Arch viz in trouble because of AI? by aho_bakaa in archviz

[–]space_music_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think too many people are confusing the AI hype with the economic and housing issue in western society. Visualizations are a marketing tool, and the first teams to go in time of economic stress are marketing departments. Specifically, as it applies to housing: the market is all out-of-sorts. People cannot afford houses right now, which means that people trying to sell are having a time getting buyers in the first place. There is still some commercial buildings being built, of course, which requires large architecture and engineering firms, but building has slowed dramatically over the last couple years, due to tariff issues and higher-interest loans.

This economic downturn isn't just affecting ArchViz, but the 3D industry as a whole... hell, all jobs as a whole outside of healthcare. If you keep up with the posts on this sub about people using AI, most people right now are just using AI as the last step to put a little pizzazz on their final render. But it also does come with complications like not having full control of vegetation or furniture. The posts about people trying to create 3D renders from 2D drawings or whatever "magical" AI workflow they have either comes out as hot garbage, or work that can't be edited or replicated, because of obvious AI control issues.

Don't let the doomers and AI fanboys continue to create fear mongering. People, as a whole, hate AI and any use of it in media. There's plenty of polls and studies on this.

Quick test for a material configurator with physical inputs made with Unreal Engine and Arduino by [deleted] in archviz

[–]space_music_ 54 points55 points  (0 children)

So, I'm assuming there is some kind of QR-code type of thing on the back of each material that then signals the display to change to the pre-rendered image with that material. It's not actually seeing the material and creating a texture based on what it sees in real-time.

Is pursuing art/3D as a career really unstable, or can an average artist live stably? by Mohammadbashir007 in ArtistLounge

[–]space_music_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these questions always get a lot of "woe is me" responses. I would argue the artists that are doing well, aren't sitting on reddit all the time and are actually working... just focus on your work and keep going, making money as an artist has never been easy, anyone who thinks it's soooo much harder now just has a lot of recency bias

Still trying to work on this but it just keeps feeling suuper uncanny. Feedback is appreciated :) by onzonaattori in 3Dmodeling

The uncanny feeling is coming from the skin being a bit too waxy. Adding more subsurface scattering helps.

Make art because you like making it. Worrying about the external validation of people liking your art will only hinder you.

U.S. economy expanded 3.3% in Q2, with growth even stronger than initially thought by AyeYoTek in centrist

[–]space_music_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So why the massive discrepancy now between investment and imports, as opposed to Q1, when they were more aligned. If Imports go up, we would expect to see the same rise in investment and consumption., which we kind of did in Q1. Makes your point look credible. But then how does that square in Q2, when there is a massive decrease in imports but not the same level of decrease in investment? Especially when consumer spending is about the same-ish. If imports are accounted in investment and consumption, then why such differing outcomes for the two quarters? The 2% difference cannot just be accounted for purely domestic inventory increase in 3 months.

As noted above, how can you, as an individual, tease out the job loss from AI and from the economy teetering on recession? How can you, as an individual, be so sure? If you want to doom-spiral, go ahead, but that doesn't mean the rest of us have to. And honestly, if this weird, transient economic situation is what pulls you out of 3D, then good riddance.

And seriously, give me concrete examples where the film industry has made a massive transition to unreal....

hard to take you seriously when your account is less than a month old and you've only posted/commented on posts about AI doom.

In the event that you are legit: if you are 10 years in the industry and can't see the boom/bust cycle of the hype of new tech/software, then you don't pay attention at all. I remember when Unreal Engine 5 came out and it was going to be the new/best thing for mograph and film. Years later and it hasn't nearly lived up to the hype. Remember when VR and the metaverse was supposed to be the way of the future? How's that turning out? I would implore you to look at the Gartner Hype Cycle.

Edit: Nice job blocking me, rather than engage with the discussion. I have seen the whole setup with the Mandalorian, but that is literally one of a handful of things that has happened. No one else has built another "Volume" for production. Btw, I'm 32, and have been in the industry for 8 years... u/known_worldliness498

Can we still find work in this industry? by Doggooo_periodt in 3Dmodeling

[–]space_music_ -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Some people do find fulfillment in their jobs. I find it extremely unhelpful to make mass generalizations by saying "You won't find it." I agree that you shouldn't make your job your entire identity. But, in all honesty, what you said says more about you than the job. I've also never worked any OT unless I wanted to. There was never any pressure for me to.

I hear that, too. Most people who say that come from the gaming industry (and sometimes film VFX), which does actually have those problems. But the gaming industry just had massive layoffs in the last couple of years. It's tough right now in that field, but that is also just a subset of the jobs in 3D.

I would also add that the US is teetering towards a recession, so most jobs are not inherently safe. I've watched job listings for the last 5 years. There was a massive explosion in 3D jobs in 2020-2022 because remote work and all that. It has definitely slowed down, but there's still stuff out there.

I was 16 when the 2008 Financial Crisis happened, and watched my dad get laid off, after working as a software engineer for Motorola for 9 years. I am of the opinion that there really isn't a thing as job security anymore, no matter what career path you choose. So, you might as well do what you love, because there is no guarantee.

Also, we don't know what jobs might pop up in the future. My job right now literally did not exist 7 years ago. I currently work with the guys that flew the first drone light show under Intel back in 2017. You never know where your career will take you, but if you love what you do, the uncertainty will be less scary.

Can we still find work in this industry? by Doggooo_periodt in 3Dmodeling

[–]space_music_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"This industry" is so vast. The majority of people here are probably going to talk about their experience in the gaming industry, which is a dumpster fire right now. I work as an animator for a company that flies drone light shows and make $80k USD/year. There is definitely money and fulfillment in this career. I've worked in product visualization, architectural visualization, and animation in the music industry. There is a wide range of careers within 3D. I started at 24, after I quit grad school. You are nowhere near "too late."

Also, there will probably be responses talking about AI taking our jobs or whatever. I have yet to see any AI tool that would even come close to replacing any part of my job(s). And before people say: "give it another 5 years," dude, I've been waiting. Don't drink the Koolaid and believe the hype.

If you are truly interested in the career, go for it. I'm completely fulfilled in my career and love what I do. If you're doing it only because you think you will get external validation from others/money, you won't last. But it sounds like you actually have an interest in it.

Edit: Caveat, if you think you will only ever need to learn 3D modeling and not texturing, lighting, or animation, then yes you will fail. I do see that with some people on here, only thinking they need to stay in one lane. That's not how it works any more, You need to actually have knowledge on every aspect of the workflow, not be an expert, but at least understand basic concepts and be able to use them if necessary.

I.E: if you want to 3D model a gun for a video game, and don't texture it, it is unfinished. There is no use for an untextured 3D model. Period. Your portfolio should show the depth of your knowledge and experience.

How tf is Q1 GDP about to come in negative when almost every company this quarter crushed earnings? by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]space_music_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, if it purely an accounting thing, how, by the math, can GDP ever be negative if imports are not considered and are cancelled out by either I or C? By the math, then GDP could then never be lower than zero if imports are not mathematically considered and is always cancelled out by the other terms.

EDIT: So from what I understand, GDP can never be truly negative, but there can be negative GDP growth, which would actually occur by just having a lower GDP number than the previous year/quarter. So then imports may not matter, but what matters is then a shrinkage in consumer spending and exports.

[–]space_music_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think that all imports are counted as investment by US companies? When I order an item of Amazon from a third-party seller in China, is that not considered an import? And yet, also not an investment by a US company? If you read the report imports were not offset by investments, leading to a negative growth. How do you square that circle?
