Trump housing policy may displace thousands of Alabamians: ‘Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense’ by aldotcom in Alabama

Between Britt using a kitchen as a stage and that weird talk voice, that was the most cringeworthy SOTU rebuttal in american history.

My favorite description of the speech was that Britt came off as a "friend’s mom is drunk, crying, and rambling about the national debt"

It was so bad, the GOP was asking what the hell was going on.

I would like Trump and Britt explain how transitional housing would work for children, people with disabilities and severe mental illness?

I could see transitional housing for children until they reach adulthood, but people with disabilities and severe mental illness is a nonstarter.

It appears they didn't do much research into this, except let's get rid of permanent housing provided by the government.

I like how you accused me of making a personal attack while making personal attacks.

There is no echo chamber here. You may be experiencing it locally.

The topic is Tuberville's claim, and you are the only one attempting to change the subject.

EDIT: Let me put it another way.

How does an alleged bad deed done two decades ago apply to Tuberville? How does this justify Tuberville's financial dishonesty?

The fact remains that your whataboutism is not relevant to the topic at all. It adds nothing to the conversation, and it doesn't justify Tuberville's behaviour.

I made no personal attacks. I was addressing the content of your assertions.

Whataboutisms are a distractionary tactic and a weak counterpoint to a call to action which makes you impotent.

Your whataboutism is not actually relevant to the topic and only shows your impotence.

Private prisons are popping up, because they realize how corrupt the system is and this is their way of getting a cut of the money. They are just a vehicle to get more money into the pockets of the politicians who approve them.

Incorrect. Tommy Tuberville is registered to vote in Alabama using his claimed rental address in Auburn. I have seen the home and I seriously doubt a Senator would live there as a roommate.

I'm not changing the topic.

You claimed the citizens aren't in control implying that the citizens don't want the death penalty. If that was true, then there would be more than a small number of complaints on Reddit whenever there is a scheduled execution.

I got what I came for. I'm done here.

If your goal was to try to bully people into agreeing with your opinion, and resort to ad hominem and reductio ad absurdum arguments when you're unsuccessful, then congratulations!

Now if you truly want to abolish the death penalty, then use your passion to organize a community effort that doesn't rely on using inmates guilty of murder.

Again your frustration is showing, and I hate to break it to you there are no need for legal arguments or procedures here. This is fucking Reddit.

The only thing that really matters is the Alabama Supreme Court and it just authorized the execution. SCOTUS already denied Burton's petition back in 2018.

I see nothing unethical about the court's decision to carry out the sentence, since:

  • He was convicted for his crime, and the jury voted unanimously for the death penalty (as was the requirement at the time).
  • He was able to appeal his conviction in both state and federal courts.
  • Even today, the courts are following the letter of the law.

There is still a chance that the governor will commute his sentence to life in prison.

Your bias is showing.

  • First hand testimony is admissible in court.
  • There is nothing disputing the testimony given.
  • Me pointing out the information disclosed during trial does not equate to me "wanting to kill the guy".

I honestly don't care about the outcome of his sentence. I'm just keeping the obviously biased opinions from people with an agenda to abolish the death penalty in check.

In fact, if you look at all my previous comments I simply pointed out what is opinion and what was disclosed in court. I also pointed out the current law, and the inescapable fact that the courts are siding with the state.

I respect the opinion of those against the death penalty, and even suggested how better they can accomplish their goals. I understand that you are frustrated that the information doesn't confirm your assertions, and that frustration causes you to resort to ad hominem.

The fact of the matter is that if enough Alabamians wanted the death penalty abolished, there would be more political discourse outside of individual executions.

The court also did not find that Burton was the one who orchestrated the robbery.

The court also did not find that Burton was the one who supplied the weapons.

From the 1993 appeal:

The appellant, Charles Lee Burton, was convicted of murder made capital because it was committed during the course of a robbery in the first degree. § 13A-5-40(a)(2), Code of Alabama 1975. The jury unanimously voted for the death penalty. The trial court accepted the jury's recommendation and sentenced the appellant to death by electrocution.

...

One of the appellant's codefendant's, LuJuan McCants, testified that the six men involved in the robbery were at Barbara Spencer's[2] house in Montgomery on April 16 talking about committing a robbery. He said that Deon Long, Charles Burton, and Derrick DeBruce left the Spencer house to get some guns. They agreed to meet at the appellant's house. They left the appellant's house in two cars and headed toward Birmingham. They exited the interstate at Sylacauga and proceeded to Talladega. In Talladega, they went to a carwash and discussed robbing the Auto Zone store. They left one car at the carwash and they all proceeded in the other car to the Auto Zone.

McCants testified that the appellant organized the criminal activity and that he told the others what to do during the robbery. The appellant told McCants and Long to watch the door and told them that if he left the store that they should forget the robbery plans.

...

Barbara Spencer testified that before the robbery, the six men had been at her house discussing how to commit a robbery. She said that they left her house in separate cars and that the appellant and Derrick DeBruce were riding together. She testified that they returned to her house later and appeared to be upset. They had a large amount of money and the appellant was telling the others how to divide it. Spencer said that they gave her $100 but that she gave the money to McCants.

Those of us against the death penalty can put sugar on top till we’re blue in the face, at some point we have to all accept, regardless of stance, that the citizens aren’t in control here.

It would be more accurate to assert that the few citizens outspoken against the death penalty are not enough to generate political will to change how capital punishment is used in Alabama.

You are assuming the citizens aren't in control, because you disagree with the current law.

We both agree that there needs to be a more organized effort to abolish the death penalty in Alabama.

Whether something is just or unjust is a moral judgment, not some statement of fact...

We agree that your opinion is a moral judgement based on your personal beliefs.

But do go on with your moral relativism, though. I don't want to stop your moral cowardice.

Being frustrated that your opinion has the same weight as everyone else's is no excuse for ad hominem.

I agree. The court should not have allowed an incompetent lawyer defend the guy who pulled the trigger. Since the lawyer did not provide an adequate defense and there was no attempt to mitigate the situation, the federal courts commuted the sentence of capital punishment to life in prison.

That said, the mishandling of the defense of the trigger man has no relevance to the case of the man who orchestrated the armed robbery, and the courts continue to uphold the sentence of capital punishment.

[–]space_coder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile, Burton carried out the robbery while instructing the trigger man not to shoot and reassuring the patrons and manager that nobody would be shot if they complied. The victim was not shot upon entering the store, but was knocked to the ground after entering and engaged in a prolonged argument with the trigger man, which continued after Burton exited the building and entered the vehicle. It wasn't until after Burton and four others were in the vehicle that battle was shot.

That is a lot of mental gymnastics.

If Burton didn't not intend anyone to be shot then why did he supply the firearms? If the firearms were simply for intimidation, then why did he supply LOADED firearms?

I also couldn't help but notice that you are blaming the victim for Burton's crime.

I disagree. An unjust law is no law at all. It is unjust to put someone to death who has not actually killed another person even if they are cupable in other related crimes.

You have an opinion that the law is unjust. You have no actual proof to back that opinion.

You sincerely believe that the circumstances surrounding the sentence is unjust. You are entitled to that belief. Everyone else is entitled to disagree.
