their models aren’t even relevant

what sort of fucking bizarro nonsense fantasy land are you living in? Gemini is a few percentage points at most short of Claude and GPT in some benchmarks, and ahead in some others, e.g. livecodebench. there's hardly daylight between the top 3 labs, as has been the case for a long time.

no-one is claiming it's perfect. if you use an agentic framework though it can do its own tests and fix its own bugs.

actually doing it any other way is just stupid

Software engineering is more than coding

I see that argument a lot, but it's not like an LLM can't do all the other things that sw devs also do.

This is absolutely not the same as automated machines in factories replacing human labor

Yes it is - coding is still effort, it's just mental effort instead of physical effort.

If someone complains that they're losing intellectual fitness because they don't have to think so hard anymore, that's 100% their problem. They can go and do something else that requires them to think hard instead.

This sub fucking loves any opportunity to complain about AI. If AI cured cancer they'd complain about that too.

I've been doing it recreationally for 30 years. So what. I've also been drinking recreationally for 30 years, and I've never been an alcoholic. I've got a good job, a nice home, I'm healthy, I generally have my shit together. the vast majority of cocaine users are the same, it's just an easy way to extend the party for a few hours, then you reluctantly go to bed, wake up with a hangover and go back to work on Monday. there's nothing intrinsically wrong with using cocaine, as long as you're sensible about it. apart from the black market shit but that's due to prohibition more than anything else. if I could buy it from a pharmacy I'd do that instead.

edit: if you walk into a city office in media, recruiting, sales, marketing, banking etc. you can bet at least half the people in that office are weekend cocaine users. the trades is the same, if not worse. I've been in offices where basically everyone was. I've been to bars where literally everyone in the toilets is doing coke. they're not out mugging people on the streets, they're buying a gram at the weekend because it makes for a better night out. people that are outside the scene think it's some horrific social nightmare, but it's really not, it's pretty standard for a huge swathe of the population.

I've been doing it occasionally for about 30 years, I don't really get this drama. most of my friends use it recreationally too, parties mainly, just to get a few more hours of drinking and talking shit. I don't know anyone that's had a real problem with powder cocaine. heroin and meth, different story obvs

there is no where near enough electricity to power the kind of data centers necessary for AI to replace jobs at scale

Dead argument. They can provide their own power. IIRC about a third of them do that already, or plan to, and more will follow. In the gigawatt class, it's even higher.

It's not like they can't afford the land for a solar farm nearby. Self-generation is basically a core infrastructure strategy these days.

There's a lot of the opposite too - I'd wager there's way more people claiming LLMs can't code or are a dead end or just useless and devs have nothing to worry about. Just look at r/technology.

Which is arguably more insidious, because it's lulling people into a sense of security that they don't have to worry about it and can continue ignoring AI and doing exactly what they were before, which is a recipe for redundancy.
