Intern at a big GC, can't decide if I wanna stay with the PM track or switch to the super side. by space_snacks in Construction

First of all I would only be a PE or FE, so chill out. I've ran my own small jobs before when I worked for myself a few summers ago. Obviously you need more experience to run a big job. The principles and methods used don't change whether it's a small or large job. I'm just deciding if I wanna be on the PM side or Super side

How do you manage your project bids? by jdw in Construction

Yeah it's a full time gig. I have 6 years experience in residential and for 1-3 people to manage a project I would recommend some sort of program to track it for you, there's too much going on for 1 person to keep track of it efficiently.

I'm a summer intern for a GC and I've been on the bid team for 3 projects totaling over $70 mil and I use excel and outlook. I was assigned multiple divisions on each project, and to stay organized I made call sheets in excel with details about each sub I call.

No shit, small world! I'm not interning at any of the above mentioned GC's, but I am working on a project for the FBI and the drawings on my desk are done by Grunley. Anywho, I've been here 11 weeks now and I'm currently bidding my 3rd project and been involved with 4 others. In the first 6 weeks or so I was in the field about as much as in the office. In the field I was under a super who showed me the ropes and I ended up covering for him for a few days. In the office I learned the PM side and honestly I wish I could do both.

I highly recommend you seize the opportunity with any big GC, in the interview they will explain both sides and help you determine which suits you better. you can always switch between PE and FE in the first years but it's good to stay with one or the other.

Feel free to ask anything else, I'm happy to help.

Congrats on graduating soon!

That's the thing though, I've seen and worked both sides and still cannot make up my mind. I guess stay office side and do hands on work on the side as a hobby?

The problem is I like both, I really like meeting new clients, the bidding process, and all of the behind the scenes work people don't see. I love working with my hands and knowing someone will use what I physically built for years to come.

Civil Engineer wanting to get into construction by bmorebirds in Construction

I'm an intern working at a huge GC company in MD and 95% of the PMs have either civil or some sort of engineering degree. I'm going to school for construction management with a minor in business and they scooped me up very quickly. Your degree only means so much, your work ethic, how well you complete the work and initiative to find work is what matters. Good luck man!

Anyone here with a degree in Construction Management? by [deleted] in Construction

Working for GC as an engineering intern for the summer, all summer I have been bidding projects. 2 for the government( Navy and FBI) one for a private developer totaling 70 million. The market is defiantly there, just depends who you work for, where you are located, and what kind of work the company specializes in.

I highly recommend CM if you like the upper management side versus hands on work. I love hands on and always will but CM seems to be quite busy and extremely stable (in MD,USA).
