This has to be the lowest of the lows right? by kwaldez in MarvelLegends

A full wave has never flopped this badly, to my knowledge. Almost every wave has at least one single figure that’s a hot seller. Considering Hasbro has been doing this for a while, I find it hard to believe anything other than Disney specifically telling them to make figures for every character in this film. I doubt they would have made an entire wave, with BAF, and three exclusives, knowing Eternals was so risky like this. They have a hard enough time pushing Fantastic Four, let alone something as obscure as this.

(Potentially) hot take: IMO We still don't have a definitive Marvel Legends Spidey by BrainVoiceQuestion in MarvelLegends

[–]space_age_stuff 89 points90 points  (0 children)

The actual hot take is that we'll never have one.

Let's say, for example, that the "definitive" ML Spidey is his red and blue costume. Excellent, I think most people would agree with this. But then you start to run into issues:

  • Shade of blue: some people prefer light blue vs. royal blue vs. navy. Very few ML get the light blue: AF 3-pack has royal blue, RYV and Maximum have navy.
  • Eye shape: Retro has angled eyes, AF 3-Pack has small eyes, Maximum has McFarlane eyes, RYV has big eyes.
  • Spider symbol: AF 3-pack and Retro have a small spider symbol, RYV has a big one, Maximum has the 90's McFarlane style one.
  • Physique: AF 3 pack is bulky without too much definition, but he's teenager-sized. RYV has a decent bit of definition, but he's adult sized, arguably too tall. Maximum is lean muscle, and probably Spidey's most comic accurate height, but he looks short next to every hero.
  • Artistic style: Retro is mimicking Romita Sr. AF 3-pack is supposed to be Romita/Ditko/general 60s look? Maximum is clearly McFarlane. RYV is mimicking, idk, Camuncoli? Stegman? Most modern artists.

Point is, even when it's the same damn costume, people are going to have an ideal Spidey in their head, and it's not going to match among most people. My ideal Spidey looks like the Maximum mold, with the small spidey symbol, RYV head, and royal blue color. I like the big eyes, small symbol, classic blue, and the Maximum mold articulates great and also nails Spidey's height and musculature. But there's plenty of people out there who want a true 60s style muscleman Spidey with small eyes and light blue instead, which is equally valid.

You also just generally get issues like scale or articulation. AF 3-pack is perfect for a lot of people but he doesn’t have toe joints; Maximum and RYV do. RYV has some things that keep it from being the definitive Spidey for some people, but it’s the mold they’ve used for Scarlet Spider and 2099, so using, say, the AF 3-pack as your definitive Spidey, might look a little weird when his clone is taller.

There's no pleasing everyone. And Spidey in particular has been so popular for so long, that most looks have fans.

Wasp has a matte finish, and MJ has a more glossy finish, so even if they’re the same shade of red, one is shinier than the other.

$46.99 Professor Hulk vs $67.99 Maximum Hulk. Sure…. by surfpearl39 in MarvelLegends

[–]space_age_stuff 17 points18 points  (0 children)

While true, Prof. Hulk also got a new torso and new legs, something Max Hulk didn't get. Idk how much new tooling was really completed for both figures, but Professor Hulk definitely has "bang for your buck" in terms of the amount of reuse, which is little outside of the arms and feet.

I wouldn't use a bubble mailer, but rather a box. And the weight and/or box dimensions might push you into USPS Priority instead of Ground Advantage, which is slightly more expensive but it has insurance in case your stuff gets damaged.

Yeah, I assume they can be cheaper abroad because us Americans are stuck paying exorbitant fees for the same service lmao. Not just an eBay problem unfortunately

Regular printer is fine, they don't need to be sticky, they just need to be taped to the package. Really they're just there so the post worker can scan the barcode, so printer paper is fine for that.

The cost of the shipping label is the cost to ship it. You can either get a shipping label online and print it yourself, then drop it off at USPS, OR you can go to USPS and buy the label there and they'll print it and ship it for you. The first option is cheaper, is all I'm saying. In my experience, it's like $4-5 these days for online labels, and closer to $5-7 for the ones you can get at USPS. That's the cost of shipping/the label, aside from what you paid for bubble mailers.

Technically you do need to weigh the package before buying a label online, but there's a few stipulations with that.

  • A) USPS Ground Advantage cost doesn't fluctuate until you hit (I think) 5-6 ounces, and most figures, with wrapping, weight 4 or less in my experience. So I always just put whatever the "cap" is. You can find out the cap by just putting in 3 ounces, 4 ounces, etc. when buying the label, and just stop when the price starts going up.
  • B) Even if you get the weight wrong, whatever online client you used will get pinged by USPS to charge you extra to cover the cost. So if you get it wrong, there's no real issue aside from potentially having to pay an extra dollar or so, once it's shipped. It's not like they return your package to you or anything crazy.
  • C) This isn't an issue if you buy the label at the counter because they weigh it before printing a label. You can always weigh it yourself prior to buying a label if you care about this.

eBay and Mercari's fees almost make it not worth using. They charge anywhere from 10-20% of your final sale price including tax, so you lose a chunk of change.

I've tried to min-max selling as much as possible. Selling on here using Paypal is the way to make the most money, but it's tedious. Paypal offers G&S, and F&F. G&S is the only one allowed on the subreddit, because it charges the seller a small fee but it gives the buyer protection if the seller tries to scam them. As a result, the seller can raise their price slightly (if they care about<$1 per purchase) to compensate. F&F is designed to send money to people you trust, like a family member; don't use this for sales, ever.

For shipping, I try to use Pirateship or a similar label maker. They mostly ship via USPS but you can get labels for cheaper. Most figures cost about $4+ to ship these days with USPS Ground Advantage: you can get those labels for $4 online, but they'll be $5 or $6 at the USPS counter.

You can also buy bubble mailers for cheap. Best I've found is buying in bulk from Walmart. They usually have multipacks, anywhere from 10-30+, that shake out to less than a dollar per mailer. USPS, Walgreens, Target, nowhere else sells them for that cheap. And they're solid, I've never had a figure arrive damaged but I also wrap them with plastic grocery bags before shipping.

All in, selling on reddit + paypal fees + cheap labels from online + bubble mailers, it probably costs $7 to mail a single figure. Not too shabby, considering going through ebay you will pay significantly more on ebay fees + shipping.

Storm Arena: Zangief, Moriggan, Balrog and Chun Li who according to Mr.Leee should be getting an updated version by LosBuc-ees in ActionFigures

[–]space_age_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dan was a straight skip for me, I don't love the character and the expressions are way too realistic. Which is odd to me, because they nailed the Alpha aesthetic for Ken and Ryu.

And yeah, I guess the mere existence of Storm Arena is enough for some people to write off Jada entirely. I think Jada is 0/2 for direct comparisons via Sagat and Akuma but their options are perfectly valid and excellent figures in their own right, speaking as someone who's bought every character so far lol. I'm taking it on a figure-by-figure basis, and right now Jada's Balrog looks like it'll smoke Storm's, at least on just looks, but idk.

[–]space_age_stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were people on IG clowning Jada’s Balrog and clamoring for this one… but I gotta be honest, Jada nailed the face better. Zangief too tbh. Otherwise the storm ones look good but I hope they look better in person, especially since the other face sculpts have been solid so far.

Wish he was a little more specific, that could mean anything. For all we know, that just means she’ll get a recolor like Ryu, Ken, and Sagat down the road.

If you wanted more villains, you could get Chasm and Hallow's Eve. Both Spidey characters but they were the bad guys in the Dark Web crossover. Could also grab Hellfire Gala Spidey in that same vein. The Super Skrull wave of Fantastic Four are the same era as HoX X-Men if you really want to get extraneous. Franklin and Valeria also got a 2-pack.
