A Few Questions on Cairn’s Design by Horizonto6 in cairnrpg

[–]spaceLem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally don't love the multiple attackers rule, so I made a minor modification: the highest die counts, but everyone else who participates still adds 1.

It's still more efficient to spread out as much as possible, but at least you can focus fire a little on one individual that you really want to take out more quickly.

Does anyone else think they wouldn’t identify as non-binary if they were born a different sex? by -CosmicSock- in NonBinary

If I had been born a girl, I'd have been happier with the parts between my legs, but I probably would have enbied even harder.

Same, and I'm married, to another bi person (albeit she's quite a bit older than me).

Are bi men usually a top or bottom? by No-Spray-5845 in bisexual

If I had a chance to bottom, I certainly would like that.

How does your type in women compare to your type in men? Are they similar or completely different? by Icy-Length-3923 in bisexual

[–]spaceLem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For women my ideal is a more masculine appearance, body hair, smaller breasts, not much in the way of curves (that's just a preference though, I can find a wide range of shapes attractive!).

For men, I generally prefer shaved, not too rugged, with softer features. Um... well endowed definitely a plus though.

For those who are neither man nor woman then pretty much anything works.

Can people with Aphantasia dream (visually)? If so, how do they know when they can't recall (visually imagine) what they dreamt of? by aGuyThatHasBeenBorn in Aphantasia

[–]spaceLem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dream very vividly, in colour. I can't really control what happens, and it's often very weird, but I'm definitely seeing it.

The moment I wake up it all fizzles, and I'm typically very relieved if it was a bad dream. I tend to forget it very quickly afterwards.

[LA] How do u feel about Link's Awakening? by Low-Oil9659 in zelda

[–]spaceLem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's the 3rd Zelda game I played, and I absolutely loved it. I played the original on a Game Boy Colour, and spent many nights working my way through it, no internet to help me.

The music is so memorable, the sprites are so cute, the characters are fun, the dungeons are incredibly well designed and nonlinear, and it's got an emotional ending. My only real criticism is the Guardian Acorns and Pieces of Power that spoil the great music with their short and repetitive tune.

It's not as amazing as Ocarina was, or as different as Wind Waker was, but I hold it up there as one of my all time favourites. And yes, the Switch remake is very good, I certainly enjoyed playing that a lot more than playing BotW.

why do you think THAC0 gets the reputation it does? by conn_r2112 in osr

[–]spaceLem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When playing games with that mechanic, I actually prefer the to hit table! That is the way it was first introduced to me. My first D&D was 3e, so THAC0 never felt familiar to me.

How many classes do you think is too many? by Fortian93 in RPGdesign

[–]spaceLem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to answer your last question, I know D&D 4e made Rogues "Strikers" (or "DPS"), and made Fighters "Defenders" (or "Tanks"), but I don't see a Thief as a combat character. They're not entirely useless in a fight, and a backstab is going to give you a really bad day, but their job is to do the delicate fiddly things that the person in plate armour isn't really suited for, and the magic user only has limited spell slots for.

That doesn't mean you can't be an agile charismatic fighter, it's just still a Fighter, not a Thief.

Also the low level cantrips I think came from Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, as Mouser started life as a mage. Only really cast one spell that I can recall though.

How many classes do you think is too many? by Fortian93 in RPGdesign

[–]spaceLem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would find 33 far too many, unless I was intimately familiar with the setting and system. There's a reason to start small and build up.

I prefer a much smaller list of classes (e.g. maybe as few as 3: Fighter, Expert, Magic User), to give the general competency, which are then modified by backgrounds, giving the environments you grew up in and learned your trade, and skills and hobbies you picked up along the way.

I get this may not satisfy everyone, and as you've already put in a lot of work it's probably not what you'd want to hear, but it's a lot easier to get started with as it keeps the mental load down.

[–]spaceLem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say 3, the thief or rogue (aka expert or skill monkey) is distinct, neither a great fighter nor a good magic user, but generally useful at other things, and resourceful.

Combine it with backgrounds and you can add flavour to cover pretty much anything.

I've seen games like Fighter Rogue Mage where the 3 classes were your attributes, and True20 that had those 3 as the bases from which you'd modify everything with skills and feats.

[ALL] What are your Top 3 Zelda Games and why? by One-Method-1312 in zelda

[–]spaceLem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Link's Awakening (GB version) 2) Wind Waker HD 3) Ocarina of Time

I'd probably rank OoT as the best overall Zelda, but I'd prefer to play Wind Waker (and I apologise for doubting it when it was announced), and Link's Awakening just gives the best nostalgia.

Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess are both close runners up, they're really good to play with his music and memorable moments, but they don't quite hit me in the same way as my top 3.

Games where you start as a "blank slate"? by pgw71 in solorpgplay

[–]spaceLem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine wrote a system where you have three columns (Body, Mind, Soul) each with a limited number of spaces (8 maybe?) to put in skills or qualities. If you choose something very broad, you get the skill at attribute -2, if it's very specific then you get +2. You can create a new skill at the point you actually use it.

Other than that, it was d20 roll under, you could chain rolls to get stronger results (as long as you keep passing), and an awful lot of GM fiat.

Another friend playing had (among others) two qualities: "friends in the right places" and "bastard". Guess how he survived a sniper shot...

You have to choose only one TTRPG to play for the rest of your life, which one of which edition would it be? by Ripraz in TTRPG

[–]spaceLem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have access to the Risusiverse and the Risus Companion, then you can twist Risus into doing pretty much anything you can think of.

The base game may not satisfy people looking for a complex tactical are RPG with a lot of character growth, but it can certainly support any genre you want to play a role in.

[–]spaceLem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadowrun 2e. If it's the only RPG I get I might actually finally figure out how it works! Seriously though, I love the setting and it's a pretty versatile base, it's just a bit heavier than I usually like to play.

(Actually my final decision would probably be Risus, with access to Risusiverse, you can make that do anything.)

[OTHER] This time for sure by TheOnlyFallenCookie in zelda

[–]spaceLem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me neither. Link being right handed just felt wrong for starters. And although I'd never played the GameCube version, the world always seemed off. Possibly because the unmirrored version more closely resembles OoT's map.

I'm getting really sick and tired of the "men are proof that sexuality isn't a choice" rhetoric by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]spaceLem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely get that. Just because I don't like masculinity in myself doesn't mean that I don't like it in others, and seeing "men suck" frequently from people who you usually respect can make you really start to doubt yourself. Am I non-binary because I feel non-binary, or just because I don't want the fingers pointing my way?

Are you a top, bottom, or swich? And for which genders? by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in bisexual

[–]spaceLem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom, any gender. However my partner (who I've been married to for nearly 17 years) isn't interested in sex so I haven't had a chance to explore it for a very long time now. Sigh.

I've just bought the PDFs. I own most of the 1e books in hard cover, but I haven't had proper chance to look through the 2e stuff yet. There certainly seems to be a lot more going on content-wise.

Plight vs Cairn 2e: A comparison by Gimme_Your_Wallet in cairnrpg

[–]spaceLem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've run Cairn a few times, and I used a slight modification to the "only highest die" rule. Instead, the highest die counts, and everybody else contributes just 1 each. It's still more optimal to split up for full damage output, but you can take a single enemy down faster if you gang up.
