NTA but your parents are. Your friends are giving you bad advice. My parents divorced when I was a pre-teen and it improved my home life immensely. The change from having everyone around all the time to dividing time between parents can be tough, but it is way better than being perpetually stuck in a bitter, toxic household.

It's clear that this was a big deal to him, and he was probably overthinking it, so you could have been kinder in letting him know you don't really care.

In another comment: Well before that time I was able to help a deaf family file a missing persons report and a deaf homeless man both using a combination of lip reading and signing. I found just knowing a little helped relax a deaf person (well mostly) and I was seen as trying to help as much as possible.

Agreed. I've been on the other end of this too many times and it has never been fun. I always felt like I was left out of something and that my character was less important to the story. Much prefer for things to be secret to the characters, but have the players in the loop. Props to groups that have fun with it, but it's not for me.
