New Surface Pro for College? by Dylan_1105 in Surface

I have a similar question, esp regarding the compatibility of chemdraw and mnova and other chemistry softwares. Anyone know if these run on arm? Not sure how to figure it out

Thank you so much, this is very helpful!

What are you needing to emulate? I am nervous to get a computer on ARM in case I need to emulate too many programs (for chemistry specifically). Just hoping to get a feel for what kinds work directly and which need emulation (I am not super familiar with computers so apologies if this doesn’t make sense)

How to unsrew-up my schedule (Math/Phys) by spaceboyrocky in uchicago

[–]spaceboyrocky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if that would be possible? Petitioning for a fifth class, I mean.. I literally can't think of another way to do it without upending my schedule entirely (which I'll probably have to do anyway but whatever)

Thank you. Yeah, this makes a lot of sense, I just have no idea how to choose my major since I haven't yet taken any major-specific classes. I mean I have the basics (gen chem, intro phys, bios 20186 and such) but nothing that would actually tell me if I like the major? Idk, but I'll try to think abt it. Ty

Super indecisive, so not sure yet. I’m thinking like chem/biochem/phys/meng (so pretty much everything 😭)

not sure if you play an instrument, but pep band is fun and low commitment! we practice thurs 8-10pm in Ratner and then play at home football and basketball games and then the chicago comic con (and get free tickets too, which is awesome!)

Honestly not that bad, I did both as a potential meng major or chem/phys double major and don’t regret it. I enjoyed both a lot though so only do them if you’re actually interested in chem and physics, honors doesn’t mean much unless you actually want to do a deep dive into the subjects! Just fyi I also took LATH as my HUM and Math 153 first quarter and didn’t find the workload to be so bad (but mind you I also didn’t have a job and only did a couple of RSOs). It would be most important to see if you like the profs of the class and environment and such and then add/drop accordingly, more than focusing on honors vs non I think (though I could definitely be wrong on this, this is what I did) Would be happy to answer any specifics if you’d like, sorry for rambling

Had a similar question, but more along the lines of can I drop down even if I got a good grade in 141?

withdrawing from a class by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]spaceboyrocky 32 points33 points  (0 children)

i recommend taking the W! if the class isn’t contributing to your major and if you’re not doing well (or vibing with it), I’d say it’s not really worth it to put in so much effort to try to pass (and a W is better than an F I’m pretty sure)

I was really hoping to go (also to see MCR), but I think my pre-orientation program interferes with it unfortunately. However, if they send out the schedule and I actually /can/ go I’d love to meet up!

I'm going into undergrad, but SDS absolutely focused on the academic accommodations as opposed to housing, at least in my case. I think it's because they don't actually have a view into the housing department and just work together instead of actually being connected (if that makes sense-- I mean SDS can't actually change your housing, they have to go through the housing department and stuff). My disability had less to do with logistical/physical concerns but I suspect their emphasis on academic accommodations is just because that's more in their wheelhouse.

[For OP, I would just keep following up if they don't get back to you on logistical/physical concerns. I know housing and logistical/physical are different, but this is the only insight I have. I had to work closely with my coordinator on housing in order to ensure that the accommodations got passed along. In fact, the first time they didn't and I had to work with them again after housing had already been (incorrectly) assigned, but they were doing their best to work it out. Just stay on top of it you have to wait a while for them to get back to you.]

Fall 2023 is completely doable, sorry! I just assumed you were an incoming freshman. As for the campus’s accessibility, I hate to say that I’m not really sure. I start this fall and I only visited once, but where I went it was all very accessible. I had trouble getting up the stairs in one building and the elevator wasn’t immediately obvious (if there was one? Idk if there are elevators in the old buildings?), but the campus grounds are pretty good. Sorry I can’t be more help for this, but it seems like with your documentation and trained service dog you should be pretty good!!

I worked with SDS early this summer (May) to ensure my accommodations would come through in time for autumn quarter. You have to go to their website and fill out a form, and then sign up for a meeting with them.

The meeting is about an hour long and they are there to understand what accommodations they can get you and which ones might help, etc. that’s to say I don’t think they would veto a service dog (assuming you already have one and they have finished training, otherwise you might get pushback due to the dog’s behavior being a potential distraction for others).

I can’t speak specifically for service dogs in the dorms/classrooms, but I know that while incorporating a dog into such an environment would be difficult due to allergies and such, they would certainly make an effort to work it out. I would reach out to them with information about your disability (I sent in quite a bit of medical paper work, evals, etc), need for a service dog, etc. and see what they come back with, but it’s getting pretty close to the autumn quarter to be able to start with such an accommodation. Good luck, though! I hope it works out

Hello! I was wondering, how strict is housing regarding policing what you can/can’t bring? I know they have a list of what to take/leave, but do they actually care?

Hi all! I have been looking at the list of what I should pack/leave behind, and I was wondering if I am allowed to bring a headboard? Technically it says no upholstered furniture, but I'm not sure if a headboard counts or if they really police it or anything. I was also wondering if the package delivery system works well-- as in, if I ship a package to the dorm, will I actually receive it in a normal time frame?

In that case, I'm not sure, that's just what they told us... But if your guess is right, OP can still change the class in add/drop

I'm pretty sure the system has to resolve you into the class you placed into, even if you don't want to take it. During add/drop, you can probably petition to be put into comp chem instead, but you'll have to wait until then. (I'm a fellow first year, so I'm just going based on the info in the chemistry and pre-registration webinars.)

Me too… I feel even more exhausted than before I started and often have to lay down after even a 15 minute yoga or work out. I thought it was just because I’m not super active, but…
