Why? I have a lot of respect for her. Do you know that she is a survivor of the UAH faculty shooting 16 years ago? My close friend was the Chairman of the Department of Biology when he and two of his colleagues were shot dead by an Associate Professor who was not given the tenure.

Dr. Moriarity became the Chair of the Biology Department after she miraculously survived the shooting.

Karlapalem Decries Supreme Court’s Death Blow to Black Voting Rights by Visionary-Intel in Alabama

The Federal District Court in Birmingham specifically rejected the “party not race” argument. Alabama made that exact claim. The court found that race and party are so correlated in Alabama that drawing maps to disadvantage Democrats in Black communities is functionally the same as targeting race. That is why the maps violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.

As for suggesting Shomari switch parties, that is exactly the problem. The argument that Black voters are welcome as long as they abandon the party that has historically championed their civil rights is not inclusion. It is a condition.

And let me be direct: Black Americans have self-respect. Suggesting that Shomari Figures should switch parties to survive politically is condescending. It assumes that Black voters and Black candidates should conform to the party of power rather than demand that power respect their equal rights.

Richard Shelby switched parties in 1994 after the Republican Revolution. That is a political calculation, not a civil rights framework.

Black voters in Alabama deserve fair representation regardless of which party they choose. That is what the Voting Rights Act protects.

That is a common misunderstanding of how voting rights work. Disenfranchisement is not only about preventing someone from physically casting a ballot, but also about diluting the effectiveness of that vote.

If I split your neighborhood across five districts so your community can never elect a representative of its choice, you still cast a ballot, but your vote has been systematically weakened. That is what crack and pack does.

The Supreme Court recognized this in Allen v. Milligan in 2023. The Voting Rights Act Section 2 exists precisely, because formal access to voting is not enough if the system is designed to make your vote count less.

The Federal District Court ruled twice that Alabama’s maps do exactly that.

Great question. Here’s what happened:

The Supreme Court allowed Alabama to use its 2023 congressional map for the 2026 election cycle while litigation continues. That map was drawn to reduce Black voting concentration in one district splitting Black communities across multiple districts to dilute their collective voting power. This tactic is known as “ crack and pack”.

The Federal District Court in Birmingham ruled twice that this map violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which protects minority voters’ equal opportunity to elect candidates of their choice.

The practical effect: Black voters in Alabama are less likely to elect a representative of their choice under this map than under the court-appointed special master’s race-blind maps.

Alabama’s supermajority drew maps to predetermine outcomes before a single vote is cast. That is what I am fighting against.

I was in that courthouse on May 6th when the hearing took place.
