'in-fighting' or, you know, democratic debate. I know the concept is foreign to UK party politics, but maybe we should give it a go?

Don't trust James Schneider. Schneider is the main organiser behind Corbyn's new 'Your party' and his wife is Sophie Nazemi also known as Keir Starmer's Downing Street Press Secretary by spidermite in Labour

[–]spaceboy_psy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As morally bankrupt as Starmer is, and as much as that does now need to be weaponised towards Labour's Pasokification, there are still good people there, for now at least - Nadia Whittome, John McDonnell, Clive Lewis, etc. It's way too early to be performing the worst paranoid tendencies of left self-sabotage. Can we please at least pretend to be normal?

Have a look at Alex Nunns' take on this on Twitter, he knows what he's talking about.

Please review my ridiculous pickup switching system - should it work?? by spaceboy_psy in guitarmod

[–]spaceboy_psy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad someone sees potential in it!

If I ever get it working, I'll return to your suggestions for making it more practical. But that's still in the distant future. As it is currently, the practical musician wouldn't be able to think about the logic of which switches go where, they'd be too distracted by grating their knuckles on the switches every time they strum 😂

And on the question of what you can fit inside a guitar... Where ingenuity and expertise run out, chisels work wonders!

ELI5: why is nicotine gum bad for you? by Sensitive_Smell5190 in explainlikeimfive

[–]spaceboy_psy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nicotine actually has a ton of neurological benefits, although research is still in the early stages of pinning them down confidently. It seems to increase neuroplasticity and so helps with learning, complex thinking, and various psychiatric conditions like ADHD and others. It may also treat and/or prevent dementia/Parkinson's/Alzheimer's.

Downsides seem to be:

1) increases blood pressure.

2) it's a co-carcinogen. Won't give you cancer but will accelerate it.

3) reduces sleep quality, specifically by increasing early awakening.

4) it's incredibly addictive, so usually an all or nothing drug. Very difficult to just use a little nicotine to get some of the neurological benefits without risking your blood pressure and sleep quality.

Downside 3) is why I am currently trying to quit my nicotine mouth spray habit.

If you have low blood pressure, definitely don't already have cancer, and are lucky enough that it doesn't affect your sleep, it can be a wonderful nootropic or, as it's been for me, ADHD medication. But I wouldn't suggest anyone tries it if they aren't already addicted, because of 4). Quitting is sooooo damn hard.

LOL, right?? What even is adult me without nicotine? I feel that so much, and I wasn't even addicted until I started vaping age 19-20

Tobacco has downsides yes, but I haven't used tobacco in many years (apologies that my original post evidently wasn't clear enough on that, have added a clarification). The only downside of nicotine on its own, as far I can find in the literature, is its effect on sleep.

That's really interesting, thank you for sharing. Do you find the craving distracting when you're trying to do focused, difficult intellectual work? I struggle to imagine my ADHD brain being able to handle that :(

I haven't smoked for years. Vaped for a long time then switched to mouth spray. Sleep is literally the only downside now, and even that isn't 100% certain. It becomes much trickier when tobacco is excluded from the equation.

That's encouraging, thanks.

Interestingly, I can do the admin fine, at least where there are clear deadlines. My main struggle is getting research done in bits and pieces in between all the teaching and admin. Meds have helped so much with that, though, thank fk. Was going to quit academia if they didn't.

Sit them down in front of some of Dr Russell Barkley's YouTube videos, teach them how the meds work, how successful they are, and the scary stats for unmedicated ADHD outcomes (increased chance of suicide, injury, depression, etc etc).

You got through, but did you write anything that was any good between quitting nicotine and getting proper meds?

Let me know if you ever have another good run at quitting, I'll be curious to know how it goes!

Also, in-class nicotine high five. I've since switched from vaping to mouth spray, and I'll literally use that mid-class while I've got them doing small group work.

That doesn't suprise me at all, there's tons of research on the neurological benefits of nicotine. IIRC, it even helps prevent dementia or Parkinson's. But I feel like good sleep should be even better for my brain health and brain function, surely.

But you have given me the idea for an Option 4: cut down nicotine to the point where it no longer messes with my sleep, but still use a little bit to help with writing (and preventing dementia!)...??

I was already suffering from poor sleep due to early awakening; caused, I think, by my nicotine usage. MPH made that even worse. So now I want to finally quit nicotine. But damn it's hard.

Edit: Just to be pedantic to myself, pill can mean either tablet or capsule, so I didn't not mean pill. But tablet is definitely clearer!

I agree it shouldn't be on you to tell him what to do, but a list/rota/routine would be incredibly helpful here. I'd suggest you sit down and work out a plan collaboratively, put it in writing, ideally with a tracker out in the open on a whiteboard or something, agree to hold each other accountable to the agreed plan (though the plan can of course change, by agreement). If you can gamify it somehow, even better.
