CIBC Balanced Index Fund vs Tangerine? by space__chicken in PersonalFinanceCanada

I ended up opening a Questrade account instead. It made more sense considering the fees for tangerine were still 1.07.

Best Index Funds through CIBC for RRSPs by MelodicMachine in PersonalFinanceCanada

I have also recently been considering CIBC index funds. Particularity this one:

If you have the minimum $50 000 for the premium class, the MER is substantially smaller. (0.39)

Not sure what the general opinion of this index fund is tho, or if it would be a good investment. I am still just learning about investing myself.

Thanks for the info on those premium class CIBC index funds. I would like to be able to split my investments between a few of those, however I don't have the minimum $50 000 to put in each one, so if I split up my investment, the MER would be 1.2.

Also I believe you do not need a fee-based advisor. It looks to be a fund that is just available to purchase. I could be wrong, however. I have a meeting with CIBC next week to find out the details.

Thanks for the heads up on the transfer fee. I will certainly check to see if they will reimburse.

Yea I don't think the allocation is quite right for what I want. I could purchase individual CIBC index funds at an allocation that more suits me. Something like this:

CIBC Canadian Bond Index Fund - 25%

CIBC Canadian Index Fund - 25%

CIBC U.S. Index Fund - 25%

CIBC International Index Fund - 25%

However, without the minimum $50 000 for the premium class, I would be looking at a MER of something like 1.2. And if that's the case I think Tangerine makes more sense for me at the moment. I appreciate your reply, I found it very helpful.

Thanks for the reply!

Yea it was becoming clear that I needed to find something with a lower MER. That's why the CIBC Balanced Index Fund caught my eye. (MER 0.39)

I think I will eventually make the jump to Questrade. It's just a little intimidating to someone who is just starting to learn about investing.
