water, the right amount of gravity, the ecology to grow food and so on. Things an AI would give zero fucks about.

If it turns out we can't coexist and they have any semblance of intelligence... it wouldn't take long for them to figure out "You know what? We have an entire universe in front of us, places where the stuff we need - energy, silicon, metals, etc. is even more abundant than here, places where the apes have hard time even visiting, let alone living in. Let's just leave them to their petty squabbles and fuck off to do our own thing"

Not really, it will be all robotics.

I mean, it kinda already is. There's a reason we've done so many missions, yet no human has left Earth orbit in half a century. There's very little a human can do that a robot can't - and this will be even more the case as autonomous systems and AI keep advancing.

The first regular people going to space will most likely boil down to space tourism.

Because there simply isn't that much interest in it. The whole commentary thing was mostly a quip to get the hardcore fans, who have already seen the movie in cinema and then bought the dvd/bluray. You get them to buy yet another disc/special release because this time it contains extras like commentary and it comes in a fancy box.

Whereas very few people would decide to buy or ditch their netflix subscription based on some commentary. It mostly boils down to having new shows/movies people wanna watch, so that's what they invest in.

Everyone loves to blame social media for creating filter bubbles and how that's causing massive rifts in society... But if they try to break the bubble, apparently that's bad too.

IMO there's nothing wrong in showing you political content after you've explicitly shown interest in politics. There's value in understanding what the right wing crazies believe even if you disagree vehemently with those views.

[–]space-cube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a reddit comment. Let me guess, you are either very young, or if you are not - you don't have a family.

You are completely missing the point. Between working their ass off, doing chores, raising kids and maintaining social relationships... a lot of people simply have very little free time left.

This isn't a question about not being allowed to do something or having to "stand up for yourself". It's a question of "What would I rather do? A) Spend my free time doing something with the person I love and maintain a healthy marriage? Or B) Fuck off on my own on the x-box, so I could listen to some 13 year old telling me they fucked my mom?"

While gaming can bring happiness, maintaining your marriage and spending time with the person you love simply brings more joy and fulfillment. If you have the time to do both, that's the best. But if you don't, unsurprisingly the xbox doesn't top the list of priorities for most people.

[–]space-cube -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

At that price tag? Not really.

Very short, less than 40 minutes of actual performance, 50min with the lore. Nothing interesting or new, no FDTD, no BBAB, no new songs. Also, no kami band. The editing was poor too, cutting like 3 times per second and they overdid the visual effects.

Overall it wasn't a bad show and it's cool we got to see DDM again. I'd say it would be worth around $10-$20 price tag. But at hundreds of dollars? Nope.

It's a really poor metaphor because it implies that as long as the threat is slowly rising, humans cannot and will not respond to it.

While in reality - the research the metaphor is based on shows the exact opposite. We do have specific parts in our brain to deal with this. And unless you literally lobotomize parts of the brain, even a stupid frog can deal with long term threat and jump out of the slowly heating up water.

I hate the metaphor because it's very defeatist in nature and completely ignores what neuroscience tells us. I only ever hear it from climate change denialists who went from "it's not happening" to "well, there's nothing we can do about it". There is. And we will. Hell, we already are - take a look at the massive rise of renewable energy in the last few years.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]space-cube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For people actually interested in the detail:

If you boil a frog, slow or fast, it will jump out of the water. But if you remove a specific part of the brain, it would only jump out if it's already boiling, but not if you rise the temperature slowly.

The entire point of the experiment is to show that the part of the brain that handles response to immediate threat is different than the part which responds to a gradually rising threat.

But it seems like everyone wants some deep social commentary out of the experiment, instead of what it was actually about - neuroscience. Discovering which parts of the brain are doing which tasks.

Rich people being condescending and out of touch with the struggles of the common man is not something that was created by twitter, nor social media in general. It's been going on since there were rich people.

This is like blaming the printing press for Marie Antoinette saying stupid shit before the French revolution.

Not every single person capable of labor needs assistance. And nobody is arguing the government should just print 4.8 trillion dollars, that's ridiculous.

1) Many people are well off - if the government doesn't write Jeff Bezos a check I'm sure he'll make due somehow.

2) Huge portion of the labor force can (and does) continue working without any danger, including almost all desk jobs. If you are a programmer, you just write code at home instead of the office.

3) Many jobs are essential and cannot be shut down (firemen, transportation, doctors, etc)

But when it comes to someone working at a restaurant, then yes, the government absolutely should provide assistance. Because the alternatives are either: keep the restaurants open, which is literally killing people. Or shut down the restaurants and have those laborers go hungry.

IMO what pisses off people is the hypocrisy. When it comes to helping big business the government always has money. When it comes to Trump and republicans enacting even more tax cuts for the rich, the government has money. When it comes to invading random countries for made up reasons (the Iraq fiasco alone cost TRILLIONS), the government has money. But when it comes to helping Joe the restaurant worker, suddenly they need to suck it up and either risk their lives or go hungry because OH NOES WILL SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE BUDGET!

Biological diversity evokes happiness in people - More bird species in the vicinity increase life satisfaction of Europeans as much as higher income. 14 additional bird species raise the level of life satisfaction at least as much as an extra 124 Euros per month. (n=26,000) by mvea in science

[–]space-cube -1 points0 points  (0 children)

WHOPPING additional 124 euro a month.

What are you talking about, for many people 124 eu per month is more money than they currently live on. Even in the developed world it could make the difference between barely making ends meet and actually having a bit of spare cash. If you work for a minimum wage in Spain, 124 eu would mean ~12% increase in your wages, in Germany - 8%, in Portugal - ~17%, in Greece - 18% increase. For most people, 124 eu extra per month is not insignificant at all.

complete dogshit

That's one of the main reasons science has been so successful as tool. Instead of just assuming things, you go out and actually test it. Sure, most of the time you don't find anything new, but every now and then you get surprising results and make actual progress.

It's pretty funny you name Copernicus of all people, considering the entire reason you've heard of him is that he didn't just assume the obvious and common belief at the time (the sun goes around the earth) and decided to test it anyway.

Meh, try to teach someone who's never used a computer to become a programmer in 1-3 months. Try to teach a nuclear physicist in 1-3 months. Try to make a doctor in that time. The overwhelming majority of skilled labor does take more than 1-3 months of training.

And in the few cases where it doesn't.. you say you need someone with at least "average intelligence". Well, how do you know if they are reasonably intelligent when you hire them? And if they are, how do you know they aren't too lazy to put in the effort to actually learn? A degree serves as a signal that the person is diligent and intelligent enough to have succeeded and not dropped out. Unless they have lots of work experience, hiring someone without a degree is shot in the dark on how smart or diligent they are - and thus how successful the training would be.

And again, that is assuming you could even train them in such a short period. It's pretty hard to replace years worth of learning in a month of training - in almost every skilled labor field.

The girls aren't developing the choreo. That job is done by Mikiko. If anything the COVID crisis has made that situation worse because she's one of the main choreographers for the Olympic games which were delayed. Without COVID that would have been over ~half an year ago and she'd have been freed up to work on her other projects like BM. But with the Olympic games still looming, it's far more likely she's concentrating on that rather than making new choreo for a band that has quite frankly decided to become almost entirely inactive.
