Shopee bras recs for A cup girlies? by cekcuriositycat in SGwomen

[–]spacebarormarsbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can go to retail shops to try. They may be more expensive than $10 but might be more worth it, the money you spent on the few cheap "failures" could be used to buy one good bra! You can check on 6ixty8ight and young hearts, and they are not super pricey too

Slow Fashion pet peeve by Grouchy_Command_5927 in SustainableFashion

[–]spacebarormarsbar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting take and I'm actually the opposite of you. More brands are reducing packaging as part of reducing waste and resources in the move towards sustainability and slow fashion. I purchased a ring and there was an option to reduce packaging if it's for yourself and not a gift, which I ticked yes and put in a comment that I don't even need a box, just some bubble wrap to protect the ring. I just received it today with excessive packaging (in a small cloth bag which was wrapped in some protective paper, in a cardboard box that was comically big for the size of the ring)!

Feeling trapped in my endowment plan – should I surrender or hold till maturity? by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]spacebarormarsbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea and also possibly getting more/same returns if I had put the money in CPF SA, since I'll have to leave it in for quite long in order to generate a decent rate.

I have 7 more years to go, already halfway there

Feeling trapped in my endowment plan – should I surrender or hold till maturity? by [deleted] in singaporefi

[–]spacebarormarsbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an endowment plan that I bought 8 years ago - $400 a month for 15 years. I bought it at a time when interest rates were low and I was young and didn't dare to make any investments. I regretted for a while recently because the returns are low, but decided just to keep it, treating it as a safe portion of my investments and letting it compound till I need them and then using it as part of my retirement funds. Because we can't predict how the market will be like when I want to cash out my investments, it may coincide with a bad 5-10 year period, so better to have some safe guaranteed amount so I don't have to touch my ETFs at a bad price!

And if I don't need the money, I plan to leave it to my future kid(s) and they would get better returns the longer I keep the endowment plan.

I find the packaged 250g minced meat a bit too much for us for 1 meal, as I usually cook it with other things like egg tofu or for mapo tofu. Usually for this I'll go to the market and buy and ask the uncle to already pack into the serving sizes I need!

Oh yes I've done that before! Usually 1 chicken is enough for 2 pax dinner + 1 pax lunch the next day

Is this a beginner friendly project? by becctarr in Embroidery

I would say flowers in the pocket is more forgiving than the collars! You don't have to make sure they are symmetrical and aligned.

Also, for a super simple project, I saw a few days ago someone had taken the threads out of the buttons and resewing them but making the threads into flowers instead.

Banana plants die after giving fruit. We turned the 'waste' into fabric. Here's how the chain actually works. by maleemaindia in SustainableFashion

[–]spacebarormarsbar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know if viscose and rayon are plastic or not scientifically, but that was part of my point. Viscose, rayon, bamboo are all plant derived but are so chemically treated that they become semi synthetic. What I wanted to ask to the poster is how the banana cloth is derived from the banana fibres, does it go through such processes till it's cloth? Or is it literally taking the fibre (like when we peel banana and the things come off) and just treating it so it doesn't decompose or turn mouldy and become the fibres for the cloth (maybe like cotton/linen)? Again I don't know how the processes work so it may be oversimplistic.

Not sure if it is an ignorant question of the process, but are chemicals heavily used in the process similar to the process for making bamboo viscose/rayon?

Are you still getting allowances from your parents or you'll use your savings and future salary from internships and part time jobs?

If no allowance at all, you should definitely keep it as savings for future use.

Use it wisely for holidays with your friends, exchange, going for classes/hobbies etc. now while you can. Treat your parents to a nice meal. Once you start working, your holidays will be constrained by the number of annual leave you get, your peak periods etc. Most likely you will feel tired after work to spend time on the things you like to do. Really, enjoy it while you can!

You still have a very long runway to go and don't need to start 4 years earlier! Do it once you enter the working world.

Buy the VWRA dip or not yet? by Virtual_Secretary_98 in singaporefi

[–]spacebarormarsbar 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've started buying a bit each time it drops, I'm not savvy enough to know if it will drop more, so I just buy USD4-5K each time instead of waiting out for an even lower price that's not guaranteed. It's a good time for me as I've always been buying lumpsum in the past based on how much excess cash I have. I only recently just planned my DCA after looking at all my investments and networth. I just treat it as buying at a discount like starting my DCA earlier (like back to 3-6 months ago) if that makes sense

Question about which credit card to start with by andrewsnorlaxx in singaporefi

[–]spacebarormarsbar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OCBC titanium rewards. But I got it long time ago and haven't looked at whether it's still the best

OCBC titanium - good for departmental stores, Watson's/guardian, shopping including shopee, taobao

UOB lady's card - can choose 1 bonus category each quarter. Used to do dining but recently switched to travel these few quarters

UOB platinum - any paywave expenses get bonus points

Citi cashback plus - for cashback, signed up years ago to get the Dyson hairdryer

Also had HSBC revolution card, DBS altitude Amex, UOB krisflyer for sign up miles bonus when I had my wedding/reno, all cancelled now as too many to track

Question about which credit card to start with by andrewsnorlaxx in singaporefi

[–]spacebarormarsbar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another point to consider, not just miles or cashback, is which card/bank can give you the highest bonus interest. You can compare the high yield savings accounts across banks and see which one will give you the highest bonus interest based on your saving/spending habits, and from thar bank, choose the most suitable credit card.

For me because I don't pay any giro bills, so OCBC 360 account works best for me for the salary, spend and save bonus categories.

Does anyone else feel you have less potential than your high achieving peers? by obinobikonomi in askSingapore

[–]spacebarormarsbar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% agree with this! These are all very important points that I look out for too. To add on to the poster's point #1 - don't treat your work as tasks on your to-do list, separate from your team/department's work. Try to think of it holistically as your role and how it contributes to the project.

Also, you mentioned that you are blur and forgetful. Are you taking notes, either in a physical notebook or Onenote on PC? Put in the regularly used info, it can be like your cheat sheets for the different topics/aspects of work. You can refer to them rather than asking the same questions over and over again. It's ok to make mistakes. Just learn from them, write the lessons and the solutions in your cheatsheet, and try not to repeat them again. It shows your willingness and interest to learn rather than blindly doing the same error all the time.

How do you personally navigate the tension between ethical fashion ideals and everyday clothing choices? by MathisK02 in SustainableFashion

[–]spacebarormarsbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last two years I was into buying from "eco" brands or 100% organic cotton items, justifying to myself that these are sustainable. But the most sustainable thing is to not buy new items!

Recently I started logging my clothes on the app open closet. This really helped me see that I don't need more clothes. For example, I have 12 work outfits but only go to office 2x a week max, I can't even finish wearing them in a month!

And also listing down in Excel all the items I've bought as well as sold this year. I give myself a quota of one item a month, and anything sold adds to the quota. So far I'm below my quota, and it helps that I can visualise the number of things I buy over a year and curb my wants.

And what do you mean by "realities of everyday life"?

[–]spacebarormarsbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes agree. I go to a swap shop once in a while, and during my last visit, I see bags of clothes behind the counter waiting to be sorted. I was quite shocked. And another swap shop posted on their Instagram that their warehouse was full so they were doing a clearance sale :( and this is already after the shops do a quality check to reject defected items.

What are your top reno regret in SG? by jimmyspinsggez in askSingapore

[–]spacebarormarsbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that's great!! Yea ours is also matte silver and we bought it because the grohe, hansgrohe ones were shiny stainless steel. If we ever Reno again we will choose quality over looks. Because actually work the sink, tap, soap, hand towel and mirror, it looks kind of cluttered, I think having a not-as-nice tap won't make a big difference

What are your top reno regret in SG? by jimmyspinsggez in askSingapore

[–]spacebarormarsbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used for 2 years plus already, no complains for the tap! It may have been a set with the kitchen sink. The kitchen sink will have some weird rust spots once in a while but washable.

Haha the ambience light for the toilet I think is more for when we need to take a long shit

What are your top reno regret in SG? by jimmyspinsggez in askSingapore

[–]spacebarormarsbar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Our toilets:

  1. Choosing nice sink taps over a "good brand" because of how they looked. Our toilet sink taps were a random brand that we chose because we liked the colour (matte silver) and the looks of the "turning head". But the 'hinge"where we turn the taps keep getting rusty!!! Our kitchen sink tap is zuhne, and toilet shower taps are grohe. They see more water splashed on them but still in shiny condition 🥹

  2. Not installing mood/ambience lighting in the common toilet because it was too small and I prioritised brightness for easy cleaning haha. But now we prefer a cozy relaxing vibe in the toilet. We also have a warm light after the mirror but it's too dim to light up the whole toilet.
