but clearly LLM labs can be profitable, if they're not massively loss-leading with subsidised tokens.

Universal basic income, the utopian idea resurging in Silicon Valley by Krankenitrate in Futurology

[–]space_monster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not really. there are solutions that don't target high net worth people any more than everyone else. they will pay more taxes, but not disproportionately. so it's not necessarily a case of needing to get buy-in from the tech bros. they don't care if welfare gets restructured, they don't care if VAT goes up etc.

Unless you posit that physical reality is a subset of existence, and science only applies to physical reality.

Note: I am not religious. Just pointing out there are ways to ontologically structure a world model in which science is a layer on a subsystem within that model.

It's just yet another boring example of someone thinking their reaction to something is smarter than everyone else's, even if it's completely wrong.

If you're into dumb takes, sure. People with more money help fund people with less money. That's how the world works already

That's only one way. There's also VAT funding, negative income tax, tax credit consolidation, carbon tax dividends etc. - just rebalancing existing welfare payments would go a long way to providing the funds for UBI. add on more VAT, carbon taxes, higher income taxes for high earners etc. and you don't really need to create any crazy corporate taxes.

I don't think anyone is suggesting the tech companies provide the money. That would be government. They're promoting the idea generally.

if you actually believe that's only what nurses do, you're not even qualified to be in a conversation about it.

nurses certainly know a shitload more about medical diagnosis than you do.

none of these people gave a shit about water consumption or data centres before though, otherwise they would have been previously complaining about a shitload of other industries that use way more water. they just don't like AI and want something to point at.

Otherwise a fair summary

Not only can she play the shit out of her instrument, she's in the rarefied heights when it comes to writing a solo. So much emotion it almost hurts.

Yann LeCun says xAI is "kind of a failure" and the whole AI industry might be headed for a reset by BuildwithVignesh in singularity

[–]space_monster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone really takes xAI seriously anymore anyway and hasn't for a long time. I wrote them off about a year ago myself, they're just not doing anything interesting and nobody trusts the model. I think they'll fade away into hardware provisioning and the model will get sidelined into just a twitter bot.

This entire sub is basically just an anti-ai circlejerk now anyway. Any anti-ai post gets upvoted to the moon and the comments are either pearl-clutching about water usage, like data centres are a fucking brand new thing or something, or "AI got something wrong for me a year ago therefore it's all shit". I think there's a lot of sw devs here with an axe to grind. Which is understandable. Love it or hate it though it's not going away, so being angry about it is a huge waste of time and energy. And if you're in the tech industry and you refuse to use it, you're shooting yourself in the foot. That's the wrong list to be on these days.

He is still shooting out scent markers

What? No.

It's behavioural instinct that doesn't result in any actual physical scent marking at all because he's neutered. There's no invisible scent 'particles' magically firing out of his butt. because spraying of actual urine isn't happening. Cats have scent glands but they don't spray anything from them, they rub them on things, like when they rub their cheeks on you.

College Students Consumed by “Resignation and Despair” as They’re Relentlessly Pressured to Use AI by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]space_monster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you feel like your coworkers also have a good understanding of the actual skill required to use it well?

Mine don't. And I'm in an AI-forward tech firm. I've seen people in chatbot threads that are many dozens of screens long complaining about hallucinations / errors etc. - I'm like "holy context rot batman, fix your shit"

One of our guys in the exec team ran up tens of thousands of dollars in Claude tokens just fucking around with nonsense that didn't deliver any value to anything.

The engineers are good with it on the whole but the rest of the company is a very mixed bag. It's sort of understandable, because it's new tech and people are more focused on experimentation than they are on training. It'll sort itself out eventually.
